Taxonomy & naming
Bagrus docmak was described by the Swedish-Finnish naturalist Peter Forsskål in 1775, based on material from the Nile system, making it one of the earliest-named African catfishes. It belongs to the family Bagridae, the Old World bagrid catfishes, and to the genus Bagrus, a group of large-bodied African river and lake catfishes that also includes species such as Bagrus bajad and Bagrus meridionalis. The Catalog of Fishes treats Bagrus docmak as the valid combination; like much of Siluriformes, older literature sometimes places bagrid species under superseded generic names, but Bagrus is the name in current use and the one retained here.
The common name "semutundu" is used around Lake Victoria and other East African fisheries, and the species is also widely known as the two-spot catfish, referencing the pale spots at the base of the dorsal and adipose fins seen in some populations. The genus name Bagrus is an old Arabic-derived term historically applied to large Nile catfishes; the epithet docmak likewise derives from a regional vernacular name rather than a Latin or Greek description of the fish's appearance.
Morphology
Bagrus docmak has the classic bagrid silhouette: a broad, somewhat flattened head, a long, cylindrical body tapering toward a forked tail, and four pairs of long barbels used to probe the substrate and locate prey in low light or murky water. The skin is entirely scaleless, typical of catfishes, and the body colour is a plain silvery-grey to olive-brown above, paling to white on the belly, sometimes with faint pale spots near the dorsal and adipose fin bases.
The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stout, serrated spine that locks rigidly erect when the fish is alarmed or handled — a genuine hazard to the hands of anyone netting it, and a reason to move this species in a container rather than a net. FishBase documents a maximum size of 50 in total length, an adult size that puts this species well beyond what any standard home aquarium can accommodate; wild population samples from Lake Victoria show typical adult sizes in the 4.5–21.5 in range with weights up to roughly 1.65 kg, but the largest individuals in less-fished waters reach far larger.
Habitat
The species has an unusually broad distribution across sub-Saharan Africa. FishBase records it from the Chad, Niger, Volta, Senegal, Mono, Ouémé, Cross and Sanaga river basins, and from the Rift Valley lakes Edward, George, Albert, Victoria and Tanganyika, making it one of the more widely spread large African bagrids rather than a single-lake endemic. It occupies the open waters and littoral zones of these rivers and lakes, typically over sand, mud or rocky bottoms where it can forage after dark.
Across this range water chemistry varies with the basin, but Bagrus docmak is generally recorded from warm, moderately hard, near-neutral-to-slightly-alkaline water rather than the soft, acidic blackwater associated with some other African catfish groups. A commonly cited husbandry range is roughly 70–77 °F with pH 6.5–8.0, reflecting the moderate, stable conditions of the large rivers and Rift lakes it inhabits.
Feeding
Bagrus docmak is a piscivorous, opportunistic nocturnal predator. It hunts primarily by scent and touch using its long barbels, taking fish, crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic insects, along with some plant and detrital material when animal prey is scarce — an omnivorous streak on top of a fundamentally predatory diet. In its native lakes it is an important predator within the fish community and, in turn, an important food fish for local fisheries.
In captivity it accepts whole fish, prawn, mussel and other large meaty foods along with sinking pellets, and it feeds most actively after lights-out. Any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth should be assumed to be food rather than company — this is a large predator, not a peaceful bottom-dweller, and stocking must be planned around that fact from the start.
Mating
Reproductive studies from Lake Chamo in Ethiopia found that Bagrus docmak spawns over an extended season from February to August, with a peak around May, and reaches sexual maturity at roughly 24.5 in total length in males and 27 in in females — sizes that themselves make clear how large this species must grow before it can breed at all. Fecundity is high, with a mean of around 276,500 eggs per mature female, typical of a large river and lake predator investing in numerous, comparatively unguarded offspring rather than a small number of intensively parented young.
Studies from the Victoria Nile similarly describe an extended spawning season with nest-building behaviour, and the ScotCat factsheet notes that males build spawning pits and guard the resulting fry — a form of substrate-pit spawning with paternal care rather than open-water scattering. None of this reproductive behaviour, however, has translated into home-aquarium breeding, for reasons rooted entirely in the fish's adult size.
Breeding
Bagrus docmak is not bred in the home aquarium, and realistically cannot be: with maturity reached only at 24.5–27 in total length and a maximum recorded size of 50 in, no hobbyist tank can house even one mature adult of this species, let alone a compatible pair with the pit-digging territory the wild fish requires. Any commercial or research propagation of large bagrids like this one relies on pond culture or hormone-induced spawning of broodstock held in dedicated facilities, not aquarium conditions.
What is documented is exclusively wild reproductive biology: seasonal spawning pits dug and guarded by the male, an extended February–August season peaking in May (per the Lake Chamo study), and very high fecundity typical of a large predatory catfish. Aquarists should treat this species as one that is observed and appreciated, not one that will ever be paired up and spawned in a home fishroom.
In the aquarium
This is a genuine size-trap species. Juveniles occasionally offered in the trade are a few centimetres of unremarkable silvery catfish, but Bagrus docmak grows to a documented maximum of 50 in total length and reaches sexual maturity only once it is well over half a metre long. No home aquarium — nothing short of an enormous pond, a public aquarium exhibit, or a very large aquaculture system — can responsibly house an adult. Anyone offered a juvenile should ask what the long-term plan for a metre-plus predatory catfish is before buying.
For the rare keeper with genuinely large-scale facilities, water should sit around 70–77 °F at pH 6.5–8.0, with a soft or sandy substrate and no fixtures small enough to be swallowed — this fish will eat any tankmate it can fit in its mouth. Like other catfish, its skin is entirely scaleless and unusually sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments, so any dosing should be conservative and ideally half the labelled rate. Its dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigidly and are sharp enough to injure the keeper or tear a net, so this species should always be moved in a container, never scooped. It is strictly nocturnal and appreciates heavy cover and low light during the day.
Conservation
Bagrus docmak has not been comprehensively reassessed on the IUCN Red List under current criteria, and no verified status or year could be confirmed from the cached sources for this article; the species should be treated as unevaluated (Not Evaluated) pending a proper current assessment rather than assigned a status here.
The ScotCat factsheet notes that East African populations, including those in Lake Victoria, face pressure from fishing intensity, competition and predation from introduced Nile perch, dam construction and pollution, while West and Central African populations are affected by fishing pressure and broader habitat and climate degradation. As a wide-ranging species spread across many major river basins and Rift Valley lakes, Bagrus docmak is unlikely to be at imminent risk of extinction range-wide, but specific lake and river populations — particularly in Lake Victoria — are under documented ecological pressure.
