Taxonomy & naming
Acanthobunocephalus nicoi was described by John P. Friel in 1995. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, within the genus Acanthobunocephalus, a small genus of miniature South American banjo cats. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Acanthobunocephalus nicoi as the currently valid name and genus.
Aspredinidae as a whole has been heavily revised over the past few decades, with several older, broader genera split into narrower ones as researchers worked out relationships within the family; Acanthobunocephalus is one of the genera that emerged from that work. Data on the species is sparse, and no additional detail on the specific etymology of the epithet nicoi is available from the cached sources — it is likely a patronym, following the convention common in Aspredinidae species descriptions, but that should not be asserted without a primary source.
Morphology
Acanthobunocephalus nicoi is minute even by banjo catfish standards, reaching a maximum reported length of only about 1 in standard length. Like other banjo cats it has the family's signature flattened, guitar-shaped body — a broad, depressed head and forebody tapering to a slender caudal peduncle — an adaptation for lying camouflaged against the substrate.
As in all Aspredinidae, the skin is naked and scaleless, instead bearing rows of small bony tubercles rather than true scales. This scaleless skin makes the species sensitive to copper and to many standard fish medications, a consideration that matters more than usual for such a delicate, small-bodied fish. No locking spines or venom have been documented for this genus in the cached sources, unlike some of the family's larger relatives.
Habitat
The species is native to South America, restricted to the upper Orinoco River basin in Venezuela, including tributaries such as the Sipapo, Ramoni and Casiquiare rivers, with the type locality in the Orinoco drainage. It is known from only three localities, and there is a possibility it also occurs in the upper Rio Negro system in Brazil, though this is not firmly established.
It lives along the edges of clear, tannin-stained rivers, sheltering among flooded aquatic plants such as grasses and sedges rather than in open water or heavy current. This vegetated, blackwater-influenced margin habitat, combined with its tiny size, likely helps explain why the species is so rarely encountered and so poorly documented.
Feeding
Acanthobunocephalus nicoi is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging over the bottom mainly after dark for detritus, algae and small invertebrates. This matches the general pattern seen across small Aspredinidae, which pick over fine substrate and leaf litter for whatever edible material they can find rather than actively hunting larger prey.
In the rare case it is kept, it is reported to accept sinking catfish pellets and frozen foods such as bloodworm, blackworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. Given its minute adult size, any offered food needs to be correspondingly small, and because it feeds mainly at night, food is best offered after lights-out so it is not out-competed by more active tankmates.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour for Acanthobunocephalus nicoi have not been documented in the cached sources. Breeding biology in this genus is poorly known generally, which is consistent with the family Aspredinidae as a whole — a group that includes some remarkable reproductive strategies but for which most species have never been observed spawning, in the wild or in captivity.
In several other banjo catfishes the female carries the fertilised eggs attached to her belly skin via fleshy stalks (cotylephores) until they hatch, but this has not been specifically confirmed for Acanthobunocephalus nicoi, and it would be speculative to assert it applies here without direct evidence.

There is no documented aquarium or field breeding record for Acanthobunocephalus nicoi in the available sources. Breeding is reported as poorly known and the species is not commonly, if ever, bred in captivity.
Given the tiny adult size, restricted known range and general obscurity of the genus, it is likely that any wild-caught specimens reaching the hobby are exactly that — wild-caught — rather than the product of any established captive-breeding programme. Anyone attempting to keep this species should not expect to replicate a known spawning method, since none has been recorded.
In the aquarium
Acanthobunocephalus nicoi is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, but its documented needs point to a specialist, small-footprint setup rather than a typical community tank. At a maximum size of about 1 in, it needs to be kept only with similarly tiny, peaceable tankmates — anything larger would readily out-compete it for food or view it as prey. A soft substrate, ideally a couple of inches of fine sand, along with dim lighting and plenty of cover from plants, rockwork or wood crevices, replicates the vegetated river-margin habitat it comes from. It does best kept in small groups and is nocturnal, most active after the lights go down.
As with other Aspredinidae, the skin is naked and scaleless, so this is a medication-sensitive fish — copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, if used at all. It should be moved in a container rather than netted, both to avoid stressing such a small, delicate fish and as standard good practice for scaleless catfishes generally. Because of its extreme scarcity in the trade and minimal documentation, this is not a species to seek out casually, and anyone who does acquire one should treat it as a specialist project.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Acanthobunocephalus nicoi as Least Concern, based on a 2022 assessment. This may seem surprising for a species known from only three localities, but LC assessments for narrow-range fishes often reflect an absence of documented threats within its remote upper Orinoco range rather than confirmed abundance.
Its restriction to specific stretches of the Sipapo, Ramoni and Casiquiare rivers in the upper Orinoco basin, and the possibility of an additional population in the upper Rio Negro system, means its conservation status should be watched as more of the region is surveyed and as pressures such as deforestation, mining and water-quality change reach these remote headwaters. Given how little is known about the species, continued taxonomic and field survey work would be valuable.
