Taxonomy & naming
Leptodoras linnelli was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Leptodoras as the valid genus. The family Doradidae — commonly called thorny catfishes or talking catfishes — is an exclusively South American clade whose members carry bony lateral scutes ("thorns") along the flanks, though these are reduced or modified in the more slender Leptodoras species. Siluriformes as a whole has undergone substantial revision in recent decades, but Leptodoras has remained stable.
The genus name Leptodoras combines the Greek leptos (slender, thin) with Doras, the type genus of the family — thus "slender Doras". The species epithet linnelli honours an individual recorded in the original description, following the convention of naming species for collectors or sponsors. This fish has no widely used common name in the aquarium trade and circulates under its scientific name when it appears at all.
Morphology
Leptodoras linnelli is a small, elongate doradid with the characteristic features of the family: a broad, flattened head, three pairs of barbels (a single long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs), a prominent adipose fin, and a moderately forked caudal fin. The body is relatively slender compared with robust doradids such as Pterodoras or Megalodoras. Adult standard length is approximately 4–6 in, making this one of the smaller members of the family.
The most important structural traits for the keeper are the stiff, serrated, locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins. These spines can be locked erect — a defence against predators — and they tangle easily in a net, making netted fish very difficult to free without injury to fish or keeper. The skin is entirely scaleless (naked), a character shared with all catfishes and a fact of direct relevance to medication.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Amazon basin in Brazil, including a tributary of the Hyacinth River. Like most Amazonian doradids, it inhabits slow to moderately flowing lowland waters — river margins, flooded forest, and stream channels with leaf litter, woody debris, and a soft substrate. These are warm, soft, typically acidic environments.
Water conditions in this range are characteristically warm (approximately 75–82 °F), soft (low conductivity), and acidic to near-neutral (pH roughly 5.5–7.0), though precise measurements for this species' specific collection points are not published. The fish spends daylight hours concealed beneath driftwood, leaf banks, or in crevices, emerging at dusk and through the night to forage.
Feeding
Leptodoras linnelli is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages the substrate after dark for invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and detritus — using its barbels to sense prey in low light or complete darkness.
In the aquarium it accepts a varied diet of sinking pellets and wafers, frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia, and thawed invertebrates. Because this species is most active after lights-out, food should be offered in the evening or after the main tank lights are off; in a community aquarium the fish may otherwise lose food to diurnal competitors before it has a chance to feed.
Mating
No detailed observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Leptodoras linnelli have been published, and the species is not established in the aquarium hobby in any numbers. On the basis of general doradid biology, mating is expected to involve pairing or small group interactions at the substrate, likely triggered by seasonal conditions (rising water, temperature shifts) that mimic the onset of the Amazonian wet season.
The family Doradidae shows male-guarded cavity spawning in studied species, but the specific mating cues and behaviours of this small, obscure species remain undocumented. Data are genuinely sparse, and no captive spawning accounts are available to fill the gap.
Breeding
Leptodoras linnelli is not known to have been bred in captivity, and no account of successful aquarium breeding has been traced. Based on the pattern common to small doradids, the species is presumed to be a cavity or shelter spawner with the male guarding the eggs — a mode documented in related thorny catfishes — but this has not been confirmed for this species specifically.
Large-scale commercial breeding via hormone induction, as practiced with some pimelodids and pangasiids, is not relevant to a fish this size and obscurity. Any hobbyist keeping a group in species-appropriate conditions (warm, soft, acidic water; ample caves and driftwood; a seasonal wet-season simulation) would be in the best position to observe natural spawning attempts, but the outcome remains unknown. Honesty requires noting that breeding data for this species are absent.
In the aquarium
Leptodoras linnelli is an obscure species that demands the same basic care as other small Amazonian doradids. A tank of 20 US gal or more suits a small group; the fish are peaceful toward tankmates they cannot swallow, but they are secretive and do best when the tank provides ample driftwood, leaf litter, and caves for daytime hiding. Lighting should be subdued or heavily planted; this fish is largely inactive under bright light.
Water should be warm (75–82 °F), soft, and slightly acidic (pH 5.5–7.0) — conditions that favour the soft-water community fish with which it might be housed. Two critical points follow directly from its biology. First, the skin is entirely scaleless, making the fish more sensitive than scaled species to copper and to medications containing malachite green, formalin, or salt — treat at half the normal dose (or less) and monitor closely. Second, the locking pectoral and dorsal spines make netting dangerous for both fish and keeper; always move this catfish in a smooth-sided container, never in a net. Feed sinking foods after lights-out.
Conservation
Leptodoras linnelli has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is typical for obscure, single-drainage Amazonian catfishes that attract little targeted survey effort or trade volume; the absence of an assessment does not imply security, and many similar species are later found to have restricted ranges.
The Amazon basin faces escalating pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, dam construction, and climate-driven changes to flood pulse dynamics — all of which affect the flooded-forest and river-margin habitats that small doradids depend on. Because Leptodoras linnelli is not established in aquaculture and has minimal aquarium presence, any trade specimens would be wild-collected. Formal range and population data are lacking.
