The genus Gymnocorymbus comprises only a small number of species and is best known in the aquarium hobby through Gymnocorymbus ternetzi, the black widow or black skirt tetra, one of the most widely kept aquarium fishes in the world. G. thayeri is a close relative that does not develop the same bold dark pigmentation as a mature adult, leading to the common name 'false black tetra.' The specific epithet thayeri is a patronym, though the exact honoree — typically the American naturalist and collector Nathaniel Thayer or a member of his family who supported Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology — is not confirmed in the cache notes available here.

The species occupies slow-moving rivers and streams with dense aquatic vegetation and often heavily shaded margins. Feeding

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of prepared, frozen, and live foods. As with most small tetras, offering small amounts multiple times a day suits the fish's constant-grazing style better than a single large daily meal.

Mating

Gymnocorymbus thayeri is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the reproductive strategy typical of most small characins. In the wild, spawning likely occurs in schools in shallow, vegetated water where eggs are deposited among fine-leaved plants and allowed to drift or stick to substrate and plant surfaces.

Males display competitive and courtship behaviour toward females, particularly in the presence of rival males. The fish do not form pair bonds; a group will spawn communally, with males chasing and displaying to receptive females. Breeding
