Taxonomy & naming
Glyptothorax trilineatus was described by the English naturalist Edward Blyth in 1860, with the type locality given as Tenasserim — the narrow southern strip of what is now Myanmar, draining to the Sittang and Salween systems. The species belongs to the family Sisoridae, the Asian hillstream and torrent catfishes, a clade of benthic, fast-water specialists found from the Himalayan foothills east through mainland Southeast Asia and south into the Western Ghats. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Glyptothorax trilineatus as the valid name.
The genus Glyptothorax is large and richly diversified across Asian hill-country rivers, with dozens of described species that share the characteristic thoracic adhesive apparatus. Historical accounts may have placed members of this genus under other names or different torrent-catfish genera; the Catalog of Fishes is the current authority on the valid combination. The epithet trilineatus, Latin for 'three-lined', refers to the three pale stripes that mark the fish: a broad white mid-dorsal stripe running from head to caudal base, and a narrow whitish axial stripe on each flank — markings that make the species identifiable in its subfamily.
Morphology
Like all sisorids, Glyptothorax trilineatus has a flattened, streamlined body adapted for life on the substrate in fast water. The head is broad and depressed, the snout spatulate, and the undersurface of the chest bears the genus's hallmark adhesive apparatus — paired longitudinal ridges and grooves running roughly parallel to the body axis, which together act as a friction-grip device in current. Short barbels around the mouth probe the substrate for food.
The ground colour is dark — near-black to deep brown — overlaid with the three diagnostic pale markings: one white stripe along the mid-dorsal line from nape to caudal fin, and one narrow whitish lateral stripe on each side. This high-contrast pattern likely provides disruptive camouflage against the mottled rock and shadow of boulder-strewn stream beds. Like all catfish of this family, the skin is entirely scaleless (naked), which has practical consequences for medication. Stiff pectoral spines are present; they can lock erect and may tangle badly in a net.
FishBase records a maximum size of 12 in TL for male or unsexed specimens; PlanetCatfish places practical size closer to 10 in. This is not a small fish by hillstream standards — adults can reach 10–12 in total length, substantially larger than the typical torrent catfish sold as a juvenile.
Habitat
Glyptothorax trilineatus is a pool-and-riffle catfish of mountain and foothill rivers. Its native range spans a wide arc: from the Tenasserim and Sittang drainages of Myanmar westward into Assam and Arunachal Pradesh (India) and Nepal, and eastward through Thailand and Laos in the tributaries of the lower Mekong basin. It occupies fast-flowing, highly oxygenated sections — riffles, waterfalls, boulder runs — where current is sufficient for its adhesive thoracic apparatus to function as intended.
Critically, this is a cool-water species. PlanetCatfish data places the temperature range at 50–68 °F (47–67 °F), and FishBase confirms the preference for cool, rapid-running water. This is fundamentally not a warm tropical catfish: the upper Mekong tributaries and the Himalayan foothills it inhabits receive cold snowmelt and rain-fed current well below the 75–82 °F of a typical tropical community tank. Water chemistry runs mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.2), moderately soft to moderate hardness, with dissolved oxygen at saturation — the kind of water only an efficient power-head and surface agitation can approximate in an aquarium.
Substrate in nature is bedrock, cobble and coarse gravel swept clean by current; fine silt and standing water are absent from its preferred microhabitat.
Feeding
Glyptothorax trilineatus is a benthic omnivore and nocturnal micro-predator. In the wild it forages the rocky substrate for aufwuchs (the biofilm of algae, diatoms and associated micro-invertebrates that coats current-swept stones), detritus, and small invertebrates — insect larvae, aquatic worms and tiny crustaceans. The adhesive thoracic apparatus and the stream current that would carry lighter food items downstream are both consistent with a bottom-hugging, grazing lifestyle.
In the aquarium it will accept sinking pellets, wafer-type algae tabs, and frozen or freeze-dried foods such as bloodworm and tubifex. Because it is predominantly active after dark, feeding after lights-out ensures it is not out-competed by diurnal tankmates. Smooth stones colonised with algae in a well-lit sump or breeding tank can be introduced to provide supplemental grazing material.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Glyptothorax trilineatus has not been formally documented in the scientific literature, and captive observations are very sparse in the hobby record. Most torrent catfishes (Sisoridae) are presumed to be benthic spawners, depositing eggs on or among rocks in or near current, consistent with the substrate-oriented lifestyle of the family. Whether males exhibit any form of courtship or territory-holding around spawning sites is not known for this species.
Sexual dimorphism is not described in the available literature. As with many hillstream species, females may become visibly fuller in the belly when ripe, but no reliable external characters have been published for this species specifically.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Glyptothorax trilineatus has not been reported in the aquarium literature consulted. Breeding records for sisorid torrent catfishes in home aquaria are essentially absent — the combination of cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water and the requirement for appropriate spawning substrate (clean rock in current) make replication in a standard aquarium very difficult.
Based on family-level biology, eggs are likely deposited on rock surfaces and may receive some degree of parental guarding by the male, but this is unconfirmed for this species. Aquarists should treat captive breeding as essentially not achieved and should not purchase this fish with breeding as a primary objective. Wild-collected stock is the probable source of any fish in the trade.
In the aquarium
Glyptothorax trilineatus is a specialist that demands conditions most aquarists do not run as a matter of course, and it is not a beginner's catfish. The overriding requirement is cool, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water: the target range of 50–68 °F sits well below standard tropical tank temperatures, which immediately disqualifies it as a community fish with barbs, tetras, or cichlids. A dedicated species tank or a cool hillstream setup — strong circulation, powerheads creating surface turbulence, large stable boulders and smooth cobble for the fish to grip — is the appropriate environment. Tank size should accommodate an adult of 10–12 in comfortably; a 150-litre or larger footprint with good current coverage is a sensible minimum.
Because the skin is completely scaleless (naked), Glyptothorax trilineatus is sensitive to copper and many standard aquarium medications in the way that all naked-skinned catfish are — loaches and other scaleless fish share the same vulnerability. When treatment is unavoidable, begin at half the dose recommended for scaled fish and observe closely. Do not net this fish: the locking pectoral spines tangle in mesh and can damage the fish and jab the keeper; move it in a container or bag with the current off.
Despite these demands it is a distinctive and rewarding fish for the enthusiast who can provide hillstream conditions. Provide ample flat rock and cobble to satisfy the fish's instinct to grip the substrate; a bare or fine-sand bottom is unsuitable. Feed sinking foods after lights-out. Avoid combining it with warm-water species or any tankmate that requires the ammonia, temperature or water chemistry incompatible with a cool, clean mountain-stream environment.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Glyptothorax trilineatus as Least Concern. The species is described as widespread across its South and Southeast Asian range — India, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand and Laos — and no immediate threats have been documented at the species level. FishBase confirms the Least Concern status.
Nonetheless, pressures on the fast-flowing mountain streams and foothill rivers it occupies are real: dam construction, irrigation withdrawal, sedimentation from deforestation, and agricultural runoff all degrade the clean, well-oxygenated, cobble-bottom habitat torrent catfishes depend upon. The Mekong tributaries in particular face ongoing dam development that fragments populations. As a wild-collected species with no captive-breeding record, the aquarium trade draws on natural populations, though volume is modest given the fish's limited availability and specialist care requirements.
