Taxonomy & naming
Puntigrus pulcher was originally described by the Swedish zoologist Hialmar Rendahl in 1922 under the combination Puntius pulcher, from material collected in Borneo. It was subsequently placed in Systomus — another old catch-all genus — before being treated as a synonym of P. anchisporus (Alfred, 1963), a closely related species in the same complex. The species was revalidated in 2011 on the basis of distinguishing morphological characters, restoring pulcher as a valid taxon separate from anchisporus.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Puntigrus pulcher (Rendahl, 1922), with Puntius pulcher Rendahl 1922 and Systomus pulcher (Rendahl 1922) listed as synonyms. The genus Puntigrus was erected by Kottelat (2013) to house the tiger barb group, a subset of the old, polyphyletic Puntius. Puntigrus pulcher belongs to a cluster of five species sharing the diagnostic four-bar pattern: P. tetrazona (Sumatra and Borneo), P. anchisporus, P. navjotsodhii, P. partipentazona and P. pulcher itself.
Morphology
Puntigrus pulcher is a small cyprinid, with the largest known specimen measuring 1 in standard length (SL); Seriously Fish estimates the likely adult size at 2–2.5 in, consistent with other members of the genus. The body is deep and laterally compressed in the typical barb fashion.
The species shares the characteristic tiger-barb pattern — four black vertical bars on a pale body — but can be distinguished from close relatives by a suite of characters: an incomplete lateral line with 10–11 pored scales, 12 circumpeduncular scale rows, a dorsal fin that is entirely black with the lower anterior portion grey, and black pelvic fins. The bars are approximately 1.5 scales wide. Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical of the group: males are smaller and slimmer, with more intense colouration; females are larger and rounder when carrying eggs.
Habitat
Puntigrus pulcher is recorded from the Kayan River in Kalimantan Utara (the type locality lies near Bulungan in northeastern Borneo) and the Mahakam River in Kalimantan Timur, East Kalimantan. Both river systems drain the interior highlands of Borneo and flow to the Makassar Strait. The species is thus restricted to eastern Borneo within Indonesia.
Based on its congeners and the inferred ecology from Seriously Fish, P. pulcher inhabits forest streams and river tributaries with clear water and sandy to rocky substrates — typical lowland and foothill habitat in the Bornean interior. Water conditions inferred for the group range from soft to moderately hard (18–179 ppm), with a pH of 5.0–7.5 and temperatures of 68–79 °F. The forests around these rivers have faced significant pressure from logging and land conversion, which affects the clarity and continuity of the stream habitats.
Feeding
Like other members of Puntigrus, P. pulcher is an omnivore. Its diet in the wild is inferred to include insect larvae, zooplankton, plant matter and organic detritus — the standard fare for small barbs foraging along stream margins and in the water column among submerged vegetation.
In aquaria, individuals accept a wide variety of foods. Bloodworm, Daphnia and Artemia are suitable live or frozen supplements alongside good-quality dry foods. A varied diet maintains condition and the intensity of fin colouration.
Mating
Puntigrus pulcher is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Courtship follows the pattern typical of the genus: a ripe male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate, and the two fish press briefly together as eggs and milt are released in small batches. No territory is established, no nest is built, and no bond is maintained beyond the spawning event itself.
Colour intensifies in courting males. Because adults readily consume their own eggs, spawning behaviour has to be managed carefully in captivity — the same problem faced with the better-known tiger barb.
Breeding
Puntigrus pulcher has been bred in captivity, though reports are rare; Seriously Fish notes that successful aquarium breeding has been recorded at least once. The method follows the standard approach for the tiger barb complex: a separate shallow spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a mesh or marble layer on the bottom to catch the adhesive eggs before adults can eat them.
Conditioned adults are introduced to the spawning tank and eggs are typically scattered over plants or the bottom in the early morning. Adults are removed after spawning. Eggs hatch in roughly a day at tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later. Initial feeds of infusoria, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp, sustain the fry through early development. Aquarium reproduction generates no parental care whatsoever.
In the aquarium
Puntigrus pulcher occasionally appears in the aquarium trade but is uncommon compared to its close relative P. tetrazona. Its care requirements are inferred to be similar to those of other tiger barbs: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with open swimming areas and some planting, water temperatures of 68–79 °F, a pH in the range of 5.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water in keeping with its Bornean river habitat.
It is a gregarious species and should be kept in groups of at least eight to ten individuals, which distributes the social hierarchy and reduces the risk of fin-nipping behaviour directed at tankmates. Robust, active companions of similar size are appropriate; slow-moving or long-finned species are poor matches. The species's rarity in the hobby means that stock, when available, is typically wild-caught or from limited specialist breeding lines.
Conservation
Puntigrus pulcher is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 12 April 2020. The assessment reflects that the species is not considered to be in immediate danger of extinction across its known range in eastern Borneo.
Nonetheless, its range is restricted to two river systems in East and North Kalimantan, making it inherently less resilient than widespread species. Borneo's lowland forests — and the streams and rivers that drain them — have experienced extensive deforestation, drainage alteration and pollution associated with palm oil cultivation, logging and mining. These pressures affect water quality and habitat continuity throughout the island and represent the primary long-term concern for species like P. pulcher that occupy limited, localised drainages.
