Bagrus rhodopterygius was named by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1846, placing it in the African bagrid catfish genus Bagrus (family Bagridae). Historical ichthyological catalogues — including a nineteenth-century reference by Francis Day from 1877 — list the name, but it is marked as taxonomically questionable, and no modern revision has confirmed it as a distinct, valid species. It may be a nomen dubium (a name that cannot be reliably applied to a known animal) or a junior synonym of one of the other, better-documented Bagrus species such as B. bajad, B. docmak or B. filamentosus.
