Taxonomy & naming
Microglanis iheringi was described by Gomes in 1946 and is placed in the family Pseudopimelodidae, the bumblebee catfishes of South America — a small family of dwarf and mid-sized naked catfishes allied to the larger pimelodid long-whiskered cats. The genus Microglanis is the core genus of this assemblage and contains around twenty recognised species, all sharing the compact body, broad head, and bold transverse banding that give the group its common name.
Historically Microglanis was shuffled between broader pimelodoid arrangements, and some older references associate the genus loosely with Pseudopimelodus, but current consensus anchors Pseudopimelodidae as a distinct family. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for valid names within this family. The epithet iheringi honours Hermann von Ihering, the German-Brazilian naturalist who contributed substantially to knowledge of South American fauna in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Morphology
M. iheringi is a small, stocky catfish with a broad, flattened head, a short robust body, and three pairs of barbels — a long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs — that give the genus its alert, whiskered profile. The most arresting feature is the bold colour pattern: a pale cream or yellowish ground colour crossed by broad, dark chocolate-brown saddles that wrap around the back and flanks, creating a bumblebee or hornet banding that is visible even in dim light. Fins are typically marked with dark bars or mottling consistent with the body saddles.
Adult size is around 2–2.5 in total length, placing it firmly among the smaller aquarium catfishes and making it one of the few pseudopimelodids genuinely suited to modest community tanks. The skin is entirely naked — no scales, no scutes — which increases absorption of waterborne chemicals and demands conservative dosing of any copper-based or organophosphate treatment. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff spines that lock erect as a defence; handle with care to avoid injury and to prevent tangling in a net.
Habitat
The natural range of M. iheringi encompasses Venezuela, with records from the northern and western drainages of South America; the genus as a whole is distributed across the northern and central portions of the continent. It inhabits the shallower, faster sections of streams and small rivers — rocky runs and riffles where the current cleans the substrate and organic leaf- and wood-litter accumulates in eddies. Such habitats tend to have warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water: temperatures typically 73–81 °F, pH in the range 6.0–7.5, and low to moderate hardness.
During daylight hours M. iheringi is almost entirely sedentary, pressed against the underside of a rock, beneath a submerged log, or buried in leaf litter. Its cryptic banding makes it nearly invisible in such resting spots. After dark it becomes active, moving along the substrate in search of food. Turbid or silty conditions and still water are less typical of its home range than clean, moderately oxygenated stream flow.
Feeding
M. iheringi is a nocturnal micro-predator and benthic opportunist. In its natural streams it takes aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates encountered on and around the substrate after dark. Like other pseudopimelodids it may also take very small fish or shrimp if the opportunity arises — a consideration when choosing tankmates.
In the aquarium it does well on a diet of sinking pellets or wafers offered at lights-out, supplemented with frozen and live invertebrate foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, and small earthworm pieces. Because it feeds almost exclusively nocturnally it can be overlooked in a busy community where faster daytime feeders claim all the food; a late-evening feeding ensures it receives adequate nutrition. It is not a finicky eater once settled, but may be slow to accept dry foods when first introduced — start with frozen or live offerings.
Mating
Little is documented about wild courtship behaviour in M. iheringi. In the broader genus Microglanis, aquarium spawning accounts are rare and often anecdotal, with no standardised protocol established in the hobby literature. Conditioning with varied live and frozen foods and the provision of sheltered spawning sites — caves, crevices, sections of pipe — appear to be the usual preparatory steps.
Sex determination is difficult externally; mature females are sometimes reported to appear broader across the abdomen when gravid, but this is subtle. Nothing in the available literature confirms dramatic sexual dimorphism in M. iheringi specifically, and keepers are advised to maintain a small group rather than a pair to improve the likelihood of having both sexes represented.
Breeding
Captive breeding of M. iheringi is rarely achieved and poorly documented. There are no broadly replicated reports of successful spawning in the aquarium hobby, and the reproductive biology — clutch size, parental behaviour, larval development — remains largely unknown from published aquarium sources. Some hobbyists report accidental spawnings under conditions of seasonal temperature fluctuation and plentiful live food, but these accounts are scattered and unverified in the literature.
Until more detailed breeding reports are available, the best guidance is to provide a species-focused group in a well-planted, cave-rich aquarium, condition with high-protein live and frozen foods, and monitor for spawning activity after lights-out. A soft, slightly acidic water regime matching the natural habitat is the most reasonable starting point. Any young that appear are likely to be free-swimming larvae requiring infusoria or commercially prepared fry foods. Data are genuinely sparse here, and overclaiming a specific breeding mode would be inaccurate.
In the aquarium
M. iheringi is a rewarding small catfish for an experienced community keeper who can accommodate its nocturnal habits and water requirements. An aquarium of 15–20 US gal or more, furnished with smooth-edged rocks, driftwood, and generous leaf-litter or other bottom cover, suits it well; caves or pipe sections give it secure retreats. Soft, warm water — 73–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.5 — reflects its Venezuelan stream origins. Moderate filtration that produces some current without creating a torrent is appropriate.
Because it is scaleless, M. iheringi is more permeable than scaled fish to medications, particularly copper-based treatments and organophosphates. Use half the standard dose as a starting point and observe the fish closely for distress; treatments that scale well-armoured catfishes tolerate with ease can be lethal at full strength here. The same caution applies to many salt treatments. Choose tankmates thoughtfully: fish too large to be swallowed are safe, but very small shrimp, nano fish fry, or tiny invertebrates are potential prey. Community fish of comparable size — small tetras, pencilfish, dwarf corydoras — are generally compatible. A small group of M. iheringi, rather than a lone individual, produces more natural behaviour and better odds of eventual spawning activity.
Conservation
Microglanis iheringi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated. Monitoring effort for small-bodied catfishes in northern South America remains limited, and robust range-wide population data are not available in the open literature.
The species appears in the ornamental fish trade in modest numbers, typically wild-caught from Venezuelan localities. As with many small stream catfishes its principal threats are likely to be habitat alteration — channelisation, deforestation-linked sedimentation, and agricultural runoff degrading the clean-stream conditions it depends on — rather than commercial collection pressure. Encouraging captive breeding within the hobby would reduce reliance on wild capture and improve knowledge of the species' reproductive biology, both worthwhile goals.
