Taxonomy & naming
Tor polylepis was described by Zhou and Cui in 1996 from specimens collected in the Lancangjiang basin, the Chinese reach of the upper Mekong River in Yunnan Province. It belongs to the genus Tor Hamilton, 1822 — the mahseers — a group of large to very large cyprinids distributed across South and Southeast Asia from Afghanistan and Pakistan through the Indian subcontinent to the rivers of Indochina and Sundaland. The genus name Tor derives from a local vernacular name used in northern India.
The specific epithet polylepis means "many-scaled" (from Greek poly, many, and lepis, scale), reflecting the relatively high lateral-line scale count that distinguished the new species from its congeners. Unlike the widespread confusion between certain African barbs and Asian taxa, Tor polylepis is a purely Asian species and was never placed in the African genus Barbus or the African form sometimes called Barbus polylepis (now reassigned to Labeobarbus, a hexaploid African lineage entirely unrelated to the Asian mahseers).
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Tor polylepis Zhou & Cui, 1996. Its relationships within the diverse Tor genus have not been resolved by a modern phylogenetic analysis, and comparative morphological work on the Chinese Tor fauna remains sparse.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum size of 2 in standard length for unsexed or male specimens — a strikingly small figure for a genus that in other species can exceed a metre in length. Whether this reflects a genuinely small-bodied adult size or simply the limited material available from the original description is unclear; no subsequent study has documented larger individuals.
As a Tor species it would share the deep-bodied, somewhat compressed cyprinid form typical of the genus, with a large, subterminal to inferior mouth equipped with thick lips suited to rasping encrusting algae and invertebrates from hard substrates. The "many-scaled" eponym suggests a higher scale count than related species, which would be visible on the lateral line and flanks. Detailed morphometric data beyond what appears in the original description are not publicly available in English-language literature.
Habitat
The type locality is the Lancangjiang basin — the upper Mekong drainage in Yunnan — where FishBase characterises the habitat as freshwater streams with clear water and slow current, benthopelagic in disposition and subtropical in climate. The Lancangjiang cuts through rugged terrain before entering the lowlands of mainland Southeast Asia, and the stream environments it feeds are characteristically cool, well-oxygenated, and rocky or stony-bottomed.
Related Tor species across the genus are strongly rheophilic: they occupy fast-moving reaches of clear hill streams and mountain rivers, requiring high dissolved oxygen (typically above 5 mg/L), rocky or gravel substrates, and cool to warm temperatures depending on elevation. The broader genus tolerates a temperature range of roughly 41–86 °F across all species, with an optimum often cited around 68–82 °F, and a pH band of approximately 6.5–8.5 reflecting the mineral-rich, near-neutral waters of mountain-fed Asian rivers. Tor polylepis, as a hill-stream endemic from a subtropical Chinese watershed, is assumed to share these general requirements.
Feeding
Mahseers in the genus Tor are generally considered opportunistic omnivores with a strong tendency toward algae and aufwuchs grazing supplemented by aquatic invertebrates, fallen fruits, and organic detritus. The thick, somewhat fleshy lips and subterminal mouth position of Tor species are adapted to grazing encrusting material from rocks in fast-flowing water — a dietary strategy well matched to the clean, stony streams of the upper Mekong drainage.
No specific feeding data have been published for Tor polylepis. Extrapolating from related species, the diet likely includes biofilm, diatoms, filamentous algae, and the invertebrates associated with rocky stream substrates such as chironomid larvae, mayfly nymphs, and small crustaceans. The species is not known to be kept or studied in aquaria, so captive dietary observations are absent.
Mating
Like all members of the genus Tor and the family Cyprinidae broadly, Tor polylepis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of eggs or fry. Larger river mahseers are typically seasonal broadcast spawners that undertake upstream migrations to reach gravel-bottomed spawning grounds when water temperatures and flow conditions are appropriate — behaviour recorded for several Indian and Southeast Asian Tor species.
In courtship, males pursue gravid females, with spawning occurring over gravel or rocky substrate as eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the current. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among stones and gravel. No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented specifically for Tor polylepis, and the small adult size recorded for this species raises questions about whether it undertakes the same style of migratory spawning seen in its larger relatives.
Breeding
Tor polylepis is not known to have been bred in captivity, and no aquarium or pond-culture breeding records appear in the available literature. For the genus as a whole, captive breeding of mahseers has been attempted for conservation and aquaculture purposes with several larger species (notably Tor tor and Tor khudree), with mixed success; these programmes typically use hormonal induction and controlled flow conditions to trigger spawning.
The biology of reproduction in Tor polylepis — clutch size, egg diameter, incubation time, larval development — is entirely undocumented. Given its small maximum recorded size, breeding biology may differ substantially from that of the large river mahseers that have attracted the most research attention.
In the aquarium
Tor polylepis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is absent from the ornamental trade, has not been exported or kept by hobbyists so far as any published or widely cited source records, and is known only from scientific specimens. Any Tor species sold in the trade is almost certainly one of the larger, more familiar mahseers or an unrelated barb mislabelled as mahseer.
For completeness: Tor species in general require cool, highly oxygenated, fast-moving water with rocky substrates, a near-neutral pH, and large tank volumes to accommodate their active, rheophilic lifestyle. These demands make the genus challenging in aquaria, and the smallest species — of which Tor polylepis may be one — are simply too obscure and unavailable to have any aquarium profile.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Tor polylepis as Data Deficient (DD) in August 2018. The assessment noted a lack of information on the species' range, population size, population trends, and the direct threats facing it — meaning there is insufficient data to assign it to a threatened or non-threatened category, not that it is necessarily secure. The species is known from a single drainage: the Lancangjiang (upper Mekong) basin in Yunnan Province, China.
The upper Mekong catchment faces a suite of pressures including large dam construction (the Lancang cascade in Yunnan is one of the most intensively dammed rivers in the world), sand and gravel extraction, pollution from agriculture and mining, and introduced species. These pressures are well documented for the broader fish community of the upper Mekong. Whether Tor polylepis is widespread enough within that basin to be buffered against them, or is a narrow endemic highly vulnerable to any local habitat change, is unknown. Targeted surveys to establish its actual range and population status are the obvious priority for any future conservation assessment.
