Taxonomy & naming
Akysis fuliginatus was described by Heok Hee Ng and Walter J. Rainboth in 2005. It belongs to the family Akysidae, the stream catfishes of Asia, within the large genus Akysis, and is placed by FishBase in the Akysis variegatus species group, a cluster of small, similarly built Mekong-basin species.
The genus name Akysis has no straightforward classical etymology and is treated as an arbitrary catfish-genus name coined in the older Asian-catfish literature; the species epithet fuliginatus is Latin for "sooty" or "full of soot", referring to the fish's dark, smoky body colour. The type locality is in the Mekong River on the western edge of Kaoh Han, near Stung Treng, Cambodia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Akysis fuliginatus as the currently valid name; as with much of the Akysidae, older Asian-catfish literature grouped superficially similar small hillstream species together, and species boundaries within Akysis have been clarified only gradually as taxonomists like Ng have revised the genus.
Morphology
Akysis fuliginatus is a small, slender stream catfish, reported at roughly 1.5–2 in standard length in the related, similarly sized congener Akysis hendricksoni, a useful proxy given how little independent size data exists for fuliginatus itself. FishBase records diagnostic body proportions for the species: caudal peduncle depth about 10.1–10.5% of standard length, body depth about 14.1–16.6% SL, and an adipose-fin base around 15.1–19.5% SL — figures used to separate it from its close relatives in the variegatus group.
Like all Akysidae, it is completely scaleless, with naked skin rather than bony plates. It carries the family's characteristic venom-bearing spines at the base of the dorsal and pectoral fins — a genuine sting risk, not just a mechanical jab, and something every keeper needs to respect when handling the fish. Its overall colouration is dark and sooty, in keeping with its name, helping it disappear against river-bottom gravel and stone.
Habitat
This species is known from the lower Mekong River basin in Cambodia, where it was collected from the main river channel near Stung Treng. Like other small Akysidae it is a bottom-dwelling stream fish, sheltering by day among rocks, gravel and coarse substrate in flowing water and emerging to forage after dark.
Direct water-chemistry data for A. fuliginatus itself is sparse, but the closely related, similarly sized Akysis hendricksoni is documented from cooler, soft-to-moderately-hard water — roughly 62–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, hardness around 36–215 ppm — consistent with flowing Southeast Asian streams rather than still, warm blackwater. Given the shared genus, body plan and Mekong-basin range, similar conditions are a reasonable starting point for fuliginatus, though this should be treated as an inference from a relative rather than a confirmed figure for the species itself.
Feeding
Akysis fuliginatus is presumed to be a nocturnal benthic micro-predator, in line with its genus and family: foraging the substrate mostly after dark for small aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, rather than competing for food in open water during the day.
No feeding data specific to A. fuliginatus was found, but the closely related Akysis hendricksoni takes live and frozen foods — brine shrimp, Daphnia, bloodworm — readily, while being reluctant to accept dried foods. A sensible approach for fuliginatus is to offer small live or frozen invertebrate foods after lights-out, mirroring how it would feed in its home river.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour for Akysis fuliginatus itself is undocumented. Hobbyist reports for the genus (from a PlanetCatfish forum discussion on breeding Akysis) describe spawning being triggered by a large, cool water change — roughly an 80% change dropping the temperature from around 86 °F down to about 73 °F — mimicking the onset of a rainy season in the wild. Beyond that seasonal cue, essentially nothing specific has been published about pair formation or spawning site choice in this species.
Breeding
Akysis are generally thought to be egg-scatterers with no parental care, based on the limited hobbyist accounts available for the genus — after the cool, heavy water change described above, eggs are released over the substrate rather than into a nest or cave, and neither parent is reported to guard them. In related small Akysidae, eggs are said to hatch in about four days with fry absorbing their yolk sacs by around ten days, though this comes from a congener rather than confirmed data for A. fuliginatus.
No confirmed captive breeding of Akysis fuliginatus has been documented in the sources available here. Given how little is published even at the genus level, this is a species best approached as essentially unbred in the hobby — anyone attempting it would be working from inference rather than an established protocol.
In the aquarium
Akysis fuliginatus stays genuinely small — around 1.5–2 in as an adult, based on the closely related A. hendricksoni — so a modest, well-filtered stream-style tank with a moderate current and a gravel or fine-rock substrate suits it far better than a large show tank. Provide plenty of cover: smooth stones, driftwood and leaf litter to shelter in during the day, since like most Akysidae it is nocturnal and secretive.
Two care points follow directly from its biology. First, it is scaleless, so treat it as medication-sensitive — dose copper and many standard treatments conservatively, as you would with loaches or other naked-skinned catfish. Second, it carries venom-bearing spines at the dorsal and pectoral fin bases; these can deliver a genuinely painful sting, not just a scrape, so never handle the fish directly and move it in a container rather than a net. Keep water cool-to-moderate and soft to only moderately hard, avoid boisterous tankmates that might out-compete a fish this small for food, and feed live or frozen invertebrate foods after dark.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List lists Akysis fuliginatus as Data Deficient, meaning there is not enough information on its population size, range extent or trends to assign a threat category. This is a common status for small, narrowly documented Mekong-basin stream catfishes that receive little targeted survey effort.
As a Mekong River species, it is potentially exposed to the same broad pressures affecting the basin's fish fauna generally — damming, sedimentation, water-quality changes and habitat alteration along the mainstem and its tributaries — though no species-specific assessment of these threats has been published. Any aquarium specimens in the trade should be assumed wild-collected rather than captive-bred, given the complete absence of documented breeding.
