Taxonomy & naming
Amphilius chalei was described by Heok Hee Ng and Ulrich Seegers, with the description credited to Seegers, 2008, as part of a revision of East African Amphiliidae. It belongs to the genus Amphilius within the family Amphiliidae, the African loach catfishes. The species epithet honours Francis M. M. Chale, a Tanzanian environmental scientist.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the standing authority for valid fish names, lists the current combination for this species as Anoplopterus chalei, reflecting a later reclassification out of Amphilius. Morphology
Amphilius chalei is a small catfish, reaching only about 3 in in standard length, well under the size most aquarium catfish attain — this is a genuinely small hillstream species, not a juvenile stand-in for something larger. Being scaleless, it should be treated as medication-sensitive in the same way as loaches, puffers and eels: dose copper-based treatments and many standard medications conservatively, often at reduced strength.
