Taxonomy & naming
Akysis vespa was described by Heok Hee Ng and Maurice Kottelat in 2004, in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 15(3):193–200. It belongs to the family Akysidae, the stream catfishes of Asia, within the large genus Akysis, which contains dozens of small, similar-looking hillstream species across South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Akysis vespa as the valid name; it has not been shuffled through other genera since its description.
The epithet vespa is Latin for "wasp", a direct reference to the species' venom-delivering spines and the sting they can inflict — an unusually blunt piece of taxonomic naming for a catfish barely three centimetres long. As with many small Akysis, the species is best distinguished from its relatives by fine details of colour pattern and spine morphology rather than anything visible at a glance.
Morphology
Akysis vespa is minute even by Akysis standards, reaching only about 1 in standard length as an adult — this is a genuinely tiny catfish, not a juvenile-looking version of something larger. Like other akysids it has a flattened head, a slender scaleless body, and barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the streambed in the dark.
The skin is completely naked, without scales or bony plates, which makes the species more delicate and more medication-sensitive than armoured catfishes. At the base of the dorsal and pectoral spines sits a venom apparatus — a trait shared by all akysids — capable of delivering a sting that is painful to a human but not dangerous to a healthy adult. The spines themselves are stiff and can lock erect, so the fish should be moved in a container rather than netted.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Ataran (Attaran) River drainage in Myanmar (Burma), a hillstream system with fast current and rocky or gravelly substrate. Akysis catfishes as a group are specialists of clear, well-oxygenated, flowing water, typically clinging to or hiding among stones rather than swimming in open water.
Recorded conditions for Akysis vespa are on the cool side for a tropical fish — roughly 62–74 °F — with a pH of about 6.0–7.5 and moderate hardness (roughly 36–215 ppm). This is a cool, well-oxygenated hillstream fish, not a warm, still-water species, and its native range gives no support for keeping it as a soft acidic blackwater fish or a standard tropical community species.
Feeding
Akysis vespa is a nocturnal benthic micropredator, foraging over the stream bottom after dark for small invertebrates. In the wild this likely means aquatic insect larvae and other tiny bottom-dwelling prey picked out from among the gravel with the aid of its barbels.
In the aquarium it is reported as a picky feeder that does best on small live or frozen foods — Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm and glassworm — and may refuse dried or flake foods outright. Because it feeds mainly at night, offering food after lights-out gives it the best chance to find its share without competition from more active tankmates.
Mating
Spawning in Akysis vespa has been observed to follow a drop in water temperature of roughly 45 °F, mimicking a seasonal cooling event in its home stream — a cue rather than a courtship display in the usual sense. When conditions trigger spawning, males wrap around females in the manner reported for several small Akysidae, a physical embrace associated with fertilisation.
Beyond this temperature cue and the wrapping behaviour, little else about pairing, site selection or courtship in Akysis vespa has been documented, and the species is not established as a routine aquarium breeding project.
Breeding
Following the temperature-drop trigger and the male's wrap around the female, eggs are laid and reported to hatch after about 4 days; the yolk sac is absorbed by around 10 days, and fry reach the adult colour pattern by roughly 23 days. There is no indication of a nest, cave or the sustained parental guarding seen in some other catfish families — this is not a bubble-nest species and not a mouth- or belly-brooder.
This life-history detail comes from a small number of documented spawnings rather than routine hobby breeding, and Akysis vespa should be considered a species that is only occasionally reproduced in captivity. Anyone attempting it should be prepared to replicate cool, flowing, well-oxygenated water and a genuine temperature drop to trigger the event, rather than relying on typical community-tank conditions.
In the aquarium
At barely 1 in, Akysis vespa never grows into a demanding fish for space, but it does demand water quality: strong flow, high dissolved oxygen and cool-to-moderate temperatures (roughly 62–74 °F) with a pH of 6.0–7.5. A powerhead or river-style filter outflow, a fine gravel or rounded-stone substrate, and plenty of hiding spots among smooth rocks come closest to its hillstream home; it does poorly in warm, still, standard tropical setups.
Because it is completely scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively, as with loaches and other naked-skinned catfish. It also carries venomous spines at the base of the dorsal and pectoral fins capable of a genuinely painful sting, so it should always be moved in a net-free container rather than handled or netted directly. Being nocturnal, it needs shaded retreats for the day and is best appreciated after lights-out or under dim viewing light, alongside other small, peaceful cool-water or hillstream species rather than boisterous tropical community fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Akysis vespa as Data Deficient, last evaluated in 2010. As a narrow-range endemic of the Ataran River drainage in Myanmar, it has not been the subject of enough survey work to establish a confident population trend or threat status.
As with many small, poorly known hillstream catfishes, habitat pressures on Southeast Asian rivers — damming, sedimentation, deforestation of watersheds and water extraction — are the kinds of generic threats likely to matter most, but no species-specific assessment exists to confirm their impact on Akysis vespa specifically. The aquarium trade in this species, where it appears at all, relies on wild-collected fish.
