Taxonomy & naming
Bagrus degeni was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1906. It belongs to the family Bagridae, the bagrid catfishes of Africa and Asia, within the genus Bagrus — a group of African river and lake catfishes that includes some of the continent's larger predatory catfish species. The Catalog of Fishes treats Bagrus degeni as the currently valid combination; older literature on African Bagridae has at times shuffled species between genera, but this species has remained in Bagrus.
The species epithet degeni honours Edward Degen, a Swiss ornithologist (1852–1923) who collected the holotype while serving as an assistant to the ichthyologist E. A. Minchin during survey work in Uganda. As with many Lake Victoria endemics described in the early twentieth century, the type material came from expeditions cataloguing the lake's then-poorly-known fish fauna before the ecological changes of the later 1900s.
Morphology
Bagrus degeni has the classic bagrid catfish build: an elongated, scaleless body, a broad flattened head, and long barbels used to feel out prey and substrate in low light. Like other members of the genus it carries stiff, serrated spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins that can be locked erect — a defence that makes the fish awkward and potentially painful to handle or net.
Adults reach a substantial maximum size of about 21.5 in total length, placing this species firmly among the larger catfishes an aquarist might encounter in the trade as juveniles. Its naked, scaleless skin — shared with loaches, many other catfish, and puffers — makes it noticeably more sensitive to certain medications, particularly copper-based treatments, than scaled fish.
Habitat
This species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow lake shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, where it has historically been recorded from reed beds and papyrus fringes as well as open demersal (bottom-associated) habitat. Lake Victoria sits in a warm equatorial climate, with water temperatures across the system generally in the range of roughly 54–79 °F depending on depth and season, though the shallow littoral zones B. degeni favours run toward the warmer end of that range.
Lake Victoria's fish communities have undergone dramatic change since the mid-twentieth century, driven by the introduction of Nile perch, eutrophication, and heavy fishing pressure — pressures that have hit many of the lake's endemic haplochromine cichlids hardest but that also bear on other native fishes, including this species' habitat quality and prey base.
Feeding
Bagrus degeni is a nocturnal predator that feeds primarily on small fish, foraging over reed beds, papyrus margins and the lake bottom after dark. As a large-bodied piscivore it will take any fish or invertebrate small enough to swallow whole, and its diet in the wild reflects opportunistic hunting rather than a narrow prey preference.
In a hypothetical aquarium setting, feeding would need to mirror this: large meaty foods such as whole fish, prawn and sizeable sinking pellets, offered in a way that respects its size and nocturnal habits. Any tankmates would need to be far too large for it to swallow, since this species does not distinguish between decorative fish and food.
Mating
Specific field data on the courtship and spawning behaviour of Bagrus degeni is sparse. As with other large commercially important Bagrus species, reproduction in the wild is presumed to follow the general bagrid pattern of seasonal spawning tied to lake conditions, but detailed observations for this particular species are not well documented in the available literature.
Breeding
Bagrus degeni grows to roughly 21.5 in and has long been part of the Lake Victoria commercial fishery, which places it firmly in the category of large, commercially significant catfishes that are essentially not bred in home aquaria. Where large Bagrus species are propagated at all, it is typically through farm-scale or hormone-induced spawning aimed at food-fish production rather than anything achievable in a home fishroom.
There is no record of this species being bred by hobbyists, and given its adult size and predatory habits it is not a realistic aquarium-breeding candidate. Anyone encountering juveniles in the trade should understand this is a wild-caught or regionally sourced food-fish species, not an aquarium strain.
In the aquarium
Bagrus degeni is not a practical aquarium fish for the overwhelming majority of keepers. At a maximum size of around 21.5 in total length, it is a size-trap species: juveniles sold small will eventually require pond-sized or public-aquarium-scale accommodation that no ordinary home tank can provide. Anyone considering this species must plan for its true adult size from day one, not the size it arrives at.
If ever kept, its scaleless skin calls for conservative dosing of copper and many other medications, as with other naked-skinned catfish. It carries stiff, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can snag a net and jab the handler, so any necessary handling should use a container rather than a net. It is nocturnal and predatory, meaning tankmates must be far too large to be eaten and the fish will do best with cover to retreat to during the day. In practice, this species belongs in large aquaculture or research settings rather than the hobby.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List currently lists Bagrus degeni as Data Deficient, reflecting a lack of recent, thorough population assessment rather than evidence that the species is secure. As a Lake Victoria endemic, it shares the lake's broader conservation story: the introduction of Nile perch, water quality decline, and fishing pressure have reshaped the lake's fish community since the mid-twentieth century, and native species outside the well-studied haplochromine cichlid flock — including catfishes like B. degeni — have received comparatively little targeted monitoring.
Given its historical importance to the Lake Victoria fishery, ongoing harvest pressure is a plausible concern even without a full quantitative assessment. Its status is one to watch rather than one that can currently be called safe.
