Xyliphius lepturus is a small, secretive banjo catfish from the Andean piedmont streams feeding the upper Amazon and Orinoco basins, first described by the Ecuadorian naturalist Gustavo Orcés Villagómez in 1962. Its flattened, guitar-shaped head, tapering ratlike tail and near-vestigial eyes mark it as a burrower built for life under sand in fast, silty currents rather than for open water. It is seldom seen in the aquarium trade, its biology — including how it breeds — remains largely undocumented, and it stands as one of the more obscure members of the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes of South America.

Taxonomy & naming

Xyliphius lepturus was described by Gustavo Orcés V. in 1962 from the headwaters of the Río Bobonaza in the Alto Napo region of Concepción, Ecuador, with the holotype held at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History (USNM 301688). It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, a South American group named for the flattened, disc-shaped head and long, slender tail that together resemble the outline of a banjo. The genus Xyliphius is a small assemblage of poorly known, burrowing banjo cats restricted to Andean piedmont drainages.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Xyliphius lepturus as the valid combination, and it has not been shuffled through other genera the way many catfishes have. Aspredinid taxonomy overall has seen substantial revision in recent decades, but Xyliphius has remained comparatively stable, reflecting how little material of these rarely collected fish exists for restudy.

Morphology

Adults reach only about 5 in SL, a genuinely small member of the catfish order — but that modest adult size should not be mistaken for a fish that never needs consideration in stocking plans; it is still a specialised, sensitive species rather than a token nano catfish. The body is strongly depressed and tapers from a broad, flattened, banjo-shaped head into a long, slender, ratlike tail, the classic Aspredinidae silhouette.

Like other banjo catfish, and like catfishes generally, Xyliphius lepturus has no scales — the naked skin is instead often roughened with small tubercles, which matters directly for medicating the fish (see "In the aquarium"). The eyes are extremely reduced, little more than tiny black dots, consistent with a nocturnal, sand-burrowing lifestyle where vision counts for less than touch and chemoreception via the barbels. PlanetCatfish records two distinct colour forms — unicolored individuals thought to be males and bicoloured individuals thought to be females — though this apparent dimorphism has not been formally documented in the literature.

Habitat

The species is native to the upper Amazon and Orinoco river basins, with records spanning Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela; the type locality lies in the Río Bobonaza headwaters of the Alto Napo region in Ecuador. This is Andean piedmont country — rivers and streams draining down off the eastern slope of the Andes, generally faster-flowing and more sediment-laden than the black- and clearwater habitats typical of lowland Amazonia.

Within these rivers, Xyliphius lepturus lives buried in sand on the bottom, favouring stretches with moderate-to-strong current that keeps the substrate clean and oxygenated. ScotCat records aquarium-appropriate parameters of 72–77 °F and pH 6.5–7.6, consistent with a moderately soft, close-to-neutral piedmont river rather than the strongly acidic blackwater of the classic Amazon basin or the hard, alkaline water of a rift lake.

Feeding

As a nocturnal, sand-dwelling benthic feeder, Xyliphius lepturus almost certainly forages for small invertebrates worked out of the substrate after dark, in keeping with the general pattern for burrowing banjo catfishes. ScotCat notes that in the aquarium it accepts bloodworm and tubifex readily but refuses dry food outright, so live and frozen foods are essential rather than optional for this species.

Because it spends the day buried and only becomes active at night, food should be offered after the lights go out; a fish that only ever sees prepared flake or pellet in a lit tank may simply starve. Its very small mouth and reduced activity level also mean it should not be expected to compete for food against faster, more visible tankmates — and keepers should be aware it may in turn take small fish fry itself.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour in Xyliphius lepturus have not been documented, and ScotCat explicitly notes that sexual differentiation and breeding remain unrecorded for this species in the aquarium. What is known comes from the wider Aspredinidae: in at least one well-studied relative, Aspredo aspredo, the female carries the fertilised eggs attached to her belly skin via small fleshy stalks called cotylephores, brooding them externally until they hatch — a strategy unlike almost anything else among catfishes.

Whether Xyliphius lepturus follows this same external egg-carrying pattern is not established; the genus is rarely collected and has not been the subject of reproductive study. Any account of its mating behaviour beyond this would be speculation rather than documented fact.

Breeding

There is no record of Xyliphius lepturus being bred in captivity, and the species is described as seldom seen in the hobby at all, which has left its reproductive biology essentially a blank page. This honestly puts it alongside the many obscure, wild-collected catfishes that simply are not home-breedable projects at present — not because keepers have failed, but because the basic natural history needed to attempt it has not been worked out.

If its biology does mirror the belly-carrying strategy documented in other banjo catfish such as Aspredo aspredo, a female would need to carry a small clutch of eggs attached to her skin through to hatching, with no separate nest, cave or bubble-nest involved — but this remains an inference from relatives rather than a confirmed account for this species. Prospective keepers should treat it as a fish to observe and appreciate, not one to plan a breeding project around.

In the aquarium

Xyliphius lepturus stays small — to about 5 in — but it is a specialist, not a casual community fish, and it is rarely available in the trade. ScotCat describes it as extremely peaceful and rather lethargic, spending most of its time buried in sand and only emerging to forage after dark; a tank needs a deep, soft sand substrate for burrowing plus moderate-to-strong current to mimic its piedmont-river home, at 72–77 °F and pH 6.5–7.6.

Two care points carry over from its biology as a catfish. It has no scales, so as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned fish it is more sensitive than scaled species to copper and many medications — dose conservatively. And while its spines are less imposing than those of larger catfish, it should still be moved in a container rather than netted to avoid tangling or injury. Feed only bloodworm and tubifex after lights-out; it will refuse dry foods, and small fish fry sharing the tank are at some risk from it.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Xyliphius lepturus as Least Concern. It is known from a reasonably broad span of Andean piedmont drainages across Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela rather than a single isolated locality, which supports the current low-concern rating.

That range nonetheless sits squarely in a region under real and growing pressure: oil and gas extraction, urban wastewater and agricultural runoff are all recorded threats to the Andean piedmont habitats the species depends on. Because it is a localized, sand-burrowing specialist tied to specific river conditions, water-quality degradation in these headwater systems is the long-term concern to watch even while the species-wide status remains Least Concern.
