Taxonomy & naming
The combination Ictalurus lacustris traces to an old subspecific arrangement, Ictalurus lacustris punctatus, that once circulated for this fish; FishBase lists it as a synonym, with the modern valid name being Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque, 1818). The species belongs to the family Ictaluridae, the North American catfishes, in the genus Ictalurus. The Catalog of Fishes governs the valid combination, and that combination is Ictalurus punctatus today — this entry keeps the historical binomial Ictalurus lacustris as it was captured, while noting the modern name for clarity.
The common name "channel catfish" refers to its habit of holding in the channels of rivers and reservoirs, while "lake catfish" (echoed in the specific epithet lacustris, Latin for "of a lake") reflects its equally strong presence in still and semi-still water across its native range. It is by far the most economically important catfish in North America, underpinning a large aquaculture industry distinct from any aquarium trade.
Morphology
This is a heavy-bodied catfish with a deeply forked tail, a smooth scaleless skin, and eight barbels around the mouth (four under the chin, two at the nostrils, two longer ones at the corners of the jaw). Colouration ranges from olive or blue-grey above to silvery white on the belly, and young fish often show scattered dark spots along the flanks that fade with age and size.
Like other ictalurids it carries a stiff, serrated, lockable spine at the leading edge of the dorsal fin and of each pectoral fin — capable of jabbing an unwary hand and best avoided by moving the fish in a container rather than a net. Size is the defining fact of this species: the Florida Museum of Natural History gives a maximum around 52–54 in total length (roughly 19.5–21.5 in standard length is a typical large adult), with fish over 25 kg documented and a common adult size near 22 in. It is unambiguously a large, powerful fish, not a small aquarium catfish.
Habitat
The native range is North American freshwater — principally the Mississippi River drainage and the connected river and lake systems of the central and eastern United States and adjacent Canada, with wide subsequent stocking well beyond that original range for sport fishing and aquaculture. It occupies large rivers, reservoirs, oxbows and natural lakes, favouring deeper channels, submerged cover and slow to moderate current.
This is a temperate-water fish, not a tropical one. It tolerates a broad range roughly 41–86 °F and pH 6.5–8.5, reflecting the seasonal swings of Nearctic rivers and lakes rather than the warm, stable conditions of a heated tropical aquarium. It does not need — and does not benefit from — constant tropical heat.
Feeding
Diet shifts markedly with size. Juveniles feed largely on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, algae and plant material, foraging opportunistically along the bottom. As fish grow past roughly 12 in they become increasingly piscivorous, taking small fish, crayfish and large insects, and a large adult behaves as an opportunistic predator that will swallow anything it can fit in its mouth — a documented Des Moines River food-habits study (Bailey) confirms this size-linked shift from insects to fish.
In practical terms this means any tankmate small enough to be swallowed is at risk once the fish approaches adult size; suitable companions must be too large to fit in its mouth. It readily takes meaty foods — whole fish, prawn, pellets — and is not a fussy feeder.
Mating
Spawning is seasonal, occurring over roughly three to four months in spring as water warms, and pairs form around a cavity rather than displaying open-water courtship. The male selects and defends a dark cavity or undercut bank — in the wild an undercut log, rock crevice or burrow, in aquaculture settings often an artificial spawning can — and courts a female to that site.
Adults characteristically stop feeding during the breeding period, channelling effort into site defence and, after spawning, guarding the clutch. Sexing is not obvious from colour alone; behaviour and cavity occupation during the spawning season are the practical cues used by hatchery managers.
Breeding
Ictalurus punctatus/lacustris is a cavity nester: the female deposits a compact gelatinous egg mass inside the male's chosen cavity, and the male alone guards and continuously fans the eggs to keep them oxygenated and free of silt and fungus, a task that occupies him for the roughly six to seven days it takes eggs to hatch at around 81 °F. Parental care continues after hatching, with the male guarding the fry until their yolk sacs are absorbed.
In practice this species is bred at pond and hatchery scale for the aquaculture and stocking industries, not in home aquaria — it requires large cavities, seasonal temperature cycling and, above all, far more space than any tank can offer an adult of this size. It is not a realistic home-breeding project.
In the aquarium
The single most important fact for a prospective keeper is size: this fish is routinely sold as a small, appealing juvenile but grows to over a metre and many tens of kilograms in the wild, and even modestly sized adults far exceed what a home aquarium — or in most cases even a large private pond — can comfortably support. It should not be purchased on impulse from a small tag; ask what the adult size will be before buying any Ictalurus.
Like other ictalurids its skin is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many treatments — dose conservatively, roughly half the labelled rate, and monitor closely. It also carries stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that snag in nets and can puncture skin; move it in a container rather than netting it. As a cool-to-warm temperate species it does not want constant tropical heat, and as a nocturnal, opportunistic predator any tankmate must be too large to be swallowed. In practice this is a fish for large outdoor ponds, public aquaria or catch-and-release angling rather than the home tank.
Conservation
Neither Ictalurus lacustris nor its modern equivalent Ictalurus punctatus has been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, so the status here is Not Evaluated. This reflects the species' abundance and wide distribution rather than any data gap of concern: channel catfish are extremely common and heavily farmed across North America, supporting one of the continent's largest freshwater aquaculture industries, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service treats it as a widespread, secure species.
The main conservation-relevant issue is the opposite of rarity — this species has been introduced well outside its native Mississippi-basin range for sport fishing and farming, and where introduced it can compete with and prey on native fish communities. Its native range itself faces the general pressures on large North American river systems: damming, siltation and water-quality change, though the species' broad tolerance makes it more resilient than many co-occurring fish.
