Taxonomy & naming
Acanthopsoides gracilis was described by the American ichthyologist Henry W. Fowler in 1934, in his report on the fishes collected during the third De Schauensee Siamese Expedition, published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Fowler erected the genus Acanthopsoides specifically to hold this fish, making A. gracilis its type species by original designation — the genus is monospecific, or very nearly so, with the fish's characters serving as the genus definition itself.
It sits within the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches — the group named for the erectile suborbital spine shared with relatives such as Acantopsis, Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo loach Misgurnus. Cobitoidea taxonomy has been heavily revised over the past few decades (the old genus Botia was split into several genera, and Acanthophthalmus was reassigned to Pangio), but Acanthopsoides gracilis has kept its original combination since 1934, and the Catalog of Fishes continues to list it under Fowler's genus.
Morphology
As the epithet gracilis ("slender") suggests, this is a narrow, elongated loach built for burrowing through sand rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum standard length of only 2 in, making it one of the smaller members of Cobitidae. Like other true loaches it carries a small, erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye, which it can flick out defensively — a feature that, combined with its tiny, deeply embedded scales and largely naked-feeling skin, marks it unmistakably as a cobitid rather than a botiid or nemacheilid.
Detailed colour-pattern and fin-count data for this species are sparse in the readily available literature; the original 1934 description and subsequent regional ichthyofaunal surveys of the Chao Phraya and Mekong basins remain the primary sources of record for its precise morphology.
Habitat
Acanthopsoides gracilis is native to mainland Southeast Asia and western Borneo. It has been recorded from the Chao Phraya and Mekong River basins of Thailand — including the type locality near Chiang Mai — and from the Kapuas River in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater demersal species of a tropical climate, found in medium to large-sized rivers.
This is a warm-water tropical species, not a coldwater one — a distinction worth stressing because several of its Cobitidae relatives (the European spined loaches Cobitis and Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus) are temperate fish suited to unheated tanks or ponds. Acanthopsoides gracilis instead wants the steady warmth of a lowland Southeast Asian river, over a soft sand substrate it can bury into and sift for food.
Feeding
FishBase describes Acanthopsoides gracilis as a bottom feeder taking insects and algae, with a trophic level of roughly 2.6 — placing it as an omnivore leaning toward the herbivorous end, similar in habit to many small sand-dwelling cobitids. Like its relative Acantopsis, the horseface loach, it almost certainly forages by working through the top layer of a soft substrate, picking out small invertebrates, insect larvae and algal material sifted from the sand.
A soft, sand-based substrate is central to how this species feeds naturally, and in the aquarium it should be offered sinking foods it can find at floor level — small live or frozen invertebrate foods alongside algae wafers or vegetable matter — rather than relying on food that stays in the water column.
Mating
No sex-specific external differences have been documented for Acanthopsoides gracilis in the sources available, and courtship or spawning behaviour has not been described. Data on reproduction in this species is sparse; nothing in the cache or established literature supports claims about pairing, courtship displays or spawning triggers, so none are asserted here.
Breeding
As with most members of Cobitidae, Acanthopsoides gracilis is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, in keeping with the reproductive pattern documented across the family — adults release adhesive eggs among vegetation or over the substrate and take no further part in rearing. Several temperate cobitids, including Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and breeders, but the tropical members of the family — including the horseface loach Acantopsis and the genus Lepidocephalichthys — generally have not.
Acanthopsoides gracilis falls firmly into that tropical, unbred category: there is no documented record of it being spawned in the aquarium. It should be regarded, honestly, as a species that has rarely if ever been bred at home, and any specimens in the trade should be assumed wild-collected rather than captive-produced.
In the aquarium
This is a small, modest loach — at roughly 2 in it does not need the vast footprint that larger cobitids or botiids demand, but it does need the right substrate. A soft sand bed is essential so the fish can bury and sift as it would in its native rivers; coarse gravel will frustrate its natural feeding behaviour and can abrade its sensitive, near-scaleless skin. Warm, clean, well-oxygenated water matching its tropical Southeast Asian origins is called for, not the cooler conditions suited to temperate cobitids.
As with all true loaches, the near-absent scale covering makes it more sensitive than an average fish to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments — half-doses and gentle products are the safer approach if disease treatment becomes necessary. Acanthopsoides gracilis is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, and specific long-term care reports are scarce, so a cautious, sand-focused, warm-water setup extrapolated from its confirmed wild habitat is the soundest starting point.
Conservation
Acanthopsoides gracilis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated, following FishBase's designation. FishBase notes the species has high resilience and low vulnerability to fishing pressure, suggesting no immediate cause for concern, though the absence of a formal assessment means no official conservation status exists to cite.
Its range spans river systems in Thailand and western Borneo that face the broader pressures common across Southeast Asia's freshwater habitats — damming, sedimentation, and land-use change along the Chao Phraya, Mekong and Kapuas systems. As a species that is not significant in the aquarium trade, any conservation risk to Acanthopsoides gracilis would stem from habitat pressure on its river systems rather than from collection.
