Taxonomy & naming
Silurus asotus was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of Systema Naturae. It belongs to the family Siluridae, the sheatfishes, a predominantly Asian family that includes the giant wels catfish of Europe (Silurus glanis) and its East Asian relatives. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Silurus asotus as the valid name.
The genus Silurus is widely distributed across Europe and Asia. Silurus asotus is the most widespread of the East Asian members, ranging from the Amur basin in the north through river systems in China, Korea and Japan. Historical literature sometimes confused it with Silurus glanis or assigned Asian material to various earlier synonyms; current taxonomic consensus places the East Asian populations firmly under asotus. The epithet asotus derives from a Greek word meaning 'profligate' or 'prodigal', alluding to its voracious appetite — a fitting description of this apex freshwater predator.
Morphology
The Amur catfish has the elongate, laterally compressed body plan typical of the Siluridae: a broad, depressed head, a wide mouth, and a long low adipose keel that merges into the tail. The dorsal fin is very short (just a few rays), placed far forward above the pectoral fins, while the anal fin runs nearly the full length of the underside — another hallmark of the family. Three pairs of barbels extend from around the mouth: one long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs.
The body is scaleless (naked-skinned) with a smooth, mucus-covered surface. Ground colour is typically dark olive-grey to brownish-black on the back, fading to a paler, mottled cream or yellow-grey on the flanks and belly; the pattern provides camouflage among river-bottom debris and vegetation. Stiff, serrated pectoral spines are present and can lock in the erect position; these are capable of causing painful puncture wounds if handled carelessly. Maximum total length is 51 in (FishBase), with weights to 30–40 kg, though fish of 12–23.5 in are most commonly encountered in rivers and in the trade.
Habitat
Silurus asotus inhabits slow-moving or still freshwaters: large rivers, their oxbow lakes and flood-plain pools, rice-field irrigation canals, reservoirs and lowland lakes across the Amur River basin and adjacent drainages in China, Korea and Japan. It is strongly associated with dense aquatic vegetation, submerged wood, and muddy-bottomed habitats where it rests and ambushes prey during the day.
This is a temperate fish, not a tropical one. River temperatures through its range fluctuate considerably across the seasons — warm in summer, cold and sometimes near-freezing in winter. It tolerates a broad temperature range reflecting this continental climate; it is not adapted to the warm, stable conditions of a tropical community tank. Water is typically soft to moderately hard and circumneutral to slightly alkaline in many parts of its range, though it proves adaptable across a range of chemistry.
Feeding
Silurus asotus is an obligate piscivore and high-trophic-level predator (trophic level 4.4, FishBase). In the wild it feeds almost entirely on fish, supplemented by frogs, aquatic invertebrates, and any other animal prey of suitable size. It hunts primarily at night, using its long barbels and lateral-line sensitivity to locate prey in darkness or turbid water before engulfing it with a rapid lunge.
In aquaria and aquaculture ponds it takes large meaty foods: whole fish (live or dead), large prawns and shrimp, mussels, and, once conditioned, sinking meaty pellets formulated for large predatory catfish. It will attempt to swallow any tankmate that fits in its mouth — the only safe companions are fish that are demonstrably too large to be engulfed. Feeding frequency can be low for large adults; a large Amur catfish may need feeding only two or three times per week.
Mating
In the wild, spawning by Silurus asotus is triggered by the environmental conditions of early summer: rising temperatures, increasing day length and, critically, flooding events that allow fish to move into shallow, vegetated marginal areas and flooded rice paddies where spawning takes place. These migration and flood triggers are difficult to replicate indoors, and commercial aquaculture relies on hormone injection (carp pituitary extract or synthetic GnRH analogues) to induce spawning outside of these natural cues.
Courting behaviour involves the male closely following the female; the spawning act itself is rapid and takes place over aquatic vegetation or submerged plant material, which the adhesive eggs adhere to. The specificity of the environmental and hormonal cues means that spontaneous natural spawning in standard aquarium or pond conditions is not documented, and this species is not bred in the hobby.
Breeding
Breeding Silurus asotus in the aquarium is not achieved under normal circumstances. The spawning stimulus requires specific environmental simulation — temperature shifts, flooding analogues, and/or hormonal induction — that replicates the springtime flood-pulse of its native rivers. Commercial aquaculture operations breed it routinely using hormone injection, and the species grows to marketable size within a year; this farm production is what supplies fish for food markets and, to a lesser extent, the ornamental trade.
Parental care is minimal beyond the selection of a spawning site: the adhesive eggs are deposited on submerged vegetation and left to develop without guarding. Incubation is temperature-dependent and relatively brief under warm conditions. Home aquarists should regard this species as not breedable in standard aquarium settings; dedicated pond facilities with controlled seasonal simulation and access to hormone treatment are the practical minimum.
In the aquarium
The Amur catfish is not a practical aquarium fish for most keepers. It is frequently sold as a small juvenile — 2–6 in — and grows rapidly to an adult size of over a metre and 30 kg or more. Housing an adult requires a massive, purpose-built system or a public-aquarium exhibit; the species must be regarded as a pond or public-aquarium fish, not a home aquarium subject, and any purchase should be made only with a long-term plan for the full-grown animal.
For the rare keeper with appropriate facilities, the Amur catfish needs a temperate setup that mirrors the seasonal temperature variation of East Asian rivers — cooler in winter, warmer in summer; it does not want or tolerate the high, stable temperatures of a tropical system. Provide a spacious tank with large driftwood, overhangs or cave structures for daytime shelter, subdued lighting, and good filtration to handle the heavy waste load of a large predator. Feed large meaty foods two to three times per week; tankmates must be genuinely too large to be swallowed.
Two safety points apply unconditionally. First, the skin is completely scaleless and highly permeable: Silurus asotus is sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — always dose conservatively (half-dose is often advised, as for loaches, puffers and eels) and avoid copper entirely if possible. Second, the stiff, serrated pectoral spines lock erect when the fish is stressed and can puncture deeply; always move this fish in a container or wet bag rather than a net, and handle with appropriate caution.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Silurus asotus as Least Concern. It is a widespread, adaptable species with a large range across the river systems of East Asia, tolerant of modified habitats including irrigation canals and aquaculture ponds, and extensively farmed throughout its range.
Heavy commercial aquaculture production means that the species faces limited pressure from wild capture for the food market; most fish in trade are farm-raised. The wild population appears stable across its range, and no major range-wide threats are currently identified. As with other large predatory freshwater fish, local pressures — pollution, habitat modification in river floodplains, and the modification of seasonal flood pulses — may affect local populations, but these are not considered to threaten the species at the range-wide level.
