Puntigrus anchisporus is a small, banded barb endemic to Borneo, where it inhabits clear forest streams and river tributaries across the Kapuas, Mahakam, and Bulungan drainages. Described by the French ichthyologist Léon Vaillant in 1902 from material collected during a Dutch scientific expedition to central Borneo, it is one of four closely related species in the tiger barb complex — the group that gives the genus Puntigrus its name — and was long listed under the synonyms Puntius anchisporus and Systomus anchisporus before modern revision stabilised the current combination. In the wild it is a peaceable shoaler of clean, slightly acidic to neutral water, and it occasionally appears in the specialist aquarium trade as a subtler, wild-type companion to its more familiar relative P. tetrazona.

Taxonomy & naming

Puntigrus anchisporus was described by the French ichthyologist Léon Louis Vaillant in 1902, based on specimens collected during the Dutch scientific expedition to central Borneo. The original description appeared in the expedition's zoological results publication, Notes from the Leyden Museum, under the genus Systomus; the species was subsequently transferred to Puntius and listed for many years under the combination Puntius anchisporus, then also recorded as Systomus anchisporus in some catalogues.

The genus Puntigrus was erected by Kottelat in 2013 to accommodate the "tiger barb" species cluster pulled out of the broadly circumscribed Puntius, a catch-all genus that had accumulated hundreds of Asian barb species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the currently valid combination as Puntigrus anchisporus (Vaillant, 1902), the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer out of the originally described genus. P. anchisporus is most similar to the well-known tiger barb P. tetrazona but is restricted to Borneo and differs in subtle meristic and colouration characters.

Morphology

Puntigrus anchisporus is a small, deep-bodied, laterally compressed barb reaching a maximum total length of approximately 2.5 in, placing it slightly smaller than its congener P. tetrazona. The body plan is typical of the tiger barb complex: a high-backed profile, moderate compression, and bold vertical dark bars on a pale to silvery-gold ground, edged with orange-red on the fins and snout.

Detailed meristic data for the species in the primary literature are sparse in the accessible literature, but the close morphological affinity with P. tetrazona — and the original Vaillant description — confirm the four-banded patterning that defines the group. Distinctions among the Puntigrus species are subtle and require specimen-level comparison; wild-caught anchisporus is best separated from sympatric congeners by range and meristics rather than field colouration alone.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Borneo, recorded from the Kapuas, Mahakam, and Bulungan river systems — drainages spanning the western, eastern, and northern interior of the island. Within these catchments it occupies clear-water forest streams and tributaries, typically with a sandy or rocky substrate, dense marginal vegetation, and water that may carry a light tannin stain from leaf litter and decaying wood.

SeriouslyFish records habitat parameters of 68–79 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, and hardness in the range 18–179 ppm, consistent with the soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to near-neutral freshwaters characteristic of Bornean lowland and foothill streams. The relatively broad hardness range reflects the variety of substrates crossed by the larger river systems within its range.

Feeding

Puntigrus anchisporus is omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates including insect larvae and zooplankton, as well as plant material and detritus. This breadth of diet is typical of small rheophilic barbs in Sundaland forest streams, where prey availability shifts seasonally with water level and leaf fall.

In the aquarium the species accepts standard foods without difficulty — good-quality flakes and micro-pellets form a workable staple, and the diet is improved with regular offerings of live or frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp, along with occasional vegetable matter such as blanched spinach. Varied feeding supports colour expression and general condition.

Mating

Like all members of the genus Puntigrus and the broader barb group, P. anchisporus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond forms, no nest is constructed, and no parental care is given at any stage. When a male is ready to spawn he drives a gravid female actively through fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, closely pressed bursts.

Spawning activity intensifies with warmer water, generous feeding on live foods, and the presence of conspecifics — conditions that stimulate competitive courtship among males. Breeding in the wild has not been formally documented for this species, and aquarium breeding is listed as unrecorded in the specialist literature, though the reproductive biology is expected to follow the standard barb pattern given the close relationship to P. tetrazona.

Breeding

Documented aquarium breeding of P. anchisporus has not been recorded in the available literature, and the species remains uncommon enough in the trade that captive-bred stock is not routinely available. Where attempts are made, the approach used successfully for P. tetrazona is the logical starting point: a shallow, separate spawning tank with very soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0–6.5), fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a bottom layer — mesh or marbles — that lets scattered eggs fall beyond the reach of the adults.

Eggs are adhesive and would be at immediate risk of predation if the parents are left in place; removing the adults after spawning is standard practice. Incubation at tropical temperatures typically takes around 24–36 hours for closely related species, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later. First foods for the fry would be infusoria followed by newly hatched brine shrimp, as with other small barbs. The breeding mode is egg-scattering with no parental care.

In the aquarium

Puntigrus anchisporus appears occasionally in the specialist freshwater trade, typically as wild-caught stock from Borneo. It is a peaceful, active shoaler that is best kept in groups of eight or more, which encourages natural schooling behaviour and distributes the low-level intraspecific sparring that is normal in barbs of this type. Smaller groups can result in subdominant individuals being persistently harried.

The species suits a tank that reflects its native habitat: warm, clean water in the range 68–79 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, and soft to moderately hard conditions, with some planting around the margins, open swimming space in the centre, and good filtration. It is compatible with other peaceful, active species of similar size. Feeding is straightforward, with standard flake and micro-pellet diets supplemented with live and frozen invertebrate foods. Given its relative rarity in the trade, it is worth acquiring from specialist importers who can provide genuine wild-collected Bornean stock rather than mislabelled P. tetrazona.

Conservation

Puntigrus anchisporus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN, a status reflected in FishBase records for the species. Its distribution across several major Bornean river systems — the Kapuas, Mahakam, and Bulungan — gives it a broader range than many single-river endemics, and no evidence of severe population decline has been reported.

Nonetheless, the long-term pressures on Bornean freshwater fauna are well-documented: extensive deforestation, conversion of lowland forest to palm oil plantation, sedimentation of clear-water streams, and hydropower development on larger rivers all degrade the forested stream habitats this species depends on. While P. anchisporus is not currently under acute threat, continued monitoring of Bornean stream fishes is warranted as catchment condition across the island continues to change.
