Taxonomy & naming
Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi was described in 2020 by Tiago P. Carvalho and Roberto E. Reis in the journal Copeia, based on material from tributaries of the lower Purus River, a major Amazon Basin river in Brazil. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, and to the small genus Acanthobunocephalus, of which it is only the second described species. The Catalog of Fishes treats Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi as the currently valid name, and no older combination under a different genus is in circulation — this is a recently erected species with a stable placement, not a reclassified one.
The species epithet honours Earl Scruggs, the American bluegrass banjo player, a deliberate play on the family's common name "banjo catfish" — itself a reference to the flattened head and narrow tapering tail shared by all Aspredinidae, which together suggest the body and neck of a banjo. The genus name Acanthobunocephalus combines Greek roots referring to spiny (acantho-) bumps or knobs (bouno-) on the head (cephalus), describing the rough, tubercled skin texture typical of the genus. Carvalho and Reis separated the new species from its only congener and from other small aspredinids by a distinctive reduction in fin-ray counts — four pectoral rays and two dorsal rays, fewer than in related genera — along with other fine anatomical differences.
Morphology
Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi is a genuine miniature, reaching a maximum recorded size of only about 1 in standard length, making it one of the smallest catfishes known to science. Like other banjo catfishes it has a strongly depressed, disc-like head and forebody that tapers abruptly into a slender, elongated tail — the resemblance to the neck and body of a banjo is the source of the family's common name. The skin is naked and scaleless, but roughened with small bony tubercles and plates rather than smooth, a texture typical of Aspredinidae and reflected in the genus name.
Colouration is a cryptic dark brown to blackish above with a paler underside, matching the sandy or leaf-litter substrates it rests on. The species carries the reduced fin-ray formula that distinguishes it from its only congener: notably fewer pectoral, dorsal and pelvic rays than related banjo catfish genera. As with virtually all catfishes it is scaleless rather than scaled, a point that matters directly for aquarium medication dosing, though at this species' scale that consideration is largely academic given it is not established in the hobby.
Habitat
This species is a freshwater, demersal fish known only from tributaries of the lower Purus River, a Amazon Basin river system in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. It lives on the river bottom, almost certainly in sandy or fine-sediment stretches typical of the habitat used by other small aspredinids, where its flattened shape and cryptic colouration let it lie flush against the substrate.
Detailed water chemistry for Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi has not been documented — this is a species described only in 2020 and FishBase does not yet report temperature, pH or hardness data for it. The lower Purus is part of the Amazon's mixed white-water and clear-water tributary network; typical Amazonian lowland conditions of warm, soft, slightly acidic water are plausible for the genus, but this has not been confirmed for the species specifically, and it should not be stated as established fact.
Feeding
No specific dietary study of Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi has been published. Banjo catfishes as a family are nocturnal, benthic micro-predators and detritivores, lying buried or motionless by day and foraging over or just under the sediment surface after dark for small invertebrates, worms and organic detritus. Given its extremely small adult size, this species' prey is necessarily tiny — likely micro-invertebrates and detrital material sifted from fine sediment.
Nothing is documented about its behaviour in captivity, as it is not known to be part of the aquarium trade. Data on this species' diet is sparse, and any statement beyond the general Aspredinidae pattern would be speculation.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi. The species was described from a small number of preserved specimens collected during ichthyological surveys, and no reproductive study has followed. Reporting anything specific about pairing or mating would go beyond what is known — the honest answer is that this aspect of its biology is currently unstudied.
Breeding
Breeding biology in Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi has not been documented. In several other banjo catfishes (family Aspredinidae), females are known to carry fertilised eggs attached to the skin of the belly via small fleshy stalks called cotylephores until the eggs hatch — a distinctive form of external egg-carrying unusual among catfishes. Whether this species shares that strategy has not been confirmed in the literature available for it, and it should be treated as a plausible family-level pattern rather than a documented fact for this species specifically.
This is not a species kept or bred in aquaria; there is no aquarium-trade breeding record to draw on, and given its extremely restricted natural range and tiny adult size, captive breeding has essentially no history to report.
In the aquarium
Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi is not a fish found in the aquarium trade. It is a recently described, range-restricted micro-species from Brazilian scientific collections, not a commercially collected or bred ornamental. Any care information here would be extrapolated rather than observed, so none is offered beyond what applies to the family in general.
What can be said generally about banjo catfishes is relevant if this genus or a close relative is ever encountered in the trade: they are scaleless, naked-skinned fish and therefore sensitive to copper-based and some other medications, warranting conservative, often half-strength dosing; they are nocturnal bottom-dwellers that want fine sand and cover rather than open, brightly lit water; and — as with most catfishes — their true adult size, however modest here, should always be confirmed before purchase rather than assumed. None of this substitutes for real husbandry data on Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi itself, which does not currently exist.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Acanthobunocephalus scruggsi as Vulnerable, an assessment tied directly to its extremely narrow known range in tributaries of the lower Purus River. The species has not been recorded outside this limited area, and the principal identified threat is gold mining in the lower Purus region, which degrades river-bottom habitat through sediment disturbance and mercury contamination — a serious risk for a fish that lives in direct contact with the substrate.
Because the species was only described in 2020 from a handful of specimens, its true range and population size remain poorly known, and further survey work in the lower Purus tributaries would help clarify how much additional pressure the species can withstand. It is not part of the aquarium trade, so collection for the hobby is not a relevant threat; habitat degradation from mining is the concern that matters.
