Taxonomy & naming
Bagrus caeruleus was described by Tyson R. Roberts and Donald J. Stewart in 1976 as part of their landmark ecological and systematic survey of the fishes living in the rapids of the lower Zaire (Congo) River, published in the Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology. It belongs to the family Bagridae, the Old World bagrid catfishes, and to the genus Bagrus, a group of medium-to-large African river catfishes that includes some of the continent's most important food and sport fish.
The genus name Bagrus derives from a vernacular name long applied to large African catfishes; the species epithet caeruleus is Latin for "blue" or "bluish", chosen by Roberts & Stewart for the fish's distinctive bluish cast across the back and sides, with a darkened patch in front of the dorsal fin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Bagrus caeruleus as a valid species within Bagridae; Siluriformes classification has been extensively reshuffled over the decades, but this species has remained in Bagrus since its description.
Morphology
Bagrus caeruleus reaches a documented maximum of about 8.5 in standard length, a modest size within Bagrus compared to some of its larger congeners, but still a substantial catfish that dwarfs many aquarium tankmates. Like other bagrids it has a broad, somewhat flattened head, a robust cylindrical body, an adipose fin, and three pairs of barbels used to feel out prey and substrate in turbulent, low-visibility water. The anal fin carries 6–7 soft rays.
The skin is naked and scaleless, as in the rest of Bagridae, which has direct consequences for medicating the fish (see "In the aquarium"). True to its name, the body carries a bluish tone over the back and flanks with a darker saddle-like area just ahead of the dorsal fin. As in essentially all bagrids, the dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stiff, serrated, lockable spine — a real hazard to a hand or a net, and effective defence against predators in the wild.
Habitat
This species is a Congo River endemic, known from the rapids of the lower Zaire/Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with its type locality near the Inga hydroelectric dam and at Gombe, about 12 mi downstream of Kinshasa, in the tropical stretch between roughly 6°S and 4°S. The lower Congo rapids are among the most extreme river habitats on Earth — a system of gorges, whirlpools and standing waves carved through bedrock, with some of the highest recorded fish species diversity of any river reach, much of it locally endemic.
Bagrus caeruleus lives as a freshwater demersal fish in this fast, well-oxygenated, structurally complex environment, sheltering among rock crevices and boulders. Water in this stretch of the Congo is warm and typically soft to circumneutral, consistent with the wider lower Congo system; the cache does not provide precise pH or hardness figures for this species specifically, so aquarists should default to stable, well-oxygenated, tropical river conditions rather than extremes in either direction.
Feeding
Bagrus species are nocturnal predators, and B. caeruleus is built along the same lines: a large-mouthed catfish that ambushes or hunts down fish, crustaceans and other invertebrates it can overpower and swallow whole. In the wild, rapids-dwelling bagrids exploit the abundant small fish and invertebrate life sheltering among the rocks of the lower Congo.
In captivity this translates to a strict piscivore/predator diet: whole fish, prawn and other meaty foods, plus large sinking pellets once the fish is settled. Anything smaller than its mouth is at risk, so feeding plans and tankmate choices both have to account for this fish's appetite rather than its current size.
Mating
No wild or aquarium spawning account for Bagrus caeruleus is documented in the sources reviewed. Large bagrid catfishes in general — including well-studied congeners farmed for food across Africa — typically pair or aggregate to spawn in response to rains and rising water levels, with the male guarding a nest scraped in the substrate. There is no specific behavioural or courtship data available for this species; keepers should not expect to observe or induce natural pairing in a home aquarium given the size and specialised conditions this fish requires as an adult.
Breeding
Bagrus caeruleus is not a home-aquarium breeding project. Large bagrid catfishes of this kind are, where they are propagated at all, spawned at commercial or research scale using hormone induction (as is standard practice for African catfish aquaculture), not in a display tank. Combined with its adult size and the demanding rapids habitat it comes from, this is a species to appreciate rather than attempt to breed at home; no aquarium spawning has been reported.
In the aquarium
Treat the size trap seriously: Bagrus caeruleus reaches roughly 8.5 in SL, and small juveniles sold in the trade will grow into a fish that needs a genuinely large, long tank with powerful filtration and strong water movement to mimic its rapids origin — not a typical community aquarium. Only keep it if you can commit to that scale from the outset.
Because it is scaleless, it is medication-sensitive: dose copper-based treatments and many standard medications conservatively, often at reduced strength, as you would for loaches or other naked-skinned catfish. It also carries stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that snag in nets and can jab the handler, so move it in a container rather than netting it. As a nocturnal predator it needs solid cover (caves, rockwork) for daytime retreat and will hunt anything smaller than its mouth after dark, so tankmates must be too large to be swallowed and boisterous enough to hold their own in fast-flowing water.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bagrus caeruleus as Vulnerable, based on criterion D2 (a population that is not currently declining but is restricted enough — here, to a narrow reach of the lower Congo rapids — that a future threat could rapidly push it toward greater risk). This reflects the species' apparent restriction to the Congo's rapids habitat near Inga and Kinshasa rather than any measured decline.
The lower Congo rapids are a globally significant hotspot of narrow-range endemic fish, and this stretch of river faces real pressure from hydroelectric development, most notably the existing Inga dams and further proposed Grand Inga expansion, which threatens to alter or inundate the rapids habitat many of these endemics depend on. Because Bagrus caeruleus is known only from this small stretch of river, any large-scale change to the rapids is a direct conservation concern for the species.
