Luciobarbus comizo, the Iberian barbel or comizo barbel, is the largest barb native to the Iberian Peninsula — a powerful, elongated cyprinid capable of exceeding one metre in total length that inhabits the slow, deep middle and lower reaches of the Tagus and Guadiana river systems in Spain and Portugal. Long known under the combination Barbus comizo, it was formally placed in Luciobarbus with its western Palearctic relatives as the old genus Barbus was progressively divided. Its size and restricted range make it ecologically significant in Iberian rivers, yet its numbers have declined markedly since the 1990s under pressure from agricultural water extraction, pollution, and competition from introduced species — a trajectory that earned it a global Vulnerable listing on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Luciobarbus comizo was described by Franz Steindachner in 1864, originally in the genus Barbus, giving the combination Barbus comizo Steindachner, 1864. The parenthetical form of the authority in the current combination records that transfer. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name, which is now placed in Luciobarbus — the genus erected to receive the large-bodied western Palearctic barbels of Europe and the western Mediterranean basin after the old paraphyletic Barbus was split.

Within Luciobarbus, comizo belongs to the Iberian endemic group alongside other large river barbels such as L. bocagei and L. steindachneri. Its specific epithet is drawn from regional vernacular usage. The species has been documented in the literature and in conservation assessments under the synonymous Barbus comizo, and both names appear in older fish atlases and scientific papers covering Iberian freshwater biodiversity.

Morphology

The comizo barbel is the largest barb in Europe and among the largest in the western Palearctic. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 31.5 in, while GBIF-aggregated occurrence literature notes fish exceeding 39.5 in total length, making it a genuinely large freshwater fish. Its body is elongated and fusiform — more cylindrical and less deep-bodied than the smaller European barbels — with a subterminal mouth equipped with two pairs of barbels suited for probing the substrate.

Coloration is typical of a large riverine barbel: olive to brownish-grey on the dorsal surface grading to pale or whitish on the belly, without strong patterning. Fins are moderately sized and set well back along the body. Females grow larger than males, as is common in large barbs, and ripe females become noticeably deep-bodied when carrying eggs. There is no strong sexual dichromatism in this species.

Habitat

Luciobarbus comizo is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, confined to the Tagus (Tajo) and Guadiana drainage systems shared between Spain and Portugal. It is a species of the slow-moving middle and lower river reaches, favouring deep, almost stagnant stretches with abundant submerged and emergent vegetation rather than the fast, stony riffles preferred by smaller barbel relatives. It also colonises reservoirs behind large dams, an adaptability that has helped buffer local extinctions but which changes the ecological context in which the species lives.

The Tagus and Guadiana rivers occupy a temperate to warm Mediterranean climate zone, with water temperatures ranging across the seasons from cool winter conditions to warm summers. Water chemistry in these systems is broadly neutral to slightly alkaline. The species is benthopelagic, spending much of its time near the bottom or in the water column of deeper pools, and is sensitive to drastic water-level fluctuations driven by irrigation abstraction.

Feeding

Luciobarbus comizo is broadly omnivorous, with a diet weighted toward aquatic invertebrates and planktonic organisms. Sources note a diet that includes insects and, at larger sizes, occasionally fish — consistent with the opportunistic foraging common in large riverine barbels whose size allows them to take a wider range of prey than juveniles or smaller species.

In the deep, slower reaches it inhabits, the species likely forages along the bottom for benthic invertebrates and also exploits the open water column for planktonic food items. Its elongated body and subterminal, barbelled mouth are adaptations for substrate-rooting rather than pursuit predation, though large adults are capable of taking small fish when the opportunity arises.

Mating

Like all barbs, Luciobarbus comizo is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and no parental care of eggs or larvae. During the breeding season, males pursue gravid females through vegetation or over suitable substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief spawning rushes.

In large river barbs, spawning is strongly seasonal and often tied to spring river conditions — rising water temperatures, increased flow, and availability of shallow vegetated margins. Multiple males may court a single female. Adults give no protection to the scattered eggs and will consume them if they encounter them.

Breeding

Spawning in Luciobarbus comizo occurs in spring and early summer, triggered by warming water and seasonal river dynamics in the Tagus and Guadiana systems. Eggs are scattered adhesively over submerged plants, roots, or gravel in shallower reaches and margins. The species is not known to undertake long migrations to spawning grounds in the manner of anadromous fish, but seasonal movement within river systems to find suitable shallow spawning habitat is typical for large Iberian barbels.

The species is not bred in aquaria under normal hobby conditions owing to its size — adults routinely exceed 19.5–31.5 in and require very large volumes of water. In rivers and reservoirs, recruitment is tied to spring flood pulses, and the engineering of Iberian rivers with dams and weirs has altered the seasonal cues and physical access to spawning habitat that juveniles historically depended upon.

In the aquarium

Luciobarbus comizo is not a practical aquarium fish. Adults routinely grow to 31.5 in or more — dimensions that preclude anything short of a very large public aquarium tank — and the species requires cool, well-oxygenated, temperate water reflecting its Iberian river habitat. It has no established role in the ornamental trade, and its conservation status as a Vulnerable species argues against any collection for aquaria.

For aquarists with an interest in large European barbels, the species is best appreciated in its native rivers or in public exhibits. Its biology and ecological significance in Iberian freshwater systems make it a subject of scientific and conservation interest rather than a hobbyist fish.

Conservation

Luciobarbus comizo is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the global IUCN Red List, assessed in 2006 (taxon ID 2575/9457226). The GBIF-aggregated literature records a decline of approximately 33% in population size since the 1990s, driven by a combination of threats specific to Iberian rivers: intensive agricultural water extraction that reduces and concentrates flows, pollution from agricultural and urban sources, and competition and predation pressure from introduced species — particularly non-native centrarchids and asp — which have profoundly altered the fish communities of the Tagus and Guadiana.

Dams and river regulation have fragmented habitat, altered the seasonal hydrograph that triggers spawning, and inundated historic free-flowing reaches behind reservoirs. Portugal historically assessed the species as Endangered (2006) and Spain as Vulnerable (2002); a more recent regional assessment (2024, Spain/Portugal) returned Near Threatened, but the global listing remains Vulnerable. No commercial harvest for food or the aquarium trade is significant, so recovery prospects depend primarily on water management reform and control of invasive species in Iberian river systems.
