Enteromius neglectus, sometimes called the southern sidespot barb, is a slender African cyprinid described by Boulenger in 1903 from the Nile drainage. It belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Enteromius, which encompasses the bulk of sub-Saharan Africa's small and medium-sized barbs. Found along the River Nile from Egypt south into Ethiopia, it inhabits the well-oxygenated fresh waters of one of the world's longest river systems. Like all members of its genus it is an active, shoaling egg-scatterer with no parental care, and its Least Concern status on the IUCN Red List reflects a wide range and no evidence of serious decline.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius neglectus was described by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1903, with the parenthetical authority indicating the species has since been moved from Boulenger's original generic placement. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Enteromius neglectus (Boulenger, 1903).

The genus Enteromius is a sweeping African radiation that was long lumped within the old catch-all Barbus or Puntius. Phylogenetic and morphological work over recent decades has progressively carved the African small-barb fauna into more natural groups, with Enteromius receiving increasing use for many of the sub-Saharan representatives. The species epithet neglectus — from the Latin for "overlooked" or "neglected" — likely reflects the species' history of passing unrecognised or being treated as a junior synonym before being formally recognised as distinct. Older literature may list it under Barbus neglectus.

Morphology

Enteromius neglectus is a moderately slender, fusiform barb of modest size, typical of the African stream-barb body plan. Like most Enteromius it has a streamlined profile suited to life in flowing water, with a slightly forked caudal fin, relatively large scales, and paired barbels around the mouth adapted for probing the substrate. Colouration is generally silvery to pale olive-gold on the flanks, often with a darker lateral line and variable dark markings — a pattern common across many Nile-basin cyprinids.

Sexual dimorphism follows the broad barb pattern: females tend to be fuller-bodied when gravid, while males may show slightly brighter colouration at breeding time. Precise size data for this species are sparse in the literature; as a mid-sized Enteromius of the Nile drainage it is likely to reach somewhere in the range of 3–4.5 in total length under natural conditions, though the cache does not provide a confirmed maximum.

Habitat

Enteromius neglectus is reported from the River Nile and its tributaries from Egypt south into Ethiopia, inhabiting the fresh waters of one of the world's great drainage systems. Breeding

Spawning in Enteromius neglectus, as in all barbs, produces adhesive eggs that fall among plants, onto gravel, or into substrate crevices where they develop without parental care. In large river systems such as the Nile drainage, barbs are often seasonal spawners, with peak reproductive activity coinciding with the flood season when rising waters open new habitat and food resources for larvae.

The adults eat their own eggs and fry given the opportunity, providing no guarding or provisioning of any kind. Aquarists keeping this species would need to remove adults after spawning or use a substrate mesh to protect the eggs. Eggs of tropical barbs typically hatch within one to two days at suitable temperature, and fry become free-swimming shortly after, feeding initially on fine live foods such as infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp.

In the aquarium

Enteromius neglectus is not a commonly traded aquarium fish and is unlikely to be encountered in the mainstream hobby. It is a species of ichthyological and biogeographical interest rather than a staple of the ornamental trade, and most references to it appear in systematic and faunal works rather than aquarium literature.

For specialist keepers who may obtain it, the standard guidance for active Nile-drainage barbs applies: a roomy, well-filtered tank with good flow, maintained at tropical temperatures broadly in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, suits this kind of species. A shoal of at least six individuals is appropriate to reflect natural behaviour. A varied diet of quality dry foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates would meet its nutritional needs. Compatibility with similarly sized, active fishes of non-predatory disposition would be the guiding principle for tank selection.

Conservation

Enteromius neglectus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Its range along the River Nile from Egypt into Ethiopia spans one of the most historically continuous large-river systems in the world, and no evidence of a major population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category has been identified.

Nevertheless, the Nile system faces considerable and growing anthropogenic pressure: damming (notably the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and older Aswan infrastructure), agricultural water extraction, sedimentation from upland deforestation, and pollution from urban and agricultural runoff all affect the quality and connectivity of freshwater habitat. For small barbs dependent on intact riverine conditions, long-term monitoring remains important even where current status is reassuring.
