Taxonomy & naming
Bagrus melas was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1846. It belongs to the genus Bagrus and the family Bagridae, the naked (scaleless) catfishes of Africa and Asia, though the African genus Bagrus itself is now more often grouped with the Claroteidae in modern classifications. Genus-level and family-level placement of African bagrid-type catfishes has shifted repeatedly as the group has been revised, so older literature may file this species under different family names; the genus Bagrus itself is retained here.
The species epithet melas is Greek for "black", most likely referring to a dark body coloration relative to congeners. Documented English-language sources on Bagrus melas specifically are limited — it does not have an established common name in the aquarium trade, and much of what can be said about its biology is extrapolated from the wider genus Bagrus rather than confirmed for this species alone.
Morphology
Like other members of Bagrus, B. melas has the classic bagrid-catfish build: a broad, somewhat flattened head, long barbels around the mouth, an adipose fin, and stiff, serrated spines locking at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins. The skin is scaleless (naked), a trait shared across the genus and the wider family.
A confirmed maximum length for B. melas specifically could not be verified from available sources. Species in genus Bagrus range broadly from around 12 in up to more than a metre total length, and several well-documented congeners (such as B. docmak and B. bajad) reach 31.5 in to over a metre. Prospective keepers should treat this species as a potentially large predatory catfish rather than assume a modest size, and should not rely on the size of a juvenile specimen as a guide to its adult dimensions.
Habitat
Bagrus melas is native to African freshwater systems, consistent with the wider distribution of the genus Bagrus across the continent's major river basins and lakes. Specific river systems, coordinates and water chemistry for this species were not confirmed in available sources.
As a rule, African Bagrus species inhabit warm tropical rivers and lake margins with moderate to soft, circumneutral water rather than the extreme soft, acidic blackwater conditions seen in South America or Southeast Asia. Without species-specific data, keepers should provide stable, warm, well-oxygenated water and avoid assuming this fish needs unusual chemistry.
Feeding
Bagrus catfishes are nocturnal predators that take live and dead animal prey — fish, invertebrates, and anything else they can overpower and swallow. B. melas can be assumed to follow the same pattern as its genus: an opportunistic piscivore rather than an omnivore or grazer.
In captivity, large Bagrus species are typically fed whole fish, prawn, and other meaty foods, along with sinking pellets once acclimated. Any tankmates must be too large to be swallowed whole, since a hungry Bagrus will treat smaller fish as food rather than company.
Mating
No species-specific account of courtship or spawning behaviour for Bagrus melas was found in available sources. Large commercially significant Bagrus species are known to be induced to spawn using hormone injection at fish farms and hatcheries rather than pairing and spawning spontaneously in captivity, and there is no reason to expect B. melas to differ from this general pattern for the genus.
Breeding
As with other large Bagrus and bagrid catfishes, Bagrus melas should be assumed to reproduce the way its farmed relatives do: through hormone-induced spawning at commercial scale, not through natural pairing in a home aquarium. It grows too large for most tanks to accommodate a breeding pair, and there are no documented reports of it being bred by hobbyists.
Aquarists should not expect to breed this species at home. Anyone encountering juvenile B. melas in the trade should assume it originates from wild collection or commercial hatchery production rather than hobbyist breeding.
In the aquarium
Bagrus melas is not a species for the ordinary home aquarium. Its genus includes fish that grow from 12 in to well over a metre, and even without a confirmed maximum length for this exact species, any Bagrus offered small and inexpensive as a juvenile should be treated as a size trap: it will keep growing and can quickly outstrip a standard tank, ending up needing pond-scale or public-aquarium accommodation.
Like other bagrid catfishes it is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively if treatment is needed. It also carries stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that can snag a net and jab the handler; move it in a container rather than netting it. As a nocturnal predator it needs cover to retreat to during the day and will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be robust, similarly large fish. Given the uncertainty around its adult size, this species is best left to very large systems or avoided by home aquarists altogether.
Conservation
Bagrus melas has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List (Not Evaluated), reflecting how little documented attention this species has received relative to better-known Bagrus catfishes. Its conservation status, population trend, and the specific pressures on its native waters are effectively unknown from available sources.
Given the data gap, no specific conservation claims can be made beyond noting that many single-region or poorly studied African catfishes in this genus remain unassessed, and that any wild collection for the trade would be occurring without a baseline population assessment to weigh it against.
