Taxonomy & naming
Mogurnda clivicola was formally described by Helen K. Larson and Douglas F. Hoese in 1996. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the governing authority for valid fish names — places it in the genus Mogurnda and the family Eleotridae, the sleeper gobies and gudgeons. Eleotrids are one of the major lineages of the Gobioidei, but they differ from the true gobies in a single anatomical character of diagnostic importance: their pelvic fins are free and separate, whereas the pelvic fins of the true gobies (Gobiidae, Gobionellidae, Oxudercidae) are fused together to form a cup-like adhesive sucker disc on the ventral surface. That character is the easiest way for an aquarist to tell a gudgeon from a goby at a glance — the flat underside of a gudgeon shows two distinct fins, a true goby shows a single fused disc.
The Mogurnda gudgeons are an Australian and New Guinean group closely related to the carp gudgeons (Hypseleotris) and the large sleeper Oxyeleotris. The epithet clivicola comes from the Latin clivus (a slope or hill) and cola (an inhabitant) — "hill-dweller" or "slope-inhabitant" — a reference to the steep-sided gorge and range country that this species calls home in the Flinders Ranges system.
Morphology
Mogurnda clivicola is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed gudgeon with a blunt head and a slightly protruding lower jaw. It grows to 5–6 in in standard or total length — making it larger than many of its Mogurnda relatives and among the more sizeable of the Australian freshwater eleotrids available to aquarists.
The body colour is brownish to cream or pale tan, overlaid with approximately 8–9 faint blue-grey vertical bars along the flank. A series of reddish-brown spots or blotches break the background colouration and create a subtly mottled pattern that provides effective camouflage among the pale limestone and quartzite boulders of its gorge-stream habitat. The pelvic fins are separate — the sleeper / gudgeon character — and the fins overall tend toward muted tones consistent with a cryptic, bottom-associated lifestyle.
Habitat
This species occupies two geographically and ecologically distinct habitats. In the Gammon Ranges National Park of the Flinders Ranges (South Australia), it lives in spring-fed rocky pools within steep-sided gorges — isolated, perennial water bodies fed by groundwater, with rock-pool and run substrates subject to dramatic multi-metre flood-level changes during rare rainfall events. These are clearwater streams over stone and coarse gravel in an otherwise arid landscape. Wild water parameters recorded here span 53–84 °F and pH 7.1–8.8, reflecting the extreme seasonal variability of the region's temperature and the alkalinity of the underlying limestone and quartzite geology.
The Bulloo Basin population in south-western Queensland occupies a contrasting environment: larger, muddier-bottomed rivers with less extreme physico-chemical stability. The two populations are separated by vast stretches of unsuitable arid country, giving the species a highly fragmented range with no realistic pathway for natural recolonisation between them.
Feeding
Mogurnda clivicola is a micro-predator. In the wild it takes insect larvae and small crustaceans from the rocky bed and margins of its spring-fed pools — hunting by sight in the clear, still or slow-moving water of gorge pools and rocky runs. Like most gudgeons and sleeper gobies, it is not an algae grazer and has no interest in plant material.
In the aquarium, this species requires small live and frozen invertebrate foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops and similar small meaty items. It is unlikely to take dried flake readily, and fish maintained on flake alone typically lose condition. Conditioning specimens for breeding calls for regular live or high-quality frozen food. Being honest with keepers about this dietary requirement is important — the Flinders Ranges gudgeon is not a community fish that will thrive on the same pellets as its tankmates.
Mating
Mogurnda clivicola is a resident freshwater cave or substrate spawner — a breeding strategy shared across the genus Mogurnda and sharply distinct from the amphidromous pattern of the stream-climbing Sicydiinae gobies. There is no marine phase in the life cycle of this fish. Spawning in the wild is triggered by temperatures at or above approximately 68 °F, meaning that in the cold spring-fed gorge pools of the Gammon Ranges it is a seasonal event tied to the warming months.
As with other resident cave-spawning gobies and gudgeons, males take up and defend a territory centred on a spawning cavity — a rock crevice, a shallow ledge undercut by water, or any firm, shaded shelter. Courtship involves colour intensification and fin display by the male, who leads a ripe female to the chosen site. Because the species is a resident freshwater breeder rather than an amphidromous one, the full cycle occurs in fresh water and the species can in principle be bred in captivity — though the rarity and conservation status of this fish means that very few aquarists will encounter it.
Breeding
Mogurnda clivicola is oviparous: the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs — typically 200–800 per spawn — on the roof or walls of the chosen cave or rock crevice, where they adhere firmly to the substrate. Once spawning is complete, the male takes sole charge of the eggs, guarding the site against disturbance and fanning the eggs with his fins to maintain oxygenation and remove waste. Incubation at warm temperatures runs to approximately one week.
Growth data from wild monitoring programmes in South Australia document juveniles at 0.5–1 in at roughly six weeks post-spawn, reaching 3–3.5 in by 27 months. This relatively slow growth to the species' mature size of 5–6 in suggests a fish that needs stable, high-quality conditions throughout its first few years. The fact that both populations are wild-managed means that any captive-breeding programme for this species would be a conservation effort rather than routine aquarium practice.
In the aquarium
Because of its Vulnerable (federal) and Critically Endangered (South Australian state) conservation status, Mogurnda clivicola is rarely kept outside specialist programs or licensed facilities in South Australia. The fish is not freely traded and any acquisition should be via a licensed supplier with appropriate documentation. That said, its biology informs what a proper captive setup would require.
A tank appropriate for a species that reaches 5–6 in should be spacious — at least 39.5 in in length — with a rocky, boulder-strewn aquascape that replicates the gorge-pool environment: stable filtration, clear water with moderate hardness and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7.0–8.0), and temperature kept broadly between 15 and 77 °F. Given the wild range dips below 59 °F in winter, the species is unusually cold-tolerant for a gudgeon and does not need tropical heating in temperate climates. Males will be territorial, so caves and line-of-sight breaks are important. Diet must be live or frozen small invertebrates — dried foods are not adequate. The tank must be covered, as gudgeons are capable jumpers. Salt is not needed and should not be added.
Conservation
Mogurnda clivicola is listed as Vulnerable under Australia's federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, and as Critically Endangered under South Australian state legislation — the highest state threat category. The IUCN Red List currently assesses it as Endangered. The species' entire known range comprises two isolated populations: a small number of spring-fed pools and gorge reaches in the Gammon Ranges National Park (Flinders Ranges, SA), and a separate population in the Bulloo Basin of south-western Queensland. The arid landscape separating these sites means there is no realistic natural connectivity between them.
The threats are multiple and act simultaneously. The spring-fed gorge pools of the Gammon Ranges are vulnerable to drought — groundwater depletion, reduced spring flow — as well as wildfire runoff, which can cause acute mortality in isolated pools with no escape route. Introduced species, particularly large-bodied exotic fish and invertebrates, are a persistent threat to the South Australian population. Monitoring work published in the Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia has tracked growth rates and population dynamics to underpin recovery planning.
Active conservation management is in place: the Gammon Ranges populations are monitored by the South Australian government, and there are captive insurance populations held by licensed facilities. Because the entire wild population is thought to occupy only a handful of discrete water bodies, any single catastrophic event — a severe drought, a flash flood carrying introduced fish, or a wildfire — could extirpate the South Australian genetic lineage entirely. This species sits at the far end of the conservation urgency spectrum among Australia's freshwater gudgeons.
