Taxonomy & naming
Amaralia oviraptor was formally described by John P. Friel and Mário de Pinna Carvalho in 2016, in a paper published in the journal Zootaxa (4088(4)) dedicated to a new species of Amaralia from the Paraná-Paraguay River Basin. The holotype, catalogued as MZUSP 4423 and measuring 2.5 in SL, was collected at Santo Antônio do Paraná, Mato Grosso, Brazil — the species' type locality. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, within the order Siluriformes.
The genus Amaralia was erected by Henry Weed Fowler and honours the Brazilian naturalist Afrânio do Amaral. Amaralia is a small genus of banjo catfishes restricted to South America; A. oviraptor is one of only a couple of described species in it, distinguished from its closest relative, A. hypsiura, by details of body proportions and pigmentation described in the original paper. As with much of the Aspredinidae, older aquarium and hobby literature predating the 2016 description would not have recognised this species separately, since it was only split out and formally named that year.
Morphology
Amaralia oviraptor shows the classic banjo-catfish silhouette: a broad, flattened, bony head and forebody that narrows abruptly into a long, slender, almost eel-like tail, giving the whole animal the outline of a banjo or tadpole lying on its side. The skin is naked — Aspredinidae have no scales at all, and the body surface instead carries small tubercles and rough skin texture rather than true dermal armour.
The species reaches a modest maximum size of about 5 in SL (standard length), based on measured specimens; the type specimen itself was much smaller, at 2.5 in SL. Colouration in banjo catfishes of this genus is typically a mottled, cryptic brown-to-grey pattern that breaks up the body outline against a silty or leaf-littered bottom — camouflage suited to an ambush lifestyle rather than an active swimmer. Because the skin is scaleless, this species should be treated as medication-sensitive, in the same way loaches, puffers and true eels are: copper-based and many other treatments should be dosed conservatively, often at half strength, to avoid harming the fish.
Habitat
The species is documented from lagoons and associated waters of the Paraná-Paraguay river system, spanning parts of Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina. It is a freshwater, demersal, tropical fish — meaning it lives on or very near the bottom rather than in open water, consistent with the sedentary, ambush habits typical of banjo catfishes.
Detailed water chemistry for the species has not been reported in the available literature, so specific pH, hardness or temperature figures should not be assumed. The Paraná-Paraguay basin spans a range of habitats from clearer tributaries to turbid, silt-laden lagoon margins, and as a warm-water South American lowland species it is reasonable to expect it favours the tropical, circumneutral conditions typical of the region — but this has not been confirmed for A. oviraptor specifically, and data on its precise water requirements remains sparse.
Feeding
Amaralia oviraptor is an oophagous specialist — its diet centres on the eggs and developing embryos of other catfishes, a striking and unusual feeding strategy reflected directly in its species name, oviraptor ("egg robber" or "egg plunderer", from Latin ovum, egg, and raptor, plunderer). This kind of predation on other fishes' spawn is consistent with the broader Aspredinidae, several of which are known nocturnal bottom foragers that exploit soft, undefended food items rather than pursuing active prey.
Little further detail on foraging behaviour or dietary breadth has been documented for this species in the literature reviewed, and nothing is recorded about its response to aquarium foods, since it has no known aquarium history. Any care approach would need to start from its wild specialisation on eggs and embryos rather than assuming it is a generalist bottom scavenger.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Amaralia oviraptor in the sources reviewed. The species was described from a small series of preserved museum specimens rather than from field observation of live behaviour, and nothing about pairing, timing or spawning triggers is recorded.
Breeding
Breeding biology in Amaralia oviraptor is essentially unknown. The wider family Aspredinidae shows unusual reproductive strategies — in several banjo catfish genera the female carries fertilised eggs attached to the skin of her belly by fleshy stalks (cotylephores) until they hatch — but this has not been documented for Amaralia oviraptor specifically, and it would be wrong to assume it applies here without direct evidence. The species has never been recorded breeding in captivity, and no aquarium spawning account exists. Honestly: this is a case where the data is sparse rather than absent by omission, and any future account should be updated only when a documented observation becomes available.
In the aquarium
Amaralia oviraptor has no established aquarium history — it is a recently described (2016), little-known river-basin endemic known from scientific collections rather than the fishkeeping trade, and it is not something a hobbyist is likely to encounter for sale. Anyone attempting to keep this species should still size a tank to its real adult length of roughly 5 in SL, since assuming a small banjo catfish will "stay tiny" is the classic size-trap mistake with bottom-dwelling catfish generally.
Two care principles carry over from its family even in the absence of a documented care history: the skin is naked and scaleless, so medications — copper treatments especially — should be dosed conservatively, at half strength if possible, exactly as with loaches and other scaleless fish; and, like most catfish, it should be moved in a container rather than netted, since Aspredinidae have rough, tubercled skin that can snag in fine mesh even without prominent locking spines. Given its specialised, egg-based wild diet, it would also be a poor fit for a typical community tank of breeding fish, whose spawn it may target.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Amaralia oviraptor as Least Concern. It is known from the Paraná-Paraguay river system across Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina, a large and only partly threatened basin, which is consistent with a Least Concern rating for a species without evidence of major population decline.
As a recently described, taxonomically obscure species with no aquarium trade presence, the main conservation relevance of Amaralia oviraptor lies in the health of its home basin — the Paraná-Paraguay system, including the Pantanal wetlands it borders — rather than any collection pressure, since it is not currently part of the ornamental fish trade.
