Luciobarbus yahyaouii is a medium-sized freshwater barbel endemic to the Moulouya River basin of northeastern Morocco — one of North Africa's most ecologically distinct river systems. Described in 2016 by Doadrio, Casal-Lopez and Perea and named in honour of the Moroccan marine ecologist Dr. Ahmed Yahyaoui, it is a benthopelagic cyprinid of the riffle-to-pool transition zones, found over sandy and gravelly substrates from the cooler headwaters down through the middle and lower river reaches and its associated reservoirs. Like most North African Luciobarbus, it is little kept in the aquarium and known primarily through systematic ichthyology; its conservation status is Least Concern, though the Moulouya's water quality deteriorates significantly in its middle and lower stretches, and future extraction and pollution pressures in this Mediterranean-climate basin remain a concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Luciobarbus yahyaouii was described in 2016 by Ignacio Doadrio, Manuel Casal-Lopez and Silvia Perea as a new species from the Moulouya River, Morocco. The species is placed in the genus Luciobarbus, a clade of large-bodied barbels distributed across North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, the Middle East and western and central Asia, distinct from the small European riverine barbs of Barbus sensu stricto and from the tropical African Enteromius. The genus has undergone considerable systematic revision over the past two decades as molecular phylogenetics clarified the paraphyly of the old broad Barbus; Luciobarbus is now supported as a natural grouping encompassing these larger, typically lowland-to-montane Mediterranean-rim and Palearctic barbels.

The Moulouya is one of Morocco's longest rivers, draining eastward through the High Atlas and the Oriental region before entering the Mediterranean near Saidia, and its ichthyofauna includes several Luciobarbus species distributed across different reaches and tributaries. The 2016 description adds L. yahyaouii to a growing inventory of endemic barbels from this region, several of which have restricted ranges tied to single river systems.

Morphology

Luciobarbus yahyaouii is a moderately large barbel reaching a maximum standard length of 7 in, placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. Like other Luciobarbus it is fusiform and laterally compressed, with the paired rostral and postrostral barbels typical of barbine cyprinids, a subterminal mouth suited to benthic feeding, and a moderately large eye. The dorsal fin is set at mid-body, the last simple ray ossified as is typical for the genus.

Detailed external morphology, meristic counts and osteological characters distinguishing it from the other Moroccan Luciobarbus are documented in the original 2016 description by Doadrio and colleagues. In life the species is presumed to show the olive-to-bronze dorsal ground colour common in North African barbels, paling ventrally, though specific colouration in fresh specimens is not widely documented in the accessible secondary literature.

Habitat

The species is confined to the Moulouya River basin, Morocco's principal northeastern river, which flows roughly 373 mi from the High Atlas and Middle Atlas to the Mediterranean. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, consistent with the barbel life style of moving between mid-water and the bottom depending on activity. It is reported from sandy and gravelly substrates in flowing sections of the main river and has been recorded in the downstream muddy reaches and in reservoirs impounded along the course.

The Moulouya is a Mediterranean-climate river with pronounced seasonal flow variation — high and turbid in winter and spring, low and often warm in summer. Published water-quality work on the basin shows the upper sections retaining good quality, while the middle and lower reaches suffer from agricultural run-off and urban effluents. For a fish that occupies multiple reach types, conditions it encounters will vary substantially between seasons and locations. The thermal springs present in parts of the Moulouya catchment (pH 5.46–7.50; temperatures reaching 82–131 °F in the spring sources themselves) represent geothermal outliers, not typical river-channel conditions experienced by the fish.

Feeding

Detailed dietary data for L. yahyaouii are not available in the secondary literature examined. By analogy with other medium-sized Luciobarbus of North African and Iberian rivers, the species is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore and benthic forager, taking a mix of invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — along with algae, fine plant material and organic detritus picked from sandy and gravel substrates in the water column and at the bottom.

FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic, consistent with this foraging mode. Seasonal shifts in diet linked to invertebrate emergence and river hydrology are likely, as is common in large Mediterranean-type rivers where flood pulses reset benthic invertebrate communities each year.

Mating

Luciobarbus yahyaouii is a seasonal migratory spawner, with spawning reported for April to May based on FishBase data — the spring period that follows the winter-to-spring flood pulse in Mediterranean-type rivers, when temperatures are rising and flows begin to recede. Like all barbs, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner: males pursue gravid females in open water or over gravel substrates, and eggs and milt are released together with no pair bond formed and no territory held.

Migration upstream to spawning grounds over gravel is consistent with the behaviour of other large Luciobarbus. No parental investment occurs after spawning; the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle into gravel interstices or onto the substrate, where their fate depends entirely on hydrological conditions and predation.

Breeding

As an egg-scatterer with no parental care, L. yahyaouii deposits its eggs over gravel or sandy substrates during the April–May spawning season and provides no subsequent care. Fecundity data specific to this species are not documented in available sources; medium-sized Luciobarbus generally produce moderate to large clutches scaled to body size, with eggs hatching within a few days at spring temperatures.

FishBase notes a high population resilience, with a population doubling time of less than 15 months, suggesting robust natural recruitment when habitat conditions permit. The species is not maintained in captivity and has not been bred in aquaria; all reproductive information therefore derives from field observations and inferences from related taxa.

In the aquarium

Luciobarbus yahyaouii is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. No established captive population exists, it is not commercially available in the hobby, and it is protected under Moroccan wildlife regulations as a native endemic species. Its eventual adult size of 18+ cm SL would in any case require large, well-oxygenated aquaria that replicate the cool-to-warm, neutral-to-mildly alkaline Mediterranean river environment — conditions that demand significant filtration and space.

For hobbyists interested in North African or Mediterranean barbels, related Luciobarbus from Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula occasionally appear in specialist collections, but as a rule this genus is kept and studied by researchers rather than hobbyists. The species is best appreciated as a field study subject in its native Moulouya basin.

Conservation

Luciobarbus yahyaouii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 2021 per FishBase records. The LC status reflects a population with adequate current size and no evidence of severe range-wide decline, supported by the species' relatively high population resilience (doubling time under 15 months).

Nonetheless, as a Moulouya basin endemic it faces the pressures common to all single-river North African endemics: degraded water quality in the middle and lower river from agricultural run-off and urban waste, reservoir impoundments that alter the hydrology and fragment migratory routes, water extraction for irrigation in an increasingly arid climate zone, and the general trajectory of reduced summer flows under regional warming. A species confined to a single river system has limited natural refugia should conditions in that system deteriorate substantially, and continued monitoring of the Moulouya ichthyofauna is warranted.
