Taxonomy & naming
Misgurnus mohoity was described by the Polish-Russian naturalist Benedykt Dybowski in 1869 from material collected in the Amur basin, and it has remained in the genus Misgurnus ever since — there is no old-combination baggage to untangle here, unlike many of its Cobitoidea relatives. The species is sometimes referenced under the synonym Misgurnus bipartitus in older distribution literature, though the current treatment recognizes it as its own valid species within the genus.
It sits in the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, alongside the European weather loach Misgurnus fossilis and the widely traded dojo loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. The genus name Misgurnus derives from a Latinized form referencing the fish's slippery, eel-like body, while the species epithet mohoity honors its original collection locality naming convention from Dybowski's 19th-century fieldwork in the Russian Far East.
Morphology
Like every member of Cobitidae, Misgurnus mohoity carries the family's namesake feature: a small, sharp, erectile spine set in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out when threatened or handled. The body is elongated and eel-like, cylindrical toward the head and increasingly compressed toward the tail, covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked — a trait shared across the family and one that matters directly for how the fish should be medicated.
Maximum recorded length is 7 in total length, a modest size compared to many botiid loaches. The genus Misgurnus is also known for being a facultative air-breather, able to gulp atmospheric air and absorb oxygen through its gut when dissolved oxygen in the water runs low — an adaptation well suited to the shallow, sometimes stagnant or ice-bound margins of its temperate range.
Habitat
This species is native to the Amur River basin, occurring across the Russian Far East (the Amur drainage, with the notable exception of Khanka Lake), northeast China's Heilongjiang Province south to the upper Liao River, and Mongolia. It is a freshwater, demersal fish of temperate rivers, streams and connected wetlands, living on or near soft substrates.
What sets this habitat apart from the tropical rivers most aquarium loaches come from is its thermal extremity: research into the species' thermal-adaptation genes has found positive selection for genes involved in energy metabolism and cold tolerance, tied to an annual temperature swing of roughly 122 °F across its Heilongjiang range. Winters bring the water close to freezing, sometimes under ice, while summers warm considerably — a seasonal cycle this species is genuinely built for, not merely tolerant of.
Feeding
Misgurnus mohoity is a benthic omnivore that forages by sifting through sand and fine gravel, taking worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates along with some detritus, in the same sand-sifting manner typical of the genus. A soft substrate is essential for this natural foraging behavior to express itself.
In the aquarium it is an easy, unfussy feeder, accepting sinking pellets, wafers, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworm and blackworm. Because it forages along the bottom and often feeds most actively after dark, sinking foods offered in the evening suit it better than food that lingers at the surface.
Mating
Detailed courtship and spawning behavior specific to Misgurnus mohoity is not well documented in the available literature, but the genus overall follows a straightforward egg-scattering pattern with no pair bond and no nest-building. As a temperate species tied to a strongly seasonal cycle, spawning activity in the wild is expected to follow the spring warm-up, when rising temperatures and lengthening days cue reproductive readiness after the cold season.
There is no reliable external sexual dimorphism reported for this species in the cached sources; as with many Misgurnus, distinguishing the sexes outside of breeding condition is difficult.
Breeding
As a temperate member of Cobitidae, Misgurnus mohoity fits the pattern seen in its close relatives the European weather loach (Misgurnus fossilis) and the dojo (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus): it scatters adhesive eggs among plants, typically in spring, with no parental care afterward. Several temperate spined loaches in this genus and in Cobitis and Sabanejewia have been successfully pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers working in cold-climate conditions, unlike the tropical Cobitidae (Acantopsis, Lepidocephalichthys), which are essentially never bred at home.
That said, specific breeding accounts for this particular species are sparse in the available record. The honest picture is that Misgurnus mohoity belongs to the more breedable end of the loach spectrum by virtue of its temperate biology and its genus's track record, but documented home spawnings of this species specifically are uncommon rather than routine.
In the aquarium
The single most important care point for this species is temperature: it is a coldwater fish, not a tropical one, and the cached care sources are explicit that it cannot thrive at tropical temperatures — lifespan drops sharply if it is kept warm, while a properly cool setup can let it live well over a decade. An unheated tank or an outdoor pond in a temperate climate suits it far better than a standard heated community aquarium, and it should not be mixed with tropical tankmates that need warmth it cannot tolerate long-term.
Give it a soft sand or fine gravel bed so it can express natural sifting and burrowing behavior, some water movement, and stable, clean water — it is noted as sensitive to poor water quality. Like other Cobitidae it is effectively scaleless, so medications should be dosed cautiously and copper-based treatments avoided, as this group absorbs treatments readily and is often among the first fish in a tank to show signs of trouble. At a maximum size of about 7 in, it does not need a particularly large tank, but its coldwater requirement makes it a specialist rather than a general community fish.
Conservation
Misgurnus mohoity is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, evaluated in 2020. It remains distributed across a substantial range spanning the Russian Amur basin, northeast China and Mongolia, and the assessment does not flag it as facing a significant population decline.
As with many widespread temperate freshwater fish, localized pressures such as habitat alteration and water quality changes within parts of the Amur drainage are plausible concerns even for a Least Concern species, though the cached sources do not document a specific trade-driven threat to this fish. It is not a heavily traded aquarium staple in the way the dojo loach is, and there is no indication in the available sources of wild collection pressure driving conservation concern.
