Taxonomy & naming
Centromochlus heckelii was described by the Italian zoologist Filippo De Filippi in 1853. The type locality is the Marañón River, a major headwater of the Amazon in northern Peru, with records extending across the broader Amazon and Orinoco river basins. It belongs to the family Auchenipteridae — the driftwood catfishes — and the genus Centromochlus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats as the valid combination for this species.
The epithet heckelii honours the Austrian ichthyologist Johann Jakob Heckel (1790–1857), a pioneer describer of South American fishes. Within Auchenipteridae, Centromochlus sits among the smaller-bodied species sometimes called "toothless driftwood catfishes"; older literature occasionally placed them under allied genera or lumped them with broader auchenipterid assemblages, but the genus Centromochlus has been stable in modern revisions.
Morphology
Centromochlus heckelii reaches about 5.5 in total length. The body is elongate and robust toward the front, tapering to a forked tail. The head is broad and somewhat flattened, bearing three pairs of barbels — one long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs. Large eyes are a conspicuous feature, reflecting the species' nocturnal lifestyle.
The pectoral fins are notably broad and are each armed with a stiff, serrated spine that locks erect when the fish is startled or handled; the dorsal fin likewise carries a stout locking spine. These spines are venomous and penetrate easily — injuries are painful and infections are possible. Like all auchenipterids the skin is entirely scaleless and naked, which has direct implications for medication sensitivity. Coloration is variable but typically a mottled brown or grey, providing camouflage against bark and leaf litter.
Habitat
Centromochlus heckelii inhabits the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America. The type locality is the Marañón River in Peru, and the species ranges across lowland rivers and tributaries in soft, warm, slightly acidic to neutral waters characteristic of Amazonian flood-plain systems.
In the wild it rests among submerged wood, bark, roots and leaf litter by day, becoming active after dark. It tolerates water in the range of 79–82 °F and a pH of roughly 6.5–7.5 (ScotCat), consistent with the tannin-stained, soft-to-moderately-hard waters of its lowland river habitat. It is not a fast-water or hard-water fish, and rift-lake or temperate conditions do not apply.
Feeding
In nature Centromochlus heckelii is a micro-predator and benthic omnivore, taking small invertebrates and crustaceans that it finds along the river bottom after dark (ScotCat). The large eyes are well adapted to low-light foraging.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to commercial foods. Frozen bloodworm, white worm, frozen or fresh shrimp and prawns are all accepted, as are sinking catfish tablets. Because the fish is nocturnal and spends the day hidden, feeding after lights-out is strongly advisable — it will otherwise be out-competed by diurnal tankmates and may not get an adequate ration.
Mating
Auchenipterid catfishes are exceptional among Siluriformes in using internal fertilisation. In Centromochlus and its close relatives, the male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ capable of transferring sperm directly into the female during a brief mating encounter. The female then stores the sperm internally for an extended period — sometimes weeks — before laying a clutch of fertilised eggs, often long after the male is no longer present.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle but consistent: males possess curved maxillary barbels, while those of females are straight (ScotCat; Aquarium Glaser). This barbel difference is the most reliable external character for sexing the species outside the breeding season.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Centromochlus heckelii is not well documented in the aquarium literature; the cache sources note breeding mode as "not reported" in detail. Like other auchenipterids, the internal-fertilisation mechanism means that a female may deposit fertile eggs independently of the male — a keeper who has housed a mixed group may find eggs without having witnessed a mating event.
Where driftwood catfishes in allied genera have been bred, soft, warm, slightly acidic water with ample cave and crevice spawning sites has been key. Parental care after laying is apparently absent or minimal in Auchenipteridae generally. Given the limited breeding data for this species specifically, hobbyists should consider successful reproduction a bonus rather than a routine outcome and focus first on conditioning adults with varied live and frozen foods.
In the aquarium
A tank of at least 20–25 US gal is appropriate for Centromochlus heckelii, reflecting its adult size of around 5.5 in. The aquarium should be furnished with plenty of hiding places — driftwood, hollow logs, PVC tubes or stacked slate — as the fish spends most of the day concealed and becomes active and confident only after dark. Subdued lighting and a dark substrate encourage natural behaviour.
Two care points are non-negotiable. First, this is a scaleless, naked-skinned catfish: it is significantly more sensitive to copper-based medications and many other treatments than scaled fish, and conservative dosing (often half the standard dose) is advised. Second, the locking, serrated, venomous pectoral and dorsal spines tangle badly in a net and can inflict a painful, venomous jab — always move the fish in a cup or container, never a net.
Water should be soft to moderately hard and near neutral to slightly acidic (pH 6.5–7.5) at 79–82 °F. It is peaceful toward tankmates it cannot swallow and is a good citizen in a South American community of similar-sized fish. A small group is more natural than a singleton. Feed after lights-out with sinking foods for reliable results.
Conservation
Centromochlus heckelii has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No formal conservation evaluation has been published for this species.
Its range spans large, relatively undisturbed river systems of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, and it is not among the top-priority species for conservation concern in those regions. However, as a fish associated with intact riverine habitat — submerged wood and sheltered, clean-watered reaches — it is likely sensitive to the deforestation, sedimentation and water-quality degradation affecting lowland Amazonian rivers. Wild collection feeds at least part of the aquarium trade, since captive breeding is infrequent; sustainable sourcing therefore remains relevant for the hobby.
