Taxonomy & naming
Akysis pulvinatus was described by Heok Hee Ng in 2007. It belongs to the family Akysidae, the stream catfishes, a group of small benthic catfishes found in fast-flowing streams across South and Southeast Asia and distinct from the related Asian hillstream families Sisoridae and Amblycipitidae. The genus Akysis is one of the largest in the family, with dozens of species spread across Thailand, Myanmar, Indochina, Sundaland and neighbouring regions, many of them narrow-range stream endemics described only in the last few decades.
The genus name Akysis derives from the Greek prefix a- (without) combined with kysis (bladder), an old anatomical reference used in naming several Asian catfish genera. The species epithet pulvinatus is Latin for "cushioned" or "padded", likely referring to the fish's soft, fleshy body texture. As with many recently described akysids, data on this species remains sparse — it is known mainly from its original description and a handful of subsequent notes.
Morphology
Akysis pulvinatus is minute even by akysid standards, reaching a maximum recorded size of only about 1 in standard length (roughly 1 in) — among the smallest catfishes an aquarist is likely to encounter. The body is brown with a yellowish snout, an elongated adipose fin base running much of the length of the back, and a small forked caudal fin whose lower lobe is longer than the upper.
Like other akysids the skin is entirely scaleless (naked), which affects both its sensitivity to medication and its need for pristine water quality. It carries stiff, serrated spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins that lock erect; in this genus these spines are venomous, and a jab from a mishandled fish can cause real pain, so this catfish should always be moved in a container rather than netted or handled bare-handed.
Habitat
The species is endemic to a narrow slice of the western Kra Isthmus in peninsular southern Thailand, found in small streams draining west to the Andaman Sea and in the upper Tapi River basin. These are fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hillstreams with soft, sandy substrate rather than the boulder-strewn torrents favoured by some other hillstream catfishes.
Water in this range is soft and slightly acidic to neutral, with the original description reporting a temperature range of roughly 62–74 °F, pH 6.0–7.2 and hardness of about 36–215 ppm — cooler than the tropical norm assumed for most Southeast Asian aquarium fish, reflecting shaded, spring- or hill-fed stream conditions rather than lowland rivers.
Feeding
Akysis pulvinatus is a nocturnal benthic micropredator, foraging along the streambed after dark for small crustaceans, worms and aquatic insect larvae. Its tiny mouth and size restrict it to correspondingly small prey items.
In the aquarium it should be offered small live or frozen foods after lights-out — Artemia (brine shrimp nauplii or adults sized to the fish), Daphnia and chopped bloodworm are all suitable. Because it is strictly nocturnal and easily outcompeted by more boisterous tankmates, feeding once the lights are off and other fish have settled gives it the best chance of getting enough food.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour for Akysis pulvinatus have not been documented in the available literature; data is sparse for this recently described, narrow-range species. Breeding in related, better-studied Akysis species has reportedly been triggered by a drop in water temperature of around 45 °F, mimicking a seasonal cue such as the onset of cooler, wetter conditions in the streams these fish inhabit, with eggs hatching after about four days — but this has not been confirmed for pulvinatus itself and should not be assumed.
Breeding
There is no confirmed record of Akysis pulvinatus being bred in the aquarium, and its reproductive biology in the wild is essentially unstudied. Given the pattern reported for related Akysis species — a temperature-drop trigger and eggs hatching within a few days — a similar approach might plausibly work, but this remains speculative for this species rather than an established method.
Prospective breeders should treat this as an open question: providing stable, high-quality water with a seasonal cooling cycle is a reasonable starting point, but success has not been documented, and honest expectations should be set accordingly. This is not a fish to acquire with breeding as the goal.
In the aquarium
This is a genuinely tiny catfish — under 1 in as an adult — but its space needs are about water quality and flow, not raw tank volume: a well-established, mature aquarium with strong filtration, high oxygenation and soft sandy substrate suits it far better than a large but poorly matured tank. Water should be kept soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral (pH roughly 6.0–7.2) at cool-to-moderate tropical temperatures (62–74 °F), cooler than most Southeast Asian community setups, so it is not a fish to mix casually with typical warm-water tankmates.
Being scaleless, it is sensitive to copper and many medications and should be dosed conservatively if treatment is ever needed. Its dorsal and pectoral spines lock erect and are venomous, so it must be moved in a container rather than netted. It is strictly nocturnal and wants fine sand and shaded cover to retreat into during the day, emerging to hunt small live and frozen foods after dark. Given its minute size and specific requirements, it is best suited to a dedicated species or biotope setup with other small, gentle streambed fish rather than a general community tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Akysis pulvinatus as Data Deficient. As a narrow-range endemic restricted to a small area of streams on the western Kra Isthmus, detailed population and threat data are lacking, and the species may be subject to incidental capture in local artisanal fishing rather than targeted collection.
Stream habitats in this region face general pressures from land-use change, water extraction and pollution, but without dedicated survey data the specific conservation status of this species cannot be stated with confidence — a case where honest uncertainty is the correct assessment rather than an assumed status.
