Xyliphius melanopterus was described by the Ecuadorian ichthyologist Gustavo Orcés V. in 1962. It belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, within the genus Xyliphius, a small group of flat-headed, sand-dwelling South American species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Xyliphius melanopterus as the valid combination, and it has not been shuffled through other historic catfish genera the way many older Siluriformes names have.
The genus name Xyliphius derives from Greek roots referencing a wood- or stick-like build, an allusion to the elongated, tapering body shape shared across the genus. The epithet melanopterus is Greek for "black-finned" (melas, black + pteron, fin), describing the dark fin markings that help distinguish this species from its close relatives within Xyliphius.
Morphology
Like other banjo catfishes, Xyliphius melanopterus has the family's unmistakable silhouette: a broad, dorsoventrally flattened head and forebody that narrows abruptly into a long, slender, almost eel-like tail, giving the whole animal a banjo-shaped outline when viewed from above. The skin is naked and scaleless, and the body is typically mottled in sandy browns and greys that blend into a riverbed substrate.
Maximum recorded size is modest, around 6 in SL (FishBase), making it one of the smaller catfishes covered in this atlas. As a benthic, presumably nocturnal fish it would need a soft, fine substrate to rest on or partially bury into, subdued lighting and cover, plus stable, warm, well-oxygenated river-type water.
