Auchenipterus menezesi is a small driftwood catfish endemic to two neighbouring river basins in northeastern Brazil, the Parnaíba and the Pindaré-Mirim. It belongs to Auchenipteridae, the one catfish family that has abandoned egg-scattering altogether: the male's anal fin is remodelled into an intromittent organ, mating is internal, and the female carries stored sperm for days to weeks before laying a fertile clutch. Modest in size and rarely seen in the hobby, it is best known from fisheries surveys and museum material rather than aquaria, and its biology is a useful reminder that not every catfish spawns the way a Corydoras does.

Taxonomy & naming

Auchenipterus menezesi was described by Carl J. Ferraris Jr. and Richard P. Vari in 1999. It sits in the family Auchenipteridae, the driftwood catfishes, within the genus Auchenipterus — a group of slender, laterally compressed, largely nocturnal catfishes distributed across South America. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Auchenipterus menezesi as the valid combination; the species has not been shuffled through older genera in the way many Siluriformes have.

The species epithet honours Rui Simões de Menezes (1917–2001), a Brazilian ichthyologist affiliated with the Universidade Federal do Ceará, recognising his contributions to the study of Brazilian freshwater fishes. As with other Auchenipteridae, the genus name Auchenipterus references the fish's fin arrangement (from the Greek for "neck" and "fin"), though the practical identifying features for aquarists are the compressed body and the family's unusual reproductive anatomy described below.

Morphology

Auchenipterus menezesi is a small catfish, reaching a maximum recorded size of only about 5 in standard length — modest even by driftwood-cat standards, and well within the range that a modest aquarium could accommodate, though the species is essentially unknown as a hobby fish. Like other members of the genus it has a laterally compressed, elongate body built for an active, midwater-to-benthic lifestyle rather than the flattened, bottom-hugging profile of many catfishes.

As in all catfishes the skin is scaleless, which carries a direct care implication: this is a med-sensitive fish, and copper-based and many other medications should be dosed conservatively — often at half the labelled rate — exactly as with loaches, puffers and eels. Auchenipteridae also carry the family's typical stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines, which lock erect and can snag a net or jab a careless hand; the fish is best moved in a container rather than netted.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Parnaíba and Pindaré-Mirim river basins of Maranhão and Piauí states in northeastern Brazil — a comparatively narrow native range for a South American catfish. FishBase describes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of tropical rivers, meaning it moves between the bottom and open water rather than staying fixed to the substrate.

Detailed water-chemistry data for the species' home rivers were not captured in research for this profile; specific pH and hardness figures should be treated as data sparse rather than assumed. Given the tropical, lowland-river setting typical of Auchenipteridae generally, warm, soft-to-moderate freshwater conditions are a reasonable starting point for anyone attempting to keep it, but this is inference from the family rather than a confirmed reading for A. menezesi itself.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of about 3.4 ± 0.5 for Auchenipterus menezesi, consistent with an omnivore-to-carnivore diet — a nocturnal benthic and midwater forager taking aquatic invertebrates, small prey and other food items rather than a strict herbivore or specialist feeder. This fits the wider pattern in driftwood catfishes, most of which hunt after dark.

In an aquarium setting, a driftwood cat of this profile would be expected to take sinking pellets, frozen foods and other prepared foods offered after lights-out, when it is naturally most active; feeding late avoids it being out-competed by diurnal tankmates. No aquarium-specific feeding records for this species were found in research for this profile, so this guidance is extrapolated from the family rather than documented for A. menezesi directly.

Mating

Auchenipteridae is the only catfish family known to fertilise internally, and Auchenipterus menezesi shares this trait with its relatives. In place of the broadcast spawning typical of most catfishes, the male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ, and a pair of seminal vesicles produce sperm packaged into discrete, mucus-bound bundles called spermatozeugmata. During mating the male nips at the female's anal fin, chases her and intertwines his body with hers to transfer these sperm packets internally.

The female then stores the sperm in specialised epithelial tissue within her genital tract — an adaptation that lets her lay a fertile clutch of eggs well after the mating event itself, reportedly up to around two weeks later in related driftwood cats. This decoupling of mating from spawning is genuinely unusual among catfishes and is the single most distinctive fact about this species' reproductive biology.

Breeding

Set against that mating system, Auchenipterus menezesi's breeding mode is internal fertilisation followed by delayed, stored-sperm spawning: the female releases her fertilised eggs into the open water some time after mating rather than the pair guarding a nest or brooding young. Once the eggs are laid, parental care appears to be absent or minimal, in keeping with the broadcast-style release typical of Auchenipterus once the female's stored sperm is used.

No record of this species being bred in captivity was found in research for this profile, and that omission is itself informative: driftwood cats' unusual internal-fertilisation biology makes them poor candidates for casual home breeding, since replicating the mating behaviour and timing the female's delayed spawn is far harder to engineer than triggering an egg-scattering species. Treat this species, on current evidence, as essentially not bred in the hobby.

In the aquarium

Auchenipterus menezesi is not an established aquarium fish, and its small size — a documented maximum of 5 in SL — should not be read as an invitation to treat it casually; any driftwood cat of this build is an active, laterally compressed swimmer that benefits from length in the tank rather than a tight footprint. Because it is scaleless like every catfish, it is medication-sensitive: dose copper-based treatments and other medications conservatively, generally at reduced strength relative to scaled fish.

Its stiff, serrated pectoral and dorsal spines can lock erect and tangle in aquarium nets, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted to avoid injury to the fish or a jab to the keeper. As a presumed nocturnal forager, it would appreciate cover for daytime hiding and feeding after lights-out. Given the almost complete absence of hobby documentation, anyone acquiring this species should expect to be working largely from first principles and from what is known of Auchenipteridae generally rather than from established aquarium literature.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Auchenipterus menezesi as Least Concern on 7 November 2018. As a small-range Brazilian endemic restricted to the Parnaíba and Pindaré-Mirim basins, it faces no major documented threats, and FishBase notes a high population resilience with a minimum population-doubling time under 15 months, suggesting the species can recover quickly from disturbance.

That said, its restriction to just two neighbouring river basins in Maranhão and Piauí means it is exposed to any concentrated pressure on those specific watersheds — agricultural runoff, damming or habitat alteration — even though no such threat is currently flagged. There is no evidence the species is targeted by the aquarium trade, so collection pressure does not appear to be a relevant conservation factor at this time.
