Neolissochilus subterraneus is a troglobitic cyprinid — a true cave fish — endemic to a single karst cave system in Phitsanulok Province, northern Thailand, within the upper Chao Phraya drainage. It is the only confirmed cave-dwelling member of the genus Neolissochilus, a group otherwise composed of large, fast-water river barbs and mahseers of South and Southeast Asia. Inhabiting a completely lightless underground stream, the fish has adapted to survive on the sparse resources of the cave environment: organic detritus, bat guano, and calcareous ooze. Its extreme range restriction — confined to one named cave — and the pressures of tourism development and agricultural runoff into the catchment have earned it a Vulnerable listing on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Neolissochilus subterraneus is placed in the genus Neolissochilus (Rainboth, 1985), a grouping of large cyprinids allied to the mahseers that ranges from the Himalayan foothills through Indochina and into Sundaland. The species epithet subterraneus is Latin for "underground" or "subterranean", a direct reference to its cave-dwelling habit. The authority for the species is not recorded in available sources.

Within Neolissochilus the species stands apart as the sole obligate cave inhabitant in an otherwise riverine genus. The old broader genus Puntius once served as a catch-all for a vast range of Asian cyprinids, but revisions through the 1980s and 2000s progressively carved out Neolissochilus and related genera on the basis of osteological and meristic characters. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is the governing authority for the valid name; the current placement in Neolissochilus is accepted there.

The fish is registered with the Cave Fishes Registry (UK) as a confirmed troglobite, meaning it is fully adapted to cave life and is not merely a troglophile that also visits surface waters.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 9 in for Neolissochilus subterraneus, making it a medium-large cyprinid by Asian barb standards — a size consistent with the broader Neolissochilus mahseer alliance rather than the small stream barbs of related genera. Detailed published morphological descriptions are sparse in sources available to this account.

As a troglobite, the species is expected to show the classic cave-fish suite of reductive characters — reduction or loss of functional eyes, reduction of pigmentation, and hypertrophy of the lateral line and other mechanosensory systems — though the degree of these adaptations is not fully quantified in the literature to date. Cave-adapted cyprinids in Southeast Asia typically retain the general body plan of their surface relatives, and N. subterraneus appears to maintain the robust, fusiform build associated with the Neolissochilus lineage.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Tham Phra Wang Daeng and Tham Phra Sai Ngam cave systems in Phitsanulok Province, Thailand, within the Chao Phraya river basin. This is a limestone karst environment: subterranean streams fed by percolation and seasonal flood infiltration, flowing in complete or near-complete darkness.

FishBase notes a depth range of 0–7 ft within the cave, with a distinct vertical zonation by life stage: juveniles concentrate near the cave entrance where light and presumably food availability are marginally greater, while subadults and adults penetrate more than 328 ft into the dark interior. No published water chemistry data (temperature, pH, hardness) were found for the cave itself; based on the karst geology and the upland location in northern Thailand, conditions are inferred to be cool and near-neutral, broadly consistent with other SE Asian cave streams, but specific figures are not available and are not stated here.

The cave receives bat colonies whose guano constitutes an important allochthonous energy input — a common feature of tropical limestone cave ecosystems that supports both invertebrate communities and the vertebrate predators and detritivores above them.

Feeding

FishBase characterises the diet of Neolissochilus subterraneus as organic detritus, bat guano, and calcareous ooze — the primary food sources available in a lightless cave environment where there is no photosynthesis-based primary productivity. This detritivorous-scavenging strategy is typical of troglobitic cyprinids across Southeast Asia.

Bat guano deposits on cave floors and ledges represent a concentrated nutrient input, and cave-adapted fishes that exploit this resource effectively can sustain surprisingly large body sizes given the apparent poverty of the environment. The calcareous ooze component suggests the fish also processes fine mineral-organic sediments that accumulate in low-flow cave pools. No data on feeding behaviour or diet breadth in different life stages were found in available sources.

Mating

No specific observations of mating behaviour in Neolissochilus subterraneus have been published in sources available to this account. Based on the biology of the genus and the family Cyprinidae broadly, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of all barbs. In surface-dwelling Neolissochilus, as in mahseers generally, seasonal upstream migrations to gravel spawning grounds are documented; whether a seasonal hydrological cycle in the cave system drives analogous reproductive behaviour in N. subterraneus is unknown.

Cave-adapted fishes frequently show modified reproductive seasonality compared with surface relatives, sometimes breeding in response to food-pulse events (such as heavy bat roosting seasons) rather than photoperiod or temperature cues that are absent underground. Courtship in cyprinids involves the male driving the gravid female over the substrate, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously; there is no pair bond beyond this act.

Breeding

No breeding records for Neolissochilus subterraneus in captivity or documented observations from the cave are available in the literature reviewed here. By analogy with other Neolissochilus and with cyprinids generally, the species is an egg-scatterer: adhesive eggs are broadcast over gravel or other hard substrates and receive no parental care. Adults do not guard eggs or fry, and there is no nest construction of any kind.

In the controlled conditions of a cave with stable hydrology, spawning cues may differ from those governing surface populations of the genus. Fecundity, incubation period, and larval duration are undescribed. Given the species' extreme rarity, its conservation in a wild cave population of unknown size, and the complete absence of captive-breeding programmes documented to date, practical breeding information remains a significant gap in the literature.

In the aquarium

Neolissochilus subterraneus is not available in the aquarium trade and is not a species that responsible hobbyists should seek to collect. It is a Vulnerable troglobite endemic to a single cave system, and its removal from the wild — whether for private collection or for trade — would constitute a direct threat to an already tiny population. The species is mentioned here for completeness in the genus account rather than as an aquarium recommendation.

For aquarists interested in the Neolissochilus genus more broadly, several large river species from South and Southeast Asia — some approaching or exceeding 12 in — occasionally appear through specialist importers. These require very large, well-filtered, highly oxygenated aquaria with significant water movement, cool-to-moderate temperatures, and a varied diet that includes vegetable matter. Cave-adapted forms have specialised environmental needs that cannot be replicated in standard aquarium conditions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Neolissochilus subterraneus as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2 on 24 February 2011. The D2 criterion applies to species with an extremely restricted area of occupancy or number of locations, such that a plausible future threat could drive the species to Critically Endangered or Extinct in a very short period. In this case, the entire known global population of the species occupies a single cave locality.

The IUCN assessment identifies two primary threats: tourism development in and around the cave system, and upstream agricultural pollution entering the karst catchment. The cave at Tham Phra Wang Daeng has visitor access, and increased foot traffic, lighting, and physical disturbance degrade the specialised microhabitat that the fish depends on. Agrochemicals, sediment, and nutrient runoff percolating through the limestone can alter the chemistry and biology of the cave stream, directly affecting both the fish and the invertebrate communities that form its food base. Potential drought impacts — increasingly relevant in a changing climate — represent an additional threat given the species' dependence on consistent cave-stream hydrology.

No captive-assurance population or formal in situ management programme is documented in available sources. Given that the entire species occupies a geographic footprint that could be affected by a single pollution event, a natural disaster, or unmanaged tourism pressure, the species warrants continued monitoring and formal protection of its cave habitat.
