Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis angolensis was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967, from material collected in Angola. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — and to the genus Chiloglanis, a group of small, sucker-mouthed rheophilic catfishes found across sub-Saharan Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Chiloglanis angolensis as a valid species and the authority for the current classification.
The genus name Chiloglanis combines Greek roots referencing the lip and the catfish form, describing the enlarged, sucker-like oral disc that defines the genus. The species epithet angolensis is a straightforward Latin geographic name, "of Angola", marking the country where the type material was taken. As with many small Chiloglanis described from limited African material, the species has stayed narrowly known since its description, with little revision or additional collecting reported in the literature reviewed here.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small catfish: FishBase records a maximum size of only 2 in standard length, among the smallest members of an already small-bodied genus. Like other Chiloglanis it has the sucker-mouth typical of the genus — a flattened, disc-like oral apparatus on the underside of the head that lets it cling to rock faces in fast water, the same functional design (though not the same lineage) as the hillstream loaches and some plecos that occupy similar torrent habitats elsewhere in the world.
The skin is naked and scaleless, as in all mochokids, which has direct consequences for medicating the species (see "In the aquarium"). Chiloglanis species typically carry the family's stiff, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines, which lock erect and can snag a net or jab a careless hand; small size does not make these harmless. The genus shows sexual dimorphism in some species, with males developing elongate anal and caudal fin extensions, though this has not been specifically documented for C. angolensis in the sources reviewed here.
Habitat
Chiloglanis angolensis is endemic to Angola, recorded from the Cuango River drainage and the Rio Coroca. The type locality is a gallery-forest stream on the road between Chibia and Jau, near Sá da Bandeira (present-day Lubango) — the kind of small, shaded, flowing watercourse typical for the genus rather than a large open river.
Chiloglanis species are rheophiles, adapted to clinging to rock and cobble in current rather than living over soft substrate or in still water; their sucker mouths are a current-adapted feature, not a decorative one. Specific water chemistry data for this species were not located in the sources reviewed here, so keepers should not assume soft, acidic blackwater conditions by default — Angolan highland streams vary, and any aquarium attempt should aim to replicate cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than a still tropical community setup.
Feeding
Mochokid catfishes as a family are nocturnal benthic omnivores and micro-predators, foraging the bottom mainly after dark for invertebrates and detritus, and the closely related, better-documented Chiloglanis polypogon is reported to take a mixed diet of live and frozen foods (daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm) alongside algae wafers and greenstuff such as cucumber. It is reasonable to expect C. angolensis to feed similarly, but this has not been confirmed for the species itself in the sources reviewed here.
In a rheophilic species like this, natural foraging likely also includes grazing biofilm and algae from rock surfaces in current, a habit shared with many suckermouth stream specialists. Any aquarium feeding regime should offer food after lights-out and should not rely on the fish competing at the surface, since its whole body plan is built for clinging and grazing in flow rather than active mid-water foraging.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning behaviour for Chiloglanis angolensis was located in the sources reviewed here. Small rheophilic mochokids of this kind are generally understood to be substrate or cavity spawners in fast-flowing water, but this is a family-level generalisation, not a documented account of this species, and it should be read as such.
Breeding
There is no confirmed record of Chiloglanis angolensis being bred in the aquarium in the sources reviewed here, and the wider genus is not known for regular home breeding. This is consistent with the pattern across most Synodontis and Chiloglanis outside a handful of well-studied species — small, poorly collected rheophilic catfishes from narrow African ranges are rarely if ever propagated in captivity, and this species should be treated as effectively unbred in the hobby rather than assigned a breeding method it has not been shown to use.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis angolensis stays genuinely small — to about 2 in SL — so it does not present the size trap that catches keepers of larger catfish, but that does not make it an easy or even readily available aquarium fish. It is a rheophile: in nature it clings to rock in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated gallery-forest streams, and a tank without strong current, high dissolved oxygen and hard surfaces to graze would not replicate the conditions it needs to thrive. It is essentially unreported and untested in the hobby trade, and this profile should not be read as encouragement to seek out or import wild-collected stock from a Data Deficient, narrow-range endemic.
Like all mochokids it is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively if treatment is ever needed. It also carries the family's locking, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines, which can snag in a net — move it in a container rather than netting it. Being a small nocturnal benthic species, it would need cover and a substrate/rockwork it can graze and hide among during the day.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis angolensis as Data Deficient. The species is known only from a narrow range in Angola — the Cuango River drainage and the Rio Coroca — and the limited collecting history typical of small Angolan stream endemics means there is not enough data to assign a threat category with confidence.
As with many single-country, single-drainage African catfishes, the real conservation picture depends on the condition of those specific gallery-forest streams — deforestation, water abstraction and sedimentation are the generic pressures on this kind of habitat across Angola, though no species-specific assessment of these threats was located in the sources reviewed here. There is no evidence of a meaningful aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure does not appear to be a relevant factor.
