Pseudobarbus tenuis was described by K.H. Barnard in 1938 under the name Barbus tenuis, the epithet referring to the slender, elongated body form. The species was subsequently moved to Pseudobarbus, a genus of small redfin barbs restricted to southern Africa that was separated from the broad old aggregate Barbus as molecular and morphological studies clarified the deep polyphyly of that genus across Africa and Eurasia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Pseudobarbus tenuis (Barnard, 1938), with the parenthetical authority marking the change of genus from Barnard's original placement.
Pseudobarbus is part of the southern African freshwater cyprinid radiation that includes the redfins, fiery redfins, and related forms largely confined to the Cape region and adjacent drainages. Several species in the genus are known from single rivers or small river systems, making them among the most geographically restricted freshwater fishes in Africa.
Morphology
True to its name, Pseudobarbus tenuis is a notably slender barb relative to its congeners, with an elongated, laterally somewhat compressed body. The genus is characterised by small to moderate size, a relatively small head, and the reddish pigmentation on the fins that gives the redfins their common name — typically most vivid in breeding males. Scales are moderately large for a small barb.
Detailed morphometric data for this species are sparse in the open literature. Based on the genus and the original description, maximum length is estimated in the range of a few centimetres standard length, consistent with other small Pseudobarbus. Exact lateral line scale counts and meristic data require reference to the original description by Barnard (1938).
Habitat
Pseudobarbus tenuis is a South African endemic associated with the clear, often cool rivers and streams of its native drainage. The redfin barbs of Pseudobarbus are characteristic of the southwestern and southern Cape region — mountain streams, foothill rivers and their headwaters — where water is typically clean, well-oxygenated, and flows over rocky or sandy substrates with sparse to moderate aquatic vegetation.
Water chemistry in such habitats is generally soft to moderately hard with a near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, reflecting the granitic and sandstone geology of much of the Cape Fold Belt. Exact temperature and chemistry records for this species are not available in the accessible literature, and conditions likely track those of other Cape redfins occupying comparable stream habitats.
Feeding
Like other small cyprinids of similar build, Pseudobarbus tenuis is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore taking small invertebrates, diatoms, algae, and organic detritus in the water column and from the substrate. The redfin barbs of the Cape region are generally regarded as feeding on benthic invertebrates, fine algal films, and whatever small prey items the current delivers.

Mating
Pseudobarbus tenuis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner, consistent with the reproductive strategy universal among Pseudobarbus and the broader family Cyprinidae. There is no pair bond, no nest, and no parental care at any stage. Courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female, the pair releasing eggs and milt simultaneously over suitable substrate — gravel, coarse sand, or among plant roots in the stream bed.
Spawning in Cape redfin barbs is understood to be tied to seasonal cues — rainfall, temperature shifts, and rising water levels associated with the wet season in the Cape region. Males typically display intensified reddish fin colouration during the breeding season.
Breeding
As an egg-scatterer with no parental care, Pseudobarbus tenuis deposits adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among gravel and substrate in flowing water, after which adults take no further interest in the spawn. Eggs are subject to predation by other stream fishes, including by the spawning adults themselves. Larval development follows the typical cyprinid pattern — yolk-sac absorption, free-swimming larvae, gradual transition to exogenous feeding on fine zooplankton and organic particles.
This species does not appear to have been documented in captive breeding. General principles for breeding small Cape redfin barbs would apply: cool, well-oxygenated water, a substrate of fine gravel or rounded pebbles, and removal of adults post-spawning to protect eggs.
In the aquarium
Pseudobarbus tenuis is not an established aquarium species and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. The Cape redfin barbs as a group are rarely exported or held in captivity; their conservation sensitivity and the regulations around South African freshwater fishes make collection and trade problematic.
Should specimens become available through legitimate conservation programs or captive-breeding projects, the appropriate setup would mirror the species' natural habitat: a cool, well-aerated tank with a flow current, rocky or sandy substrate, sparse planting, neutral to slightly acidic soft water, and a temperature range consistent with the cool-temperate Cape mountain streams. The species would be best maintained in groups reflecting the shoaling tendency of small barbs.
Conservation
Pseudobarbus tenuis is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. Small, geographically restricted cyprinids of the Cape Floristic Region are among the most threatened freshwater fishes in Africa, and Pseudobarbus species more broadly face severe pressure from habitat loss, water extraction for agriculture, alien invasive species (particularly predatory and competitive fish introductions), and the fragmentation of river flows by impoundments — pressures consistent with a Near Threatened classification.
The Cape Fold Belt drainages where these redfins live are considered a global biodiversity hotspot, and several Pseudobarbus species are assessed as Critically Endangered or Endangered by the IUCN, placing P. tenuis's Near Threatened status toward the less severe end of that spectrum even as it signals real cause for concern. Continued monitoring of its population and habitat condition would help ensure the classification keeps pace with any further degradation of the Cape river systems it depends on.
