Taxonomy & naming
Amaralia hypsiura was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1855, giving the species its original combination. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae — the banjo catfishes, a family confined to South America — and to the small genus Amaralia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Amaralia hypsiura (Kner, 1855) as the valid name with no recent synonymies or generic transfers recorded.
Aspredinidae sits within the order Siluriformes alongside the many other catfish families, but it is a morphologically distinctive lineage: the extreme dorso-ventral flattening and rough, tuberculate skin that give banjo catfishes their common name are shared by all members. The genus Amaralia is one of several aspredinid genera separated by body proportions, the extent of skin armour, and the shape of the caudal peduncle — the epithet hypsiura refers to the high or elevated tail (Greek hypsi-, high + oura, tail), likely alluding to the proportionally deep caudal peduncle.
Older literature may list this species under different generic assignments; the hobbyist name "banjo catfish" is shared loosely across several aspredinid genera (Bunocephalus, Dysichthys, Agmus and others) and care should be taken to confirm the current binomial when seeking species-level information.
Morphology
Amaralia hypsiura has the unmistakeable banjo catfish silhouette: a broad, heavily flattened head and anterior body that narrows sharply into a slender, round caudal peduncle, producing a shape that is frequently likened to a stringed instrument in side-profile. The skin is entirely scaleless and covered in small tubercles and skin folds that add to its camouflage texture; there is no bony plate armour of the kind seen in loricariid catfishes.
Adult size is around 4 in standard length, with some individuals reportedly reaching 4.5–5 in. Three pairs of barbels are present at the mouth. The pectoral fins bear stiff spines, but Amaralia hypsiura lacks the strongly venomous apparatus of some other siluriform families; the spines can still tangle in a net and score the keeper's fingers, so caution is warranted when handling. The cryptic brown-grey to tan colouration, broken by subtle mottling, renders the fish almost invisible against sand and leaf-litter substrates.
Habitat
FishBase places Amaralia hypsiura in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, with records from the Rio Negro and its tributaries — one of the great blackwater river systems of the Neotropics. The Rio Negro drains an enormous area of lowland forest and carries water stained dark with dissolved tannins and humic acids leached from forest soils; it is exceptionally soft, very low in dissolved minerals and acidic (pH commonly 4.0–6.5 in the main channel, with tributary reaches sometimes exceeding pH 7.0 seasonally).
Amaralia hypsiura lives on or buried in the sandy or silty riverbed, often among submerged leaf-litter and woody debris, and is presumably most active at night. The temperature range reflects equatorial Amazonia: around 75–82 °F year-round. Its native water is among the softest and most acidic that any aquarium fish inhabits naturally, and this should be respected in captivity.
Feeding
Amaralia hypsiura is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging the substrate after dark for small invertebrates, bottom-dwelling insect larvae, and accumulated organic detritus. The broad, downturned mouth and sensitive barbels are well suited to probing leaf-litter and soft substrate for food.
In the aquarium it will accept sinking catfish wafers and pellets, frozen bloodworm and tubifex, and other prepared sinking foods. Because it is largely inactive during the day and will not compete for food when lights are on, feeding should be timed for after lights-out to ensure the fish receives enough. It is a gentle feeder and will be out-competed by more active tankmates if food is offered during the day.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in Amaralia hypsiura has not been reported in detail in the available literature. What is known from the wider Aspredinidae family is that mating is believed to involve internal or close-contact fertilisation, after which the female carries the developing eggs attached to her belly skin by fleshy stalks called cotylephores — a reproductive strategy unique to the banjo catfish family and one of the more unusual parental behaviours among freshwater fish.
Captures of gravid females with eggs visible on the ventral surface have been reported for aspredinids in the genus Bunocephalus and related genera, and the same mechanism is understood to apply broadly within the family. Males and females of Amaralia are not easily distinguished externally; a slightly fuller, broader ventral profile in ripe females may be the best cue.
Breeding
Amaralia hypsiura is essentially not bred in home aquaria, and breeding reports are absent from the available aquarium literature. The distinctive Aspredinidae reproductive mode — females carrying fertilised eggs on cotylephores attached to the belly skin until hatching — has been observed and documented for some family members in nature and in research settings, but replicating it in captivity requires precise conditions and has rarely been achieved by hobbyists.
No specific spawning triggers, water conditioning methods, or aquarium breeding protocols have been established for this species. Keepers should regard this as a display and observational fish rather than a breeding project, and any breeding attempts should be treated as exploratory. Aquarium-collected specimens in trade are almost certainly wild-caught from the Amazon Basin.
In the aquarium
At around 4–4.5 in standard length, Amaralia hypsiura is manageable in a modestly sized aquarium — a tank of 23.5–31.5 in is reasonable for one or a small group — provided the water quality matches its native blackwater. Soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0, very low hardness, 75–82 °F) is important; this is not a species that will thrive long-term in hard, alkaline tap water. Tannin-stained water from dried leaves or peat adds both comfort and authenticity.
Decor should include a deep layer of soft sand or fine substrate into which the fish can partially bury itself, and a generous covering of dried leaf-litter (dried oak or Indian almond leaves work well) plus pieces of bogwood. The fish spends most of the day motionless and concealed; it is rarely seen unless the keeper looks carefully among the leaves. Feed after lights-out with sinking foods.
Two care points require particular attention. First, this is a fully scaleless species: it is significantly more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based treatments, salt, and many standard aquarium medications — always use half-doses or copper-free alternatives and follow the medication manufacturer's guidance for scaleless species. Second, though the pectoral spines are not strongly venomous, they can catch in a net and puncture fingers; move the fish in a container rather than a net. It is otherwise peaceful and can be kept with other small, soft-water species provided tankmates are not small enough to be ingested.
Conservation
Amaralia hypsiura has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is typical for the many small, range-restricted or poorly known Amazonian catfishes that have not yet come before an IUCN assessment working group.
Its known range centres on the Rio Negro system, which is relatively well protected within the Brazilian Amazon and not subject to the intense deforestation and river impoundment pressures affecting some other Amazonian drainages. However, its trade supply appears to rely on wild collection, and any sustained harvest from localised populations in tributary creeks could represent a pressure not captured by the current NE status. As with many specialist blackwater species, the key long-term concern is the integrity of its soft-acidic habitat.
