Malapterurus electricus, the electric catfish, is the most electrically potent freshwater fish kept by aquarists and one of the stranger catfishes in the hobby: a scaleless, cave-dwelling nocturnal predator of the Nile and Congo basins capable of producing discharges measured up to around 350 volts, used for navigation, prey detection and defence. It grows to a genuine 47 in in the wild — a size the trade rarely advertises — and its naked skin, solitary temperament and electrical capacity make it a species suited only to experienced keepers with very large, dedicated aquaria.

Taxonomy & naming

Malapterurus electricus was formally described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789, based on material from the Nile. The genus Malapterurus belongs to the family Malapteruridae, the electric catfishes, a small and ancient African family with no close relatives among the more familiar aquarium catfishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Malapterurus electricus as the valid name; the genus name was for a time applied within a broad Siluriformes but the family's electric-organ anatomy marks it as a natural and distinct lineage.

The species has accumulated earlier synonyms under names such as Silurus electricus (the Linnaean binomial that preceded Gmelin's formal description in the newer combination) before settling under the current authority. Several other Malapterurus species have since been described from West and Central Africa, but M. electricus — the Nile and Congo form — remains the species most commonly encountered in the aquarium trade.

Morphology

The electric catfish has a robust, cylindrical body that is noticeably plump toward the anterior and tapers toward a rounded tail; the caudal fin is rounded rather than forked. The head is broad and flattened, with a wide mouth and three pairs of barbels: one maxillary pair and two pairs of mandibular barbels. There are no pectoral or dorsal spines — unlike most catfishes, Malapterurus lacks the locking-spine armament entirely, making it easier to handle physically but no safer (see below).

The skin is entirely scaleless and smooth, characteristic of the family. Ground colour ranges from grey to olive-brown, often with a mottled or spotted pattern, and the pale underside contrasts with the darker dorsum. The electric organ is a modified layer of muscle tissue that lies just under the skin over most of the body, giving the fish its characteristic sausage-like silhouette. Maximum recorded total length is around 47 in, though most wild fish are in the 23.5–31.5 in range and aquarium specimens are rarely kept long enough to approach that size.

Habitat

Malapterurus electricus is broadly distributed across Africa's two great river systems: the Nile and its tributaries, from Egypt and Sudan into East Africa, and the Congo Basin, one of the largest tropical drainage systems on Earth. The type locality is the Nile River. Within these systems it occupies slow-flowing rivers, floodplain pools, drainage channels, swamps and heavily vegetated margins — low-energy environments with soft substrates, abundant cover and turbid or at least shaded water.

Water parameters across its range sit in the moderate tropical range: temperatures around 72–79 °F, pH broadly 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. This is not a rift-lake or hard-water species; it is a river and floodplain fish of the great African lowland drainages, spending the day sheltered in root tangles, submerged logs or bankside cavities and emerging to hunt after dark.

Feeding

Malapterurus electricus is a nocturnal benthic predator. In the wild it takes small fish, aquatic invertebrates and carrion, foraging along the bottom and in cover after dark; the electric organ plays an active role in prey detection and stunning, allowing it to immobilise small fish before swallowing them. It is an ambush hunter rather than an active chaser, relying on concealment and electric sensing.

In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets, chunks of raw fish or prawn, and frozen meaty foods such as earthworms and mussel. Live or fresh foods are eagerly taken and help to condition larger specimens. Because it is strongly nocturnal, food should be offered after lights-out; in a communal or semi-communal setup it will be outcompeted at the surface by diurnal species and may not feed well under bright lighting. Its capacity to stun and swallow tankmates of significant size means any fish that fits in its mouth is at risk.

Mating

Little is documented about the courtship behaviour of Malapterurus electricus under aquarium conditions, and the species is not regularly bred in the hobby. What is known from the wild and from the limited captive literature suggests that, like many large catfishes, it does not invest heavily in courtship display; the electric organ may play a role in communication between individuals during reproductive periods, as the discharge pattern changes in the presence of conspecifics.

Sexual dimorphism is not well described for the species; mature females are expected to be bulkier-bodied than males, as is common in large catfishes. Separating a confirmed pair is complicated by the solitary and aggressively territorial nature of adults, which tend to fight when kept together, making controlled pairing in captivity very difficult.

Breeding

Malapterurus electricus is not bred with any regularity in home aquaria. Most individuals available in the trade are wild-collected from the Nile or Congo drainages; farm breeding, where it occurs, is at a commercial or institutional scale not accessible to the typical aquarist. Spawning details in the literature are sparse — the species is likely a substrate or cavity spawner with some degree of parental guarding in line with other large river catfishes, but well-documented captive spawnings are essentially unknown.

Keepers should not expect to breed this fish. Its solitary aggression, large adult size, and the difficulties of maintaining a compatible pair without injury make aquarium breeding essentially impractical for hobbyists. It is one of those species where the honest answer is that breeding has not been achieved in aquaria in any documented or repeatable way.

In the aquarium

The electric catfish is a specialist species demanding a very large, dedicated aquarium. The wild maximum of 47 in — and a realistic captive adult size well exceeding 23.5 in — means it is not suitable for any ordinary home tank; a species-only or large-oddballs aquarium of several hundred litres is the minimum practical approach, and a much larger setup is appropriate for a full-grown specimen. This is the size trap that catches many buyers of young fish: juveniles sold at 4–6 in give no indication of eventual adult dimensions.

The scaleless skin is highly sensitive to medications, particularly copper-based treatments and many proprietary antiparasitic preparations. If treatment is necessary, use half the label dose as a starting point and monitor carefully — the same sensitivity applies to salt (use low concentrations cautiously). Provide large caves, sections of pipe or hollow driftwood for daytime shelter; this is a strongly nocturnal species that is stressed by open, brightly lit aquaria.

The most distinctive hazard is the electric discharge. At up to around 350 volts, the shock from a large individual is unpleasant and potentially dangerous to a person with a heart condition or who receives repeated discharges; it is not normally lethal to a healthy adult but should not be underestimated. Do not place hands in the tank unsupported; use rubber gloves for maintenance if reaching near the fish. Unlike most catfishes, this species has no locking spines to snag in a net, but move it in a large container rather than bare-handed. It is highly aggressive toward conspecifics and will attempt to eat most tankmates small enough to be swallowed; only very large, robust fish make safe companions, and a single-specimen setup is usually the safest approach.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Malapterurus electricus as Least Concern, with the assessment last evaluated in 2020. The species is widespread across the Nile and Congo basins — two of Africa's largest and most hydrologically stable drainages — and no major population declines or range contractions have been documented. Its broad ecological tolerance across slow-flowing lowland habitats and its tolerance of some degree of water-quality degradation contribute to its stable status.

Most of the aquarium trade supply is wild-collected; there is some limited commercial production but no large-scale captive-breeding industry. Collection pressure is not considered a significant threat at current levels given the species' wide range. Long-term concerns relate to dam construction, floodplain drainage and pollution in parts of its range, but at the whole-species level it remains a resilient and widespread African catfish.
