Taxonomy & naming
Bagrus filamentosus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1924. It belongs to the family Bagridae, the Old World bagrid catfishes, within the genus Bagrus, a group of predominantly African river catfishes ranging from around 12 in up to well over a metre in some species. The Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name, and Bagrus filamentosus stands as currently accepted within Bagrus; older literature discussing African bagrids sometimes used different generic placements for related species, but this account keeps the genus as Bagrus throughout.
The genus name Bagrus derives from an old vernacular term for large river catfishes; the species epithet filamentosus is Latin, meaning "filamentous" or "thread-bearing", a direct reference to the drawn-out, thread-like extensions of the dorsal fin rays that distinguish this species from its more thickset relatives.
Morphology
Bagrus filamentosus has the classic bagrid silhouette: an elongated, moderately compressed body, a broad depressed head, and long barbels used to detect prey in murky or low-light water. Compared with the largest members of the genus it is relatively slender and lightly built, but it still reaches a substantial adult size of about 27 in total length and around 2.1 kg — a genuine size-trap species often sold as an innocuous few-centimetre juvenile that quickly outgrows any ordinary tank.
The most distinctive feature, and the source of its name, is the elongated, filamentous extension of the dorsal fin rays. Like other Bagridae, it carries stiff, serrated, locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins — these can lock rigid, tangle in a net, and jab a careless handler, so this fish should always be moved in a container rather than netted. Its skin is scaleless (naked), a trait shared across catfishes generally, which has direct consequences for medicating it (see "In the aquarium").
Habitat
This species is native to the River Niger system of West Africa, recorded from Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria. It inhabits the main channels and associated waters of this large river system rather than isolated lakes, living as a bottom- and mid-water predator over the Niger's warm, flowing habitats.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to wild populations is sparse, but aquarium-keeping sources give a working range of roughly 73–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5, consistent with a warm, soft-to-neutral West African river fish. This is not a rift-lake or blackwater species; it should not be assumed to need either the hard alkaline water of the East African lakes or the very soft, acidic conditions of Amazonian blackwater — treat the moderate figures above as the working target absent more specific data.
Feeding
Bagrus filamentosus is a piscivorous predator. In the wild it hunts other fish and any invertebrates it can overpower, using its barbels to locate prey after dark. Essentially any fish that fits inside its mouth is at risk, and this trait carries over directly into the aquarium.
In captivity it takes large meaty foods readily: whole fish, prawn and other seafood, and sinking carnivore pellets or frozen fish fillets. Tankmates must be chosen with real care — anything small enough to be swallowed eventually will be, regardless of how peaceful the fish otherwise seems toward larger companions.
Mating
There is no documented account of natural courtship or spawning behaviour for Bagrus filamentosus in the aquarium literature, and nothing in the available sources describes pair formation, nesting, or spawning triggers for this species. As with many large commercially important bagrids, whatever reproductive behaviour occurs in the wild Niger system has not been meaningfully observed or recorded by aquarists.
What is clear is that this is not a fish whose reproduction plays out in home tanks: its adult size alone puts natural courtship and spawning well outside what a typical aquarium can accommodate, and no hobbyist breeding reports exist to describe it.
Breeding
Bagrus filamentosus is not bred in the home aquarium. Like other large, commercially significant Bagridae, any captive reproduction of this genus in Africa is typically achieved at a farm scale using hormone-induced spawning for food-fish or stocking purposes, not through natural pairing in a display tank. No aquarium-breeding reports exist for this species.
Given its adult size of roughly 27 in and 2 kg, this is unsurprising — the fish simply outgrows any tank in which a hobbyist could realistically attempt to condition and spawn a pair long before maturity would be reached. Anyone encountering claims of home-bred B. filamentosus should treat them with scepticism; the honest picture is that this species' reproduction, where it happens at all in captivity, is a commercial hatchery operation, not a hobby one.
In the aquarium
Bagrus filamentosus is not a fish for the ordinary home aquarium. At an adult size of roughly 27 in total length and over 2 kg, it needs an enormous, pond-scale system — the kind of setup found in public aquariums or dedicated large-fish keepers, not a typical living-room tank. Anyone buying a small juvenile should understand exactly what it will become and have the facility ready before purchase; this is the size trap that catches keepers of many Bagrus species.
Because it is scaleless, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to some other treatments — dose conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, as with loaches, puffers and eels. It also carries stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can tangle in a net and injure the handler, so always move it in a container rather than netting it. As a nocturnal predator it appreciates dim lighting and solid cover to retreat into during the day, and being piscivorous, it must only be kept with tankmates too large to be swallowed — which, given its own size, rules out nearly everything except other large, robust fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List lists Bagrus filamentosus as Data Deficient, meaning there is not enough information available to assess its extinction risk with confidence. This is a common status for less-studied African river catfishes that lack dedicated population surveys, even where the species itself is not considered rare within its known range.
Its distribution is tied to the River Niger system across Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria, a river facing pressures from damming, water abstraction, sedimentation and fishing across its length. Without a formal population assessment it is not possible to say how these pressures affect B. filamentosus specifically, but its fate is bound to the health of the Niger system as a whole.
