Auchenipterus fordicei is a slender, small-bodied driftwood catfish from the Brazilian Amazon, described by Carl and Rosa Eigenmann in their 1888 revisionary monograph on the genus Auchenipterus. It belongs to Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfish family best known among ichthyologists for an unusual reproductive trick shared across the group: internal fertilisation, with the female storing sperm and laying fertile eggs long after mating. Taxonomy & naming

Auchenipterus fordicei was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1888 as part of their broader revisionary study of the genus Auchenipterus (Valenciennes, 1840). It sits within the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, a Neotropical group whose relationships were later confirmed as monophyletic in phylogenetic work on the family (Zuanon & Sazima and subsequent systematic studies). The genus Auchenipterus itself has been the subject of repeated taxonomic revision since the nineteenth century, and species boundaries within it have shifted more than once as material has been re-examined.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Auchenipterus fordicei as a valid species within the genus. As with many older Siluriformes descriptions, some historical literature has referenced driftwood catfishes under now-obsolete generic placements from that era of nineteenth-century catfish taxonomy, but the current, accepted combination for this species remains Auchenipterus fordicei.

Morphology

Auchenipterus fordicei is a small, elongate, laterally compressed catfish typical of its genus — driftwood cats have a streamlined, almost herring-like profile rather than the squat, heavy-bodied build of many other catfish families, an adaptation for an active, open-water lifestyle rather than a strictly bottom-dwelling one. Maximum recorded size is modest: about 4 in standard length.

Like all catfishes it lacks scales, and its skin is naked and comparatively delicate. The fins carry the stiff, serrated, locking spines typical of Siluriformes at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins — spines that can lock rigid, snag in a net, and jab an unwary hand. The species is known from the Brazilian Amazon, with records including Lago do Coari and the rio Solimões, and from the Rio Yavarí (Javari) in Amazonas state — all part of the vast Amazon basin drainage. At under 4 in standard length, Auchenipterus fordicei stays genuinely small for a catfish and does not present the size trap seen in many larger driftwood cats and other Siluriformes — but a group of an active, schooling, open-water species like this still needs adequate swimming space rather than a cramped tank. As with all catfish, its scaleless skin makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments; dose conservatively and monitor closely if treatment is needed.

Its locking, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines can snag in an aquarium net and jab the keeper, so it is safer to move this fish in a container rather than chase it with a net. Being a nocturnal, benthopelagic species, it will appreciate cover such as driftwood, plants or shaded areas for daytime retreat and is likely to be most visible around dusk and after dark. Tankmates should be peaceful, appropriately sized South American community species that share its preference for warm water.

The IUCN Red List assesses Auchenipterus fordicei as Least Concern, most recently evaluated in November 2018. It is known from multiple Amazon-basin localities in Brazil, and the wider genus Auchenipterus is broadly distributed across the Orinoco, Amazon and La Plata basins and the Guianas.

As an Amazon river-system species, its long-term outlook is tied to the general pressures facing the basin — deforestation, sedimentation, damming and water-quality change — rather than to any known species-specific threat. It is not a species targeted for the aquarium trade in any documented volume, and no population-specific conservation concerns were found in available sources.
