Taxonomy & naming
Ictalurus australis was described by American ichthyologist Seth Eugene Meek in 1904, originally placed in the genus Amiurus (an old, now-abandoned catfish genus) as Amiurus australis before later authors moved it into Ictalurus, where the Catalog of Fishes now treats it as valid. It belongs to the family Ictaluridae, the North American catfishes, a family otherwise best known for the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), blue catfish (I. furcatus) and the various bullheads.
The genus name Ictalurus derives from Greek ichthys (fish) and ailuros (cat), a straightforward reference to the barbelled, whiskered face shared by all the ictalurids. The species epithet australis is Latin for "southern", marking this as one of the southernmost members of a genus otherwise centred on the Mississippi basin and other Nearctic drainages — Ictalurus australis instead is endemic to the Pánuco River basin of Mexico, well south of most of its relatives.
Morphology
Ictalurus australis has the classic ictalurid body plan: a smooth, scaleless skin, a broad head with long barbels around the mouth, an adipose fin, and stiff, serrated spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins that lock erect when the fish is threatened or handled. This places it alongside its northern relatives as a fish that should be moved in a container rather than netted, since the locking spines readily snag mesh and can jab the handler.
Detailed morphometric data for this species is sparse, and a documented maximum length has not been established in the sources consulted. Given the total absence of husbandry or aquarium-trade records, there is nothing to recommend keeping this species outside of a research or conservation context; it is presented here for its taxonomic and conservation interest rather than as a candidate for the hobby.
