Taxonomy & naming
Betta splendens was formally described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1910, based on specimens originating from Bangkok, Thailand, which serves as the type locality. The name is maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) as the valid binomial; because it was described in Betta, where it remains, no parenthetical is used in the authority citation.
The species belongs to the splendens group within Betta, a cluster of closely related bubble-nesting species distributed across mainland Southeast Asia. The group includes B. imbellis, B. smaragdina, B. mahachaiensis, and several others that together span the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages and the Malay Peninsula. Hybridisation among splendens-group members is possible in captivity and occasionally in nature where ranges abut, making species boundaries a recurring subject of revision. Betta splendens sensu stricto is understood to centre on the Chao Phraya and central Thai lowlands, though the boundaries are complicated by thousands of years of human-mediated transport for the fighting-fish trade.
Morphology
Wild Betta splendens are modest in size — males typically reach 2–2.5 in standard length, females slightly smaller, around 2 in or less. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with rounded, slightly upturned jaws suited for surface feeding. The suprabranchial organ (the labyrinth) sits above the gill chamber and allows the fish to breathe atmospheric air directly, a trait that defines the suborder Anabantoidei and is critical to survival in the low-oxygen, still waters the species favours.
In nature, male B. splendens are considerably plainer than the balloon-finned, hyper-chromatic domesticated strains familiar from the pet trade. Wild males show iridescent blue-green scales overlaid on a brownish base, with red and blue barring on the fins; the fins themselves are modestly extended compared with show strains but are elongated enough to function in threat displays and courtship. The iridescent scales — the 'splendens' of the species name — catch light differently depending on angle, shifting from dull to brilliant as the fish tilts. Females are subtler: shorter-finned, plainer in colour, and reliably distinguished from males by a small white ovipositor spot visible near the vent.
Habitat
Betta splendens is native to Southeast Asia, with core distribution across Thailand (Chao Phraya basin and central plain), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, extending into the Mekong drainage. FishBase records the type locality as Bangkok and treats it as a slow-moving to standing-water specialist of swamps, rice paddies, flood-plains, and peat-swamp tributaries with dense marginal and emergent vegetation.
Water chemistry across this range is typically soft and acidic to near-neutral: pH 5.5–7.0, temperatures 75–82 °F (75–82 °F). Peat-swamp populations inhabit blackwater conditions — tea-coloured from tannins, very soft, pH as low as 5.5. Paddy populations experience more variable chemistry and occasional warming above 86 °F in shallow water. The labyrinth organ is the physiological key to thriving in these habitats: dissolved oxygen is often very low in stagnant or densely vegetated warm water, and the ability to gulp air at the surface frees B. splendens from the oxygen constraints that exclude most other fish. Dense vegetation — floating plants, overhanging grass, and emergent sedges — is characteristic of all occupied habitat types, providing cover for bubble nests and refuge from predators.
Feeding
Betta splendens is a carnivore in the wild, feeding primarily on small live invertebrates at and near the water surface. The diet includes terrestrial and aquatic insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. The upturned jaw and surface orientation of the fish reflect an adaptation to surface feeding, and the species is an adept snap-feeder on prey that falls or drifts into the surface film.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of prepared foods but does best on a diet that includes live or frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp, and similar — which condition the fish well and maintain colour. Flake and pellet foods are accepted but should not constitute the sole diet. Betta splendens is not a grazer and does not require vegetable matter, though the stomach of wild fish occasionally contains algae taken incidentally with invertebrate prey.
Mating
Male Betta splendens are highly territorial and intensely aggressive toward other males, a behaviour that has given the species its common name and centuries of use in organised fish fights across Southeast Asia. In the wild this aggression functions to monopolise territories that provide suitable bubble-nesting sites — areas of calm surface with vegetation cover — and to attract females. When two males meet, threat displays escalate through erecting gill covers (opercula), spreading all fins to maximum extent, and intensifying body colour before contact fighting begins.
Courtship is initiated when a male detects a ripe female nearby. The male displays with fully flared fins and heightened colour, often wrapping his body around the female in a courtship embrace. Receptive females display a pattern of vertical bars on the body and approach the male's territory, where the bubble nest has already been constructed.
Breeding
Betta splendens is a bubble-nester: the male constructs a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface, typically anchored under a floating leaf, a piece of debris, or overhanging vegetation. Nest construction may begin spontaneously when a male is in good condition, and nest size varies from a small cluster to a substantial raft covering 4–6 in of surface area.
Spawning follows the courtship embrace, during which the pair roll together near the surface and the female releases eggs — typically 10–40 per embrace — which the male fertilises and immediately collects in his mouth, carrying each egg up to deposit it in the bubble nest. The embrace is repeated many times over a spawning session, yielding a total clutch that may number several hundred eggs. Once spawning is complete the male drives the female away from the nest and takes sole responsibility for guarding it, retrieving any eggs or newly hatched fry that fall from the nest and returning them to the bubble raft. At 79–82 °F, eggs hatch in 24–36 hours; fry become free-swimming approximately 48–72 hours after hatching. The male continues to guard the fry until they are free-swimming and dispersing, at which point the nest dissolves and paternal care ends. Fry require very small first foods — infusoria and rotifers initially, followed by freshly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.
In the aquarium
Betta splendens is the world's most widely kept aquarium fish, and the vast majority of individuals in the trade are captive-bred, highly domesticated strains selected over generations for extreme fin length and colour — veil tails, halfmoon, crowntail, delta, and many others — that bear little morphological resemblance to the wild fish. The aquarium care described here applies to wild-type or minimally domesticated stock; show-strain fish share the same basic biology but are more fragile, prone to fin damage, and may struggle to swim efficiently under their own fin mass.
As a labyrinth fish, B. splendens must have unobstructed access to the water surface to breathe air; a lid with a small gap is ideal, as the fish is a capable jumper. The species is tolerant of a wide temperature range (72–86 °F) and moderate water chemistry variation, but does best in warm, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water with low flow — strong currents stress both the fish and the bubble nest. A heavily planted tank provides the visual barriers that reduce male aggression and replicate the dense vegetation of natural habitats. Males cannot safely be housed together; a single male can coexist with females (in a sufficiently large tank with hiding places) and with many peaceful community fish that do not fin-nip. The labyrinth organ means filtration requirements are lower than for similarly sized fish, but good water quality remains essential — B. splendens is sensitive to ammonia and nitrite accumulation in the small containers in which it is often sold and kept.
Conservation
Betta splendens is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List (Vidthayanon, 2011). The primary driver of its decline is habitat loss: the lowland wetlands, peat swamps, and rice paddy systems of central Thailand, the Mekong delta, and the broader Indochinese plain have been extensively converted for intensive agriculture, urban expansion, and water management infrastructure, eliminating or fragmenting the still-water habitat the species requires; pollution of the remaining wetlands compounds the pressure.
The species' extraordinary abundance in captivity — it is produced in the tens of millions annually, primarily in Thailand and Southeast Asia for the ornamental trade — creates a false impression of population health that does not reflect the wild situation. Wild populations are genetically distinct from the long-domesticated aquarium strains and represent an irreplaceable component of Southeast Asian freshwater biodiversity. Conservation attention to the wild fish lags far behind its cultural and commercial prominence, and the Vulnerable listing has yet to translate into meaningful habitat protection for the remaining wild populations of B. splendens.
