Taxonomy & naming
Akysis prashadi was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1936. It belongs to the family Akysidae, the stream catfishes of South and Southeast Asia, and to the genus Akysis, a large group of small, hillstream-dwelling catfish species distributed from India through mainland Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Akysis prashadi as a valid species, and it has stayed in the genus Akysis since its original description rather than passing through the older, broader catfish genera that absorbed many of its relatives historically.
The genus name Akysis is a coined ichthyological name for this group of small Asian stream catfishes; the species epithet prashadi honours a colleague or collector associated with Hora's work in British India (a common pattern in Hora's dedications of the period). The species is best known outside taxonomic literature by its trade name, the Indawgyi stream catfish, after its type locality on the shore of Lake Indawgyi.
Morphology
Akysis prashadi is a small, elongate stream catfish with the flattened head and slender, tapering body typical of Akysidae — an adaptation for hugging the substrate in fast current. It reaches a maximum recorded size of only about 2.5 in standard length (FishBase), with most sources agreeing on a typical adult size of 2–2.5 in, making it one of the smaller catfishes an aquarist is likely to keep.
As in all akysids the skin is naked and scaleless, which matters directly for medication (see "In the aquarium"). The species carries a venom apparatus at the base of its dorsal and pectoral spines, capable of delivering a painful sting if the fish is mishandled — the spines themselves are stiff and can lock, so netting risks both a snagged net and an accidental jab to the keeper. Sexual dimorphism has been noted in the trade: females reportedly show larger ventral fins and deeper pectoral fins than males, though this has not been formally studied.
Habitat
The species is native to the Lake Indawgyi drainage in Kachin State, northern Myanmar, with its type locality on the southern shore of the lake near Kamaing. It inhabits swift-flowing freshwater streams and rivers feeding the lake system, where it shelters among stones and coarse substrate out of the main current by day.
Water in its home streams is cool to moderate and close to neutral: reported temperatures span roughly 62–81 °F across sources (cooler in upland streams, warmer near the lake shallows) with a pH around 6.0–7.2 and moderate general hardness. This is a hillstream fish of clean, well-oxygenated, moving water rather than a still-water or blackwater species, and it does not tolerate poor water quality or high nitrates well.
Feeding
Akysis prashadi is a nocturnal, benthic micropredator that forages low over the substrate after dark, picking off small invertebrates. Multiple hobbyist sources describe it as a selective feeder that largely ignores dried or prepared foods, instead requiring live or frozen fare — bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), glassworm and similar small live foods.
In the aquarium this makes feeding a more deliberate task than with most catfish: offer live or frozen foods after lights-out, ideally via a feeding tube or by target-feeding, so this shy, small fish is not out-competed by faster tankmates for food it will actually eat. Keepers should not expect it to take flake or pellet food reliably.
Mating
Little is documented about courtship in Akysis prashadi specifically. One hobbyist source (ScotCat) reports that males construct shallow nests in rocky substrate, suggesting a cavity- or nest-associated spawning strategy broadly consistent with other small Akysidae, but detailed behavioural observations of pairing and spawning have not been published. Sexing outside of spawning condition relies on the reported difference in fin size between the sexes rather than colour.
Breeding
Breeding in this species is not well documented. Spawning has reportedly occurred both in home aquariums and at public aquarium facilities, with males building shallow nests in rocky substrate, but the subsequent development of the fry has not been recorded in the available literature — a rare case of a catfish being coaxed to spawn without anyone having yet documented what happens next. For context, a related species, Akysis vespa, has been bred by hobbyists using a temperature drop of a few degrees to trigger spawning, with eggs hatching in around four days; this may offer a starting point for anyone attempting A. prashadi, but it should not be assumed to apply directly. This is not a fish with an established, repeatable home-breeding protocol, and most individuals in the trade are wild-collected rather than captive-bred.
In the aquarium
Given its true adult size of around 2.5 in, Akysis prashadi is genuinely suited to a nano or small species setup — a real exception to the usual catfish size trap, though it still needs the right conditions rather than just a small footprint. Provide a sand substrate with rounded stones, driftwood and some vegetation, moderate to strong water flow, and immaculate, low-nitrate water at roughly 62–81 °F and pH 6.0–7.2; it is a fish of clean, moving hillstream water, not a static tropical community tank.
Because it is scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based and many other medications — treat conservatively, at reduced dose, as with loaches and other naked-skinned catfish. Its dorsal and pectoral spines carry a venom apparatus and can lock, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted, and handled with care. It is nocturnal and secretive, so give it caves, rockwork and shaded cover, and expect to see it mainly after the lights go down; it is reported to be non-aggressive and can be kept singly or in a group with appropriately small, peaceful tankmates that won't outcompete it for its live-food diet.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Akysis prashadi as Least Concern, based on a 2009 assessment. It is restricted to the Lake Indawgyi drainage in Kachin State, Myanmar, a single freshwater system, which makes it inherently more vulnerable to localised pressures than a widespread species even at a favourable current status.
Lake Indawgyi is Myanmar's largest inland lake and a designated wildlife sanctuary and Ramsar wetland, which affords the drainage some protection, but regional pressures on Southeast Asian hillstreams generally — sedimentation, deforestation, and water extraction — remain long-term concerns for a single-basin endemic like this one. Aquarium specimens appear to be wild-collected rather than farmed, so trade demand should be considered alongside habitat pressures.
