Taxonomy & naming
Acanthodoras cataphractus was originally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 as Silurus cataphractus, one of the earliest catfishes to receive a scientific name — it was later transferred into the genus Acanthodoras within the family Doradidae, the thorny catfishes of South America. The Catalog of Fishes treats Acanthodoras cataphractus as the currently valid combination.
The genus name Acanthodoras combines Greek akantha, "thorn", with Doras, an old catfish genus name, giving "thorn Doras" — a reference to the spiny, plated body shared across the family. The species epithet cataphractus is Latin for "armoured" or "mail-clad", describing the nuchal shield, the rows of bony lateral plates and the serrated spines that cover the fish. In the aquarium trade it is most often sold as the Chocolate Raphael or Chocolate Talking Catfish, names that reference its dark colouration and its ability to make sound.
Morphology
This is a small, heavy-bodied catfish reaching about 4.5 in standard length, a modest adult size that still deserves stating plainly since undersized housing is the most common mistake made with thorny catfish. The body is covered not in true scales but in a single row of overlapping, hooked bony plates (scutes) along each flank, running from behind the head to the tail, giving the fish its armoured look and its common name.
The head is broad and flattened, with three pairs of barbels used to feel out food on the substrate. The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stiff, strongly serrated spine that locks erect and cannot be folded down by force — a genuine hazard to a keeper's net and fingers, and a defence against predators in the wild. Colouration is a dark chocolate-brown to blackish body, sometimes with paler mottling, matching its trade name. Because the skin bears bony plates rather than scales, it should be treated the same as a scaleless fish for medication purposes — conservative dosing of copper-based and other harsh treatments is warranted.
Habitat
Acanthodoras cataphractus is native to the Amazon basin — recorded from Bolivia, Brazil, Peru and Colombia — as well as Atlantic-draining rivers of the Guianas, including Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. It occupies slow-moving lowland rivers, floodplain habitats and tributary streams, typically over soft substrates where it can forage and dig at night.
Water in these habitats is warm, ranging roughly 72–79 °F, with pH around 6.0–7.5 and moderate hardness (roughly 72–447 ppm reported). It is a soft-to-moderately-hard, weakly acidic-to-neutral tropical river fish rather than a specialist of extreme blackwater conditions, and it should not be assumed to need the very soft, very acidic water some other South American catfish require.
Feeding
Acanthodoras cataphractus is a nocturnal, benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages over the bottom after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus and other small food items, using its barbels to locate prey in low light or murky water.
In the aquarium it is an easy, generalist feeder: quality sinking pellets form a good staple, and it readily takes bloodworm, Tubifex, mosquito larvae and earthworms as supplements. Because it is most active at night, offering food after the lights go out helps ensure this shy species is not out-competed by more assertive daytime tankmates.
Mating
Acanthodoras cataphractus is reported to be a pair-bonded cavity spawner. Rather than scattering eggs in open water, a bonded pair excavates a shallow pit in the substrate as a spawning site, a behaviour distinct from the floating bubble-nests of armoured callichthyid catfishes or the internal fertilisation of driftwood catfishes — each family within the catfish order has its own strategy, and this species' cavity-spawning approach should not be confused with either.
Courtship and pair formation in home aquaria are not well documented in accessible sources; keepers wanting to attempt breeding should expect to condition a compatible pair and provide a sheltered, diggable substrate area rather than open swimming space.
Breeding
Spawning follows the pit excavation described above, with eggs reported to incubate for roughly four to five days. Beyond that point, detailed accounts of parental care and fry-rearing in captivity are sparse — this species is only occasionally bred by hobbyists, and reliable published detail on brood care, fry diet and rearing survival is not well established in the sources available.
Given that gap, keepers should treat captive breeding as an uncommon, opportunistic event rather than a reliably repeatable project, and should not assume a level of parental care or fry-rearing ease that has not actually been documented for this species.
In the aquarium
Acanthodoras cataphractus is a hardy, long-lived catfish — commonly cited at 8–10 years with good care — but it is not suited to small tanks: a minimum of around 40 US gal per fish is recommended, sized to its adult length and its need for territory and cover. Provide sand or smooth gravel, since it will dig, plus shelter such as driftwood, roots or caves where it can hide during the day.
Its bony-plated, scaleless-type skin means medications should be dosed conservatively, particularly copper-based treatments. Its dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigidly and are strongly serrated — they readily snag in aquarium nets and can jab or lacerate skin, so this fish is best scooped and moved in a container rather than netted. It is shy and nocturnal, doing best with dim lighting and secure hiding spots, and while peaceful with similarly sized or larger tankmates, it is a capable nighttime predator of very small fish and should not be trusted with tiny fry or nano fish. Doradid catfishes including this species can also produce an audible stridulatory squeak or grunt by rasping their pectoral spines against the shoulder girdle, particularly when handled or stressed — this is a defensive sound, not evidence of venom.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Acanthodoras cataphractus as Least Concern. It has a wide native range spanning the Amazon basin and multiple Atlantic-draining Guianan rivers, and it does not currently face a recognised, range-wide threat.
As with many wide-ranging Amazonian and Guianan fish, localised pressures such as habitat degradation, deforestation and small-scale collection for the aquarium trade are the relevant long-term concerns even where the overall species status remains secure.
