Taxonomy & naming
Centromochlus megalops was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858 and is the type species of the genus Centromochlus, designated by Bleeker in 1862. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, within the order Siluriformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Centromochlus as the valid genus for this species.
As with much of Siluriformes, nineteenth-century catfish taxonomy saw considerable genus-shuffling across the family, and older literature on Auchenipteridae members can carry different generic combinations; C. megalops itself has kept its original genus, and Centromochlus is the name used here and on the Catalog of Fishes. The genus contains a number of small, similarly built driftwood-dwelling species from Amazonian and Guianan drainages.
Morphology
Centromochlus megalops has not had its maximum size documented in the sources consulted for this profile, but the genus Centromochlus is generally made up of small catfishes, typically well under 4 in standard length.
