Taxonomy & naming
Tandanus tandanus was first described by the explorer and surveyor-general Thomas Livingstone Mitchell in 1838, based on specimens from inland New South Wales. The original description placed it under the name Plotosus tandanus before later workers erected the genus Tandanus to contain the species. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Tandanus tandanus as the valid binomial, with the combination (Mitchell, 1838) indicating that the genus has changed since the original description.
The family Plotosidae, the eel-tail catfishes, is the only catfish family native to Australia and is represented here by a single species. Plotosids are most diverse in marine coastal and estuarine environments across the Indo-Pacific, and Tandanus tandanus is one of the few members of the family to live its entire life in freshwater. The family name reflects the elongated, eel-like posterior — the dorsal fin, tail, and anal fin are continuous in a single tapering fin, unlike the separated fins of most other catfishes.
Morphology
Adult Tandanus tandanus reach around 23.5 in standard length, making them a genuinely large catfish by aquarium standards. The body is robust and rounded toward the head, tapering into the characteristic plotosid eel-tail. Ground colour is olive-brown to grey-brown on the back and flanks, fading to a cream or pale underside; juveniles may show pale mottling that fades with age. Four pairs of barbels ring the mouth.
The skin is entirely scaleless — naked, as in all catfishes, without a bony plate armour of any kind — and this bare skin is directly relevant to medication sensitivity. The dorsal and pectoral fins each bear a stout, locking spine; the pectoral spines are notably strong and carry venom glands at their base, capable of delivering a genuinely painful sting. The posterior dorsal, caudal and anal fins are continuous, giving the rear half of the fish a smooth, eel-like profile that distinguishes the Plotosidae from all other freshwater catfishes.
Habitat
Tandanus tandanus is native to the Murray–Darling river system and rivers of coastal Queensland and New South Wales in eastern Australia. It inhabits a range of freshwater environments including slow-moving rivers, lakes, impoundments, and billabongs — characteristically in warmer, lower-reaches habitats with muddy or sandy substrates, submerged wood and aquatic vegetation offering daytime cover.
Australian inland river water in the Murray–Darling basin tends toward neutral to slightly alkaline, often moderately hard, with temperatures that swing considerably between winter and summer. This is not a soft tropical blackwater fish: its home waters are temperate to subtropical, and it tolerates a broad temperature range from the cool of winter to the warmth of Australian summer. Water quality matters considerably — the species is sensitive to the declining water quality and reduced flows that have affected much of its native range.
Feeding
Tandanus tandanus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging after dark over the bottom for aquatic invertebrates — freshwater mussels (particularly Velesunio and related bivalves), crayfish, worms, insect larvae, and small fish. It uses its barbels to locate prey by touch and chemoreception in low light, and the strong pharyngeal teeth can crush mollusc shells. Detritus and plant material supplement the diet where invertebrate prey is scarce.
In the aquarium it will accept sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, shrimp, and mussel flesh, and will take an interest in live or freshly killed invertebrates. Because it feeds primarily after dark it should be offered food after lights-out, otherwise it may be out-competed by daytime feeders and slowly starve. Juveniles are active enough at lower light levels to feed during the aquarist's evening hours.
Mating
Tandanus tandanus is a cavity and nest spawner, not an open-water egg-scatterer. In the wild, breeding coincides with the warmer months (Australian spring and early summer, approximately October–December), triggered by rising water temperatures and associated environmental cues. Males prepare a nest site, typically a shallow depression in gravel or sand in sheltered, weedy or woody-debris-rich shallows.
Courting pairs engage in tactile behaviour and circling before spawning, and the male takes on a guarding role once eggs are deposited. Sexing outside the breeding season is not straightforward: ripe females are noticeably fuller-bodied, but outside of breeding condition the sexes are similar. Inducing the full spawning sequence in aquaria is rarely reported, and most accounts of captive breeding involve large outdoor ponds in the species' native range.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Tandanus tandanus in the aquarium hobby is uncommon. The species has been successfully spawned in large outdoor ponds and research hatcheries in Australia, primarily for aquaculture and restocking programmes, where it can be conditioned and induced with hormones (GnRHa or similar). In these settings the male guards the nest and eggs until hatching.
For most aquarists, breeding in a standard home aquarium is not a realistic expectation. The fish grow large, require substantial space, and the full hormonal and environmental cues needed to trigger spawning are difficult to replicate indoors. Aquarium specimens are therefore typically either wild-caught or hatchery-raised fingerlings sourced through specialist Australian native fish dealers. Note that regulations on collection and possession vary by state in Australia — check local wildlife legislation before acquiring wild specimens.
In the aquarium
Tandanus tandanus reaches 23.5 in as an adult, and a suitable aquarium must reflect this: a minimum of 80–105 US gal for a juvenile, substantially more for a full-grown fish. This is the single most important message for prospective keepers — many individuals are purchased as appealing juveniles and rehomed or lost when the tank proves inadequate. The species is not endangered by any formal assessment, but inappropriate release of non-native animals into Australian waterways is illegal and ecologically harmful; unwanted fish must not be released.
The skin is entirely scaleless, making this species more sensitive than plated or scaled fish to copper and many common medications. Use half-doses of copper-based treatments and exercise caution with any medication not specifically cleared for use with scaleless fish. The pectoral spines are venomous and lock erect when the fish is stressed — never net a dewfish; always move it in a container or thick wet cloth to protect both fish and keeper. It is nocturnal and must be provided with caves, submerged pipe, or woody structure to rest in by day. Water temperature can range from about 64–82 °F, allowing keeping in unheated tanks in temperate parts of Australia during summer, with heating required in winter. Native Australian fish make suitable tankmates provided they are too large to be eaten; small fish and ornamental shrimp will be taken.
Conservation
Tandanus tandanus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. At the national level the species is listed as a protected native fish under various Australian state and Commonwealth legislation, and its populations are considered to have declined significantly from historical levels across much of the Murray–Darling Basin.
The primary threats are habitat degradation — altered water flows through dam and weir construction, reduced flood events needed for spawning cues, siltation of gravel spawning beds, and water quality decline — as well as predation and competition from introduced species including European carp and redfin perch. Fishing is regulated across its range. Restocking programmes using hatchery-bred fish have been active across New South Wales and Victoria, and the species is a priority species for native fish recovery efforts in the Murray–Darling Basin Plan.
