Glyptothorax lampris is a small sisorid torrent catfish described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1934, native to fast-flowing Asian streams where its flattened body and adhesive thoracic apparatus allow it to cling to rock surfaces against strong current. It belongs to the family Sisoridae, the torrent catfishes of Asia, a group characterised by a strongly flattened underside and a specialised thoracic adhesive apparatus that lets the fish maintain position in fast-flowing water. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Glyptothorax lampris as the valid name; no synonyms are currently listed in the literature consulted.

The genus Glyptothorax is large, encompassing well over a hundred recognised species across South and Southeast Asia, and many members remain poorly documented in the scientific and aquarium literature. The epithet lampris is from the Greek lampros, meaning 'bright' or 'brilliant', likely a reference to colouration or scale lustre noted by Fowler at description, though the original description data are sparse in accessible secondary sources.

Morphology

Glyptothorax lampris has the characteristic sisorid body plan: a strongly depressed, broad head and flattened anterior body, with the underside bearing a textured thoracic adhesive apparatus — a ridged, fleshy patch used to grip the substrate in fast water. The body tapers toward a forked or slightly emarginate caudal fin. Three pairs of barbels are present: a maxillary pair and two mandibular pairs, all used for sensory contact with the substrate.

The skin is entirely scaleless (naked), which is a defining sisorid feature and has direct implications for medication sensitivity. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated, locking spines typical of the catfish order. Adult size in the genus Glyptothorax generally falls in the range of 4–6 in total length; specific published size data for G. lampris are limited, and keepers should allow for the upper end of the genus range when sizing a tank.

Habitat

Sisoridae as a family are hill-stream and torrent specialists of South and Southeast Asia, found in the fast-flowing, well-oxygenated reaches of rivers and streams in montane and foothill zones. Glyptothorax lampris fits this pattern: it inhabits rocky riverbeds where the current is strong, clinging to stones and boulders with its thoracic apparatus in conditions that would dislodge most other fish.

Water in such environments is typically cool to warm (depending on altitude and latitude), clear, well-oxygenated, and often soft to moderately hard with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. This is not a blackwater species: the water is actively moving and oxygen-saturated rather than still and tannin-stained. The specific drainage or country of origin for G. lampris is not confirmed in accessible sources; further locality data would be needed to pin down the native range precisely.

Feeding

Glyptothorax, like other sisorids, are benthic omnivores and micro-predators, grazing the surfaces of rocks and the riverbed for aquatic invertebrates, biofilm, small crustaceans and organic detritus. Feeding occurs mostly at dusk and after dark, when the fish are most active.

In the aquarium, sinking pellets and wafers (especially algae-based and carnivore sinking pellets), frozen bloodworm, small frozen crustaceans, and prepared foods offered near the bottom are all suitable. Because this is a nocturnal forager, feeding after lights-out reduces competition from diurnal tankmates and ensures the catfish obtains adequate nutrition.

Mating

No mating or spawning observations for Glyptothorax lampris are recorded in the accessible aquarium or scientific literature. The species is not encountered in the ornamental trade with any frequency, and no accounts of captive pairing or spawning behaviour have been documented.

By analogy with other sisorids, courtship likely involves substrate-related behaviour in fast-water conditions that are difficult to replicate in the home aquarium. External sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been described for this species.

Breeding

Glyptothorax lampris has not been bred in captivity in any documented account. Sisoridae breeding biology is poorly studied generally, and the few records that exist suggest that the torrent conditions these fish require — high current, well-oxygenated cold water, specific substrate — are difficult to reproduce at home aquarium scale.

The breeding mode is not confirmed from the available data. Unlike armoured callichthyids (which build bubble-nests) or auchenipterids (which use internal fertilisation), no specialised strategy has been assigned to Glyptothorax in accessible sources. In the aquarium

Glyptothorax lampris is an uncommon fish in the hobby and is best suited to a specialist set-up that replicates the torrent conditions of its native Asian streams. A tank with strong, directional current (a powerhead or wavemaker), high oxygen levels, smooth and angular rockwork for the fish to cling to, and a sandy or fine-gravel bottom is far more appropriate than a standard still-water community aquarium.

Two care points are mandatory for this species. First, as a member of Sisoridae it is entirely scaleless, making it significantly more sensitive to copper-based treatments and many medications than scaled fish — use half-doses or copper-free alternatives and observe closely for adverse reactions. Second, the pectoral and dorsal spines lock erect and are sharply serrated; never use a net to move this fish, as the spines will tangle in the mesh and injure both fish and keeper. Move it in a container or a soft bag instead. Adult size should be expected in the 4–6 in range typical for the genus; plan tank volume accordingly. Feed after lights-out for best results.

Conservation

Glyptothorax lampris has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. No conservation data are currently available. Many species in the large genus Glyptothorax are similarly under-assessed, particularly those known only from restricted drainages in South or Southeast Asia.
