Amphilius atesuensis is a small, bottom-hugging West African river catfish of the family Amphiliidae — a group sometimes called torrent catfishes or hillstream catfishes — adapted to clear, fast-flowing rocky streams from Liberia to Togo. Reaching a modest 3.5 in standard length, it is a sleek, depressed-bodied fish with broadly expanded pectoral and pelvic fins that form a weak adhesive disc, allowing it to cling to current-swept substrates in the same fashion as hillstream loaches on the other side of the world. It is seldom encountered in the hobby, appearing occasionally in specialist collections rather than the mainstream trade, and its aquarium requirements reflect its rheophilic origins: clean, well-oxygenated water, a moderate temperature, and a firm bottom current.

Taxonomy & naming

Amphilius atesuensis was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1904. It belongs to the family Amphiliidae, a small but distinctive family of African catfishes — the torrent or hillstream catfishes — whose members are adapted to rocky, fast-flowing streams across sub-Saharan Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Amphilius atesuensis as the valid name under the genus Amphilius, which is the largest and most widespread genus in the family.

Amphiliidae are not closely related to the superficially similar Asian hillstream loaches (Balitoridae) or to the torrent catfishes of South America (Astroblepidae); the shared body form is a convergent adaptation to fast water. Within the West African ichthyofauna, the genus Amphilius was historically confused with other small catfish genera, and older literature may place some species in broader or differently circumscribed assemblages. The species name atesuensis refers to the Atesu (Atsu) region of West Africa, following the geographical naming convention common in Boulenger's work.

Morphology

Amphilius atesuensis has the characteristic Amphiliidae body plan: a strongly depressed (flattened top-to-bottom) head and anterior body, large horizontally spread pectoral fins, and broad pelvic fins angled outward. Together the pectorals and pelvics form a loose, frictional surface against the substrate — not a true suction disc, but effective in moderate current. The body tapers rearward to a slender caudal peduncle and a slightly forked tail.

The skin is completely scaleless and unarmoured — Amphiliidae are naked-skinned catfishes, not plated like callichthyids or loricariids. This makes the species susceptible to abrasion on sharp substrate and sensitive to medications, particularly copper-based treatments. Maximum recorded size is 3.5 in standard length (SL); total length will be modestly larger. Males can be distinguished by a longer urogenital papilla, a subtle but consistent character visible in well-conditioned adults. Three pairs of barbels are present: one maxillary pair and two mandibular pairs, all relatively short and used in tactile and chemosensory foraging over the bottom.

Habitat

This species occupies the clear, fast-flowing rocky streams and rivers of coastal West Africa. Its confirmed range spans from the Saint John River in Liberia eastward through Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo's Mono River basin, and into Nigeria, with records also from Mali. It is a rheophilic species — favouring running, well-oxygenated water over still or sluggish reaches — and is typically found over gravel, cobble, or bedrock substrates where current keeps sediment from accumulating.

Water chemistry in these West African lowland and foothill streams is moderately soft to moderately hard (10–20 dH) with a near-neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.5–7.7) and temperatures in the range of 64–72 °F — notably cooler and more neutral than the stereotypical blackwater tropical. High dissolved oxygen, driven by turbulence, is a key habitat requirement. The species is demersal and benthic throughout its life, spending daylight hours concealed under rocks or among leaf litter and becoming active after dark.

Feeding

Amphilius atesuensis is a benthic insectivore and omnivore in keeping with the wider Amphiliidae ecology. It forages nocturnally over the substrate, picking at aquatic invertebrates — midge larvae, mayfly nymphs, small crustaceans — as well as detritus and biofilm scraped from rock surfaces. The broad, flattened head and short barbels suit this close-contact, tactile style of bottom feeding in current.

In the aquarium the species should be offered sinking foods: small sinking pellets, frozen or thawed bloodworm, daphnia, and finely chopped invertebrate foods. Because it is naturally nocturnal and a shy forager, it is best fed after the aquarium lights go off, where it will be free to compete without faster or more assertive tankmates claiming the food first.

Mating

Essentially nothing has been published on the mating behaviour of Amphilius atesuensis specifically, and the species has not been bred in the aquarium hobby to any documented extent. Within the family Amphiliidae, reproductive biology is poorly studied across the board; the genus Amphilius is assumed to scatter adhesive eggs over rocky substrate in fast water, with little or no extended parental care, but this has not been confirmed in detail for this species.

Sexual dimorphism is limited to the male's longer urogenital papilla, which is visible in adults. Gravid females may appear deeper-bodied when in spawning condition. For the aquarist, attempting natural spawning would require replicating the cool, fast-flowing, clean-water conditions of the wild habitat — a significant undertaking that has not been documented as successful in the aquarium literature available.

Breeding

Amphilius atesuensis is not known to have been bred in home aquaria. The breeding biology of the Amphiliidae in general is not well documented, and no confirmed aquarium spawning accounts for this species appear in the available literature. It is reasonable to assume the species deposits eggs on or under rocks in fast-flowing sections of stream, consistent with the habits inferred for the broader genus, but this remains unconfirmed.

Aquarists interested in attempting breeding would need to provide a pronounced current, clean and well-oxygenated cool water (64–72 °F), and structured rockwork offering crevice spawning sites. Conditioning with varied live or frozen invertebrate foods would be the logical approach. Given the dearth of published accounts, any successful breeding would represent a genuine first for the hobby.

In the aquarium

Amphilius atesuensis is an uncommon species in the trade and a niche choice suited to the specialist aquarist. Its most important care requirement is strong, well-oxygenated water movement — powerheads or a dedicated flow pump directed across a cobble-and-gravel bottom will approximate its natural habitat. A temperature of 64–72 °F is cooler than most tropical community tanks, making it a poor mix with warmth-demanding species; it suits cooler-water West African setups or biotope tanks.

As a naked-skinned catfish with no scales or armour, Amphilius atesuensis is measurably more sensitive to copper-based medications and some other chemical treatments than scaled fish — use half-dose or copper-free alternatives and remove it to an unmedicated tank if the display tank must be treated. The species carries pectoral spines that, though modest in size relative to larger catfish, can catch in fine-mesh nets; moving it in a container is safer. It is a peaceful, non-aggressive species by nature and will not harm tankmates it cannot swallow, but its small adult size (under 4 in SL) and shy, nocturnal temperament mean it is best kept with calm, similarly sized companions rather than boisterous or predatory fish. Provide flat rocks and ceramic caves for daytime retreats; it will rarely be seen until after dark.

This is not a catfish for a beginner: it is delicate in its water-quality demands, largely inactive by day, and offers little of the bold personality of a pleco or Synodontis. For the biotope specialist with a well-maintained, high-flow West African stream tank, however, it is a rewarding and genuinely unusual subject.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Amphilius atesuensis as Least Concern in its 2022.2 assessment. The species has a reasonably broad range across coastal West Africa — from Liberia through Guinea, Ghana, Togo and Nigeria — and is not currently considered to face imminent risk of significant population decline at range-wide scale.

Nevertheless, the rivers and streams of coastal West Africa face mounting pressure from deforestation, agricultural run-off, artisanal gold mining, and dam construction, all of which degrade the fast, clear-water habitats that rheophilic species like Amphilius atesuensis depend upon. Localised subpopulations tied to specific river systems may be more vulnerable than the Least Concern listing implies. Because the species is seldom traded, collection pressure is negligible; the relevant threats are habitat-level rather than fisheries-driven.
