Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis asymetricaudalis was described by Luc De Vos in 1993. It belongs to the family Mochokidae — the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes — in the genus Chiloglanis, a large group of small, sucker-mouthed rapids catfishes found across tropical Africa. The Catalog of Fishes and Catalogue of Life both treat Chiloglanis asymetricaudalis as a valid species.
The genus name Chiloglanis combines Greek roots referring to the lip and to catfish, alluding to the fleshy, sucker-like oral disc that defines the genus. The species epithet asymetricaudalis is a Latinised coinage meaning "asymmetrical-tailed", describing the caudal fin's uneven lobes — the diagnostic feature De Vos used to separate this species from its many superficially similar rapids-dwelling relatives in the same river systems.
Morphology
Chiloglanis asymetricaudalis is a small catfish, reaching only about 3 in standard length, in keeping with the diminutive size typical of the genus. As in other Chiloglanis, the mouth is modified into a ventral, disc-like sucker rimmed with papillae, used to grip rock surfaces against strong current rather than for suction feeding in the mammalian sense.
The feature that gives the species its name is its tail: the caudal fin is distinctly asymmetrical, with the upper (superior) lobe noticeably more developed than the lower (inferior) lobe — unlike the more evenly forked tails of many congeners. Like other mochokids the skin is scaleless, and the fish carries the family's typical stiff, serrated pectoral spine, which locks in place and can jab an incautious hand or snag a net.
Habitat
This species is confined to the Rusizi (Ruzizi) River basin, which drains from Lake Kivu into Lake Tanganyika through Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, plus the separate Luiche River drainage entering Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. It is a rapids specialist, living on rocky and sandy-rocky substrates in fast-flowing river current — the classic Chiloglanis niche of clinging to stone in torrents where few other fish can hold position.
