Taxonomy & naming
Hassar affinis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1881. It belongs to Doradidae, the thorny or talking catfishes, a large Neotropical family named for the barbed spines and the rasping sounds many species can produce. The genus Hassar was revised taxonomically in a study covering the thorny catfish genus within Siluriformes/Doradidae, and the Catalog of Fishes treats Hassar affinis as the currently valid combination.
As with much of Doradidae, older literature sometimes shuffled species between doradid genera before the modern revision settled the group; Hassar affinis has not carried a widely used junior synonym in recent literature reviewed here. The specific epithet affinis is Latin for "related" or "allied", a common descriptor used by nineteenth-century authors for a species judged closely similar to an already-known congener.
Morphology
Hassar affinis reaches a documented maximum of about 8 in standard length, with a recorded weight of roughly 196 g — a modest-sized thorny catfish, not a giant, but decidedly more than a nano fish and worth planning tank space around from the outset. Like other doradids it has a naked, scaleless skin (no true scales, though many doradids carry a row of bony lateral scutes instead), which matters directly for medicating: dose copper-based and other sensitive treatments conservatively, as for loaches, puffers and other scaleless catfishes.
The hallmark of the family is on display here too: stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines that the fish can lock at an angle to the body axis, turning the fin into a rigid, barbed defensive weapon. The serrated edges can slice skin and snag badly in a net, so this fish is best moved in a container rather than netted. Field data show females growing larger than males, a sexual size dimorphism confirmed by the reproductive study from Lake Viana.
Habitat
Hassar affinis is native to northeastern Brazil, documented from the Parnaíba River basin and also recorded from the Turiaçu, Pindaré–Mearim and Itapecuru drainages. It is a demersal (bottom-dwelling) fish of medium to large rivers and their associated floodplain lakes, a pattern reflected directly in the Lake Viana study, which sampled the species from a floodplain lake rather than the open river channel.
Water conditions in these northeastern Brazilian drainages are warm and only mildly acidic to neutral: FishBase reports a temperature range of about 72–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 and moderate hardness (dH 6–15). This is not an extreme soft-acidic blackwater fish, nor a hard-alkaline one — it sits in the broad, moderate middle ground typical of many South American lowland river systems.
Feeding
Hassar affinis is a nocturnal, benthic omnivore. Gut-content analysis of the genus shows a diet dominated by insects, with crustaceans, plant material and occasional fish remains also taken — consistent with FishBase's trophic level estimate of 2.8, placing it as a mid-level omnivore/micro-predator rather than a strict detritivore or piscivore.
In the aquarium this translates to a fish that forages the substrate mostly after dark for whatever it can find: sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm and other meaty frozen foods, and prepared omnivore foods are all appropriate. Because it is most active at night, offering food after the lights go out helps ensure it is not out-competed by diurnal tankmates.
Mating
The most detailed data available on this species' reproduction comes from a field study of 147 specimens sampled monthly from Lake Viana, Brazil, over a full year (February 2012–January 2013). The population showed a strongly female-biased sex ratio of roughly 3.32 females to every male, and first sexual maturity was reached at around 4.5 in — just over half the species' known maximum size.
Spawning was seasonal rather than continuous, with two peaks across the year and the most intense reproductive activity concentrated in the rainy season, February to May. Ovarian analysis showed the eggs developing synchronously in two batches and being released in a single, complete spawning event rather than trickled out gradually — a pattern typical of many seasonal, flood-pulse-spawning South American river fishes. Average absolute fecundity was high, at roughly 47,000 oocytes per female, consistent with an open-water strategy that relies on producing large numbers of eggs rather than on parental care.
Breeding
No aquarium spawning of Hassar affinis is documented in the sources consulted here, and the species is essentially unknown as a captive breeding project in the hobby. What the Lake Viana field study does confirm is the wild reproductive strategy: seasonal, rainy-season-concentrated spawning with high fecundity and a single synchronous egg release, rather than the guarded-nest or internal-fertilisation strategies seen in some other catfish families. There is no indication of parental care in the study, consistent with a broadcast-type strategy typical of many open-water and floodplain-spawning doradids.
The same study recommended a fishing closure during the February–May spawning peak and a minimum catch size of 4.5 in (the size at first maturity) to protect the Lake Viana population — a reminder that, however obscure this species is in the aquarium trade, it supports a real subsistence and small-scale fishery in its native range.
In the aquarium
Hassar affinis is rarely encountered in the hobby, but a keeper taking one on should size the tank to its real adult length of up to 8 in SL rather than treating it as a small community fish — the size trap applies here as with most doradids. As a scaleless catfish it is sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments; dose conservatively and monitor closely if treatment is ever needed.
Its stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines are a genuine handling hazard — move it in a container rather than a net, since the spines readily snag mesh and can jab or slice a careless hand. Being nocturnal and benthic, it appreciates caves, driftwood or dense cover for daytime retreat, with feeding best offered after the lights go down. Provide a sand or fine gravel substrate reflecting its natural sand/pea-gravel riverbed habitat, moderate warm temperatures (72–82 °F) and a pH in the 6.0–7.5 range.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Hassar affinis as Least Concern, an assessment from 2018 according to FishBase. FishBase also reports high population resilience and low vulnerability to fishing pressure for the species, consistent with its wide distribution across several northeastern Brazilian drainages (Parnaíba, Turiaçu, Pindaré–Mearim and Itapecuru) rather than a single isolated river system.
That said, the Lake Viana field study's own management recommendations — a rainy-season fishing closure and a minimum catch size — signal that local fishing pressure on floodplain-lake populations is a real, if currently manageable, concern distinct from the species' broad-scale Least Concern status.
