Taxonomy & naming
Leptodoras hasemani was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1915. It belongs to the family Doradidae, the thorny or talking catfishes of South America, within the genus Leptodoras — one of several elongate, soft-bodied doradid genera sometimes grouped informally as the "thin doradids." As with much of Siluriformes, generic limits within Doradidae have been revised repeatedly since the early 20th century, and older literature on this species-group may use different generic placements; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, Leptodoras hasemani.
The genus name Leptodoras combines the Greek leptos, "slender" or "thin", with Doras, the type genus of the family — so, literally, "slender Doras", describing the elongate body shape shared by the genus's members relative to the deeper-bodied thorny catfishes. The species epithet hasemani honours a collector, following the common early-20th-century practice of naming new South American fishes for the naturalists who obtained the type material.
Morphology
Leptodoras hasemani has the typical build of its genus: an elongate, laterally compressed body that looks almost eel-like or knifefish-like compared with the boxier, heavily armoured doradids such as Megalodoras or Oxydoras. Like all doradines it carries a row of bony, hook-bearing lateral scutes running along the flank rather than true scales, and it bears the stiff, serrated, locking spines typical of the family at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins. A distinctive dark spot or blotch on the distal (outer) half of the dorsal fin is a useful field mark for the species.
Published maximum size is 9 in total length, with a recorded weight around 180 g — a modest-sized doradid, but still a fish that needs real swimming room, not a small tank. As in other doradids the skin and scutes are not a substitute for true scales, and the species should be treated as medication-sensitive accordingly (see "In the aquarium").
Habitat
This species is native to the Branco, Orinoco and Essequibo river basins of the western Guiana Shield, with more recent records from the middle Tapajós basin on the Brazilian Shield. It is a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated) fish of the main channels of large rivers, characteristically found around open sandy beaches rather than flooded forest, leaf litter or driftwood tangles.
By day it stays over deeper sand and silt in the main channel; FishBase notes a dusk migration into shallower water close to shore, where it forages over sandy and silty substrates through the night. Specific published water chemistry for this species is sparse; as a wide-ranging Guiana Shield / Amazon-basin river fish it can be kept under warm, soft-to-neutral conditions typical of large South American river systems, but exact figures should be treated as an estimate rather than a site-specific reading.
Feeding
Leptodoras hasemani is a nocturnal benthic forager with a low trophic level (around 2.8 on FishBase's scale), consistent with a diet weighted toward small invertebrates, detritus and other low-level food items sifted from sand and silt rather than active predation on other fish.
In the aquarium it should be treated as a nocturnal micro-predator/omnivore: offer sinking pellets, frozen foods (bloodworm, mysis, chopped prawn) and other prepared foods after lights-out, when this species is naturally active and not out-competed by diurnal tankmates. A sandy substrate lets it forage in a more natural manner.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Leptodoras hasemani in the literature consulted here. Breeding biology in the thin doradid genera generally is poorly studied compared with the handful of commercially important or frequently kept doradids, and nothing specific to this species' mating behaviour is confirmed by the sources available.
Breeding
Breeding of Leptodoras hasemani is unrecorded in the aquarium. Like most Doradidae outside a few well-studied genera, this species is not known to have been bred in captivity, and no hormone-induced or hobbyist spawning reports were found. Aquarium stock should be assumed wild-collected, and keepers should not expect this to be a home-breedable fish; treat any claim otherwise with caution absent documented evidence.
In the aquarium
Leptodoras hasemani wants a large aquarium with a soft sandy substrate, minimal decor and strong filtration with good current, reflecting its life over sand in flowing river channels — this is not a fish for a small, ornament-cluttered tank. It reaches 9 in TL, so plan tank size around the adult, not the juvenile sold in shops, and give it open swimming space along with some cover to retreat to by day.
Two care points follow directly from its biology. It has no true scales — only bony lateral scutes over otherwise naked skin — so treat it as medication-sensitive the way loaches and other scaleless or lightly armoured catfish are: dose copper and other harsh treatments conservatively, often at half the labelled rate. It also carries stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal spines that snag in a net and can jab the handler, so move it in a container rather than netting it. It is described as a peaceful, sociable but somewhat nervous fish, best kept with calm bottom- and mid-water companions such as Corydoras or Brochis rather than boisterous tankmates, and it is most active after dark, so provide some shelter for daytime hours.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Leptodoras hasemani as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 2020. This reflects a wide distribution across several major river basins of the Guiana Shield and adjacent Amazon drainages (Branco, Orinoco, Essequibo, and the middle Tapajós), rather than any specific study of population trend.
As with many wide-ranging, sand-channel river fishes of northern South America, the main long-term pressures are basin-scale — damming, mining-related sedimentation and water-quality changes in the rivers it inhabits — rather than targeted collection, since it has no significant aquarium trade profile of its own.
