Taxonomy & naming
Akysis bilustris was described by Heok Hee Ng in 2011 in Zootaxa (3066: 61–68), from material collected at the confluence of the Xe Kong and Houai Tamopat, downstream of Ban Khanmaknao, Attapeu Province, Laos. It belongs to the family Akysidae, the stream catfishes, within the genus Akysis, a large group of small, secretive Asian hillstream catfishes spread across Indochina, Myanmar, Thailand, Sundaland and beyond. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Akysis bilustris as a currently valid name in Akysidae.
The genus Akysis is separated from other Asian catfish lineages by a suite of skeletal and fin characters rather than by anything visible at a glance; species-level identification in the genus typically relies on close morphometric comparison, which is why the original description leans on measurements such as body depth at the anus (11.4–13.8% SL) and caudal-peduncle proportions (length 19.6–23.4% SL, depth 6.7–9.2% SL) to separate bilustris from its relatives. As with many recently described Akysis, there is no evidence the species was ever placed in an older catch-all genus such as Pimelodus or Bagrus — it was erected directly within Akysis from the start.
Morphology
Akysis bilustris is small even by the standards of its genus, reaching a maximum recorded size of only about 1 in standard length. Like other akysids it has a flattened head, a slender scaleless body, and barbels around the mouth used to feel out food on the streambed. The skin is naked rather than armoured, which — as in loaches, puffers and eels — makes it noticeably more sensitive to medications than a scaled fish.
The species carries the defining Akysidae feature: a venom apparatus at the base of the dorsal and pectoral spines, capable of delivering a painful sting if the fish is handled carelessly. These spines also lock rigidly erect and can snag in aquarium nets, so the fish is best coaxed into a small container rather than netted. Precise colour pattern and fin-ray counts are documented in the original description but are not widely reproduced outside the primary literature; data on this specific point is sparse beyond the taxonomic paper.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Xe Kong drainage, a Mekong subdrainage in Attapeu Province, southern Laos near the Cambodian border, and specifically from two geographically proximate collection sites. This places it firmly in the fast-flowing hillstream habitat typical of the genus Akysis — clear, oxygen-rich water running over rock, gravel and sand substrates in Indochina's upland tributaries.
No detailed water-chemistry data has been published for the type locality itself. General care guidance for the genus (drawn from related, better-documented Akysis species) points to soft, mildly acidic-to-neutral water in the roughly pH 6.0–7.2 range and cool-to-moderate temperatures around 62–75 °F, consistent with a fast-flowing Southeast Asian stream rather than a warm lowland river. These figures should be read as genus-level guidance, not confirmed values for A. bilustris specifically.
Feeding
No feeding data has been published for Akysis bilustris specifically. Based on the well-documented ecology of its genus, it is almost certainly a nocturnal benthic micropredator, foraging over the stream bottom after dark for small aquatic invertebrates such as crustaceans, worms, insect larvae and zooplankton.
In the aquarium, genus-typical care calls for live or frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp, glassworm — offered after lights-out so this small, retiring fish is not out-competed by more active tankmates at feeding time. It is unlikely to take dry foods readily and should not be expected to compete for food in daylight.
Mating
No spawning behaviour has been documented for Akysis bilustris. The species has not been reported to breed in captivity, and courtship, spawning triggers and egg-laying behaviour remain unknown. Data is sparse to the point of absent for this specific point of its biology.
Breeding
There is no published or hobby-documented record of Akysis bilustris being bred in the aquarium. As with the great majority of small Asian hillstream Akysidae, it should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity — supply, where it exists at all, would be wild-collected. Prospective keepers should not expect to reproduce this species and should be honest with themselves that acquiring it likely draws on its already narrow, two-locality wild range.
In the aquarium
Akysis bilustris is not established in the aquarium trade and is essentially unknown in hobbyist circles; anyone encountering it should treat it as a specialist proposition. Its real adult size is tiny — around 1 in SL — so this is emphatically not a fish that needs a large tank, but its narrow habitat requirements (cool, flowing, well-oxygenated hillstream water) are demanding to replicate and it will not thrive in a static, warm community setup.
Two care points follow directly from its biology as an akysid. First, its skin is scaleless, so it is medication-sensitive — treat conservatively and avoid full-strength copper-based medications, as with loaches and eels. Second, it carries a genuine venom apparatus on its dorsal and pectoral spines, capable of a painful sting; always move it in a container rather than a net, and handle with care. Provide soft sand or fine gravel, plenty of hiding cover, and a gentle-to-moderate current with good oxygenation, and expect it to be strictly nocturnal, hiding by day and emerging to forage after dark.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List lists Akysis bilustris as Data Deficient. The species is known only from two geographically proximate localities in the Xe Kong drainage of Laos, near the Cambodian border, and no population trend, abundance estimate or specific threat assessment has been published.
A range this narrow is inherently a conservation concern even in the absence of a formal threatened listing — any single event affecting the Xe Kong at Houai Tamopat, from damming to sedimentation to pollution, could disproportionately affect the entire known population. There is no indication the species is presently targeted by the aquarium trade, which is itself likely a reflection of how poorly known it is rather than evidence the wild population is secure.
